United Wins! (Um, Only a Scrimmage)

United defeats Florida International University, 5-3, in Sunrise, Fla. Rookie forward Guy-Roland Kpene scored twice, Jeff Carroll, Brian Carroll and Jamil Walker had one apiece. Jay Nolly and Shawn Crowe split the goalkeeping job (Perkins recovering from strained quadriceps). The teams played three 30-minute periods. Kasali Yinka Casal, who has returned from England with a work visa, got in the game in the second period. Trialists Jamil Fearrington and Welton Silva played in the final session.

I was not there, so that's all I've got for ya. Next game: Friday night against Motagua of Honduras at Tropical Park.

Did Boz bet anyone on that 6-0 DC/FIU prediction?

From United's perspective 5-3 isn't too hot, regardless of who played.

Goff is prolific today! Watch out Ms. Gofff - Steve is coming home!

thx

I wouldn't be too concerned about this result. From looking at the goal scorers, this was probably a reserve match with a few starters sprinkled in for good measure.

ONLY a scrimmage????
Ha!!! We will dominate all opponents.
Only a scrimmage - give me a break!!!

This is proof that we are a failure as a team. Forget even competing, we should trade Gomez for draft picks while we have the chance. While we're at it, cut Boswell and fire Soehn. Maybe we should think about renting our time at RFK to a travelling circus just to recoup costs on what is assuredly a lost season.

I don't even know why I'm wasting my time typing this comment. United is the worst team in the history of professional sports. I'm going to go sell my pants to charity and send the money to Kevin Payne so he can afford to live after the team is disbanded.

What kind of pants are they?

Posted by: Rocko | March 7, 2007 9:27 AM

The only kind I wear. Leather and assless.

Logan Circle's gloom and doom message after the 5-3 win reveals his true identity: Franz Beckenbauer.

Ach, Nein!

Heather Mitts and her USA teammates defeat China 2-1 in the Algarve Cup opener (Lilly 20', Lloyd 40; Duan 23').

OK, so Heather didn't play, but you report your way and I'll report mine.

This is the biggest tournament before the WC. Why no Post reporter in Portugal? Will you have one in China?

Posted by: I-270 Exit 1 | March 7, 2007 1:34 PM

A reporter in Portugal for an exhibition women's tournament? You're kidding, right?

I do have tentative approval to cover the Women's World Cup in China, but still many financial and logistical details to work out.

Posted by: Goff | March 7, 2007 2:02 PM

Well then, we'll have to bombard your editors with e-mails justifying your China trip with (1) the new look USWNT, (2) gender equity in sports, (3) attracting women readers to the sports pages, (4) emerging foreign markets, (5) globalization, and (6) six party talks on nuclear disarmament.

Goffistas? Are you with me?

Man, I hope they don't send Woodward instead.

Posted by: I-270 Exit 1 | March 7, 2007 3:39 PM

Hey, I live in Portugal and couldn't even find PORTUGUESE coverage of the match. I actually found out the score via Yahoo (I didn't notice what the source of the report was).

I missed today's game, but I'm driving down for Monday's match against Sweden. I'll post the results as soon as I can. Ditto for the final if we make it.

There is interest in the Women's World Cup and that's why we will likely send a reporter. There is virtually no interest in the Algarve Cup, which is why there are few reporters (or fans) there. It's a tuneup for the World Cup, nothing more.

Any chance we could get a Troy Perkins update this week? Not much on the team website about it...or are they just letting Chivas think they will have a go at Nolly?

Posted by: NW FC | March 7, 2007 5:09 PM

Nothing new to report. Perkins still rehabbing. Team hopeful he'll be ready for Chivas next week. We should know more when the club resumes workouts at RFK Sunday/Monday.

Who cares about the score - what's most important in this preseason is how the players are working together and what they show individually. How is Welton Silva doing? Without actually seeing the game, only a more substantive game description will tell us. Does Goff need a bigger travel budget?!

Mmmm...Heather Mitts.
