What's New?

[UPDATES at bottom]
Very quiet at the moment......

DCU/MLS still working out the Fred situation, but the club expects him to be available for the Chivas match next Tuesday.

On the college front, Howard University is still without a head coach after Keith Tucker's dismissal this winter. Ex-Bison star Shaka Hislop's name keeps coming up as a top candidate, with the latest rumor being that the school might have an interim/assistant coach run things until Shaka decides to retire (perhaps after this season?). I've also heard that Mike Williams, a teammate of Shaka's on the 1988 Final Four team and now a title-winning coach at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, appears to be a candidate.

Also locally, Georgetown has decided to not participate in the D.C. College Cup this fall and has been replaced by George Mason -- an upgrade in quality considering the Hoyas' recent struggles and the Patriots' return to the NCAA tournament last year. Still, it's no longer a true city-school event with Fairfax-based GMU joining American, Howard and George Washington. This year's tournament, Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 at AU, will have Mason-Howard and AU-GW facing each other in the first round and AU-Mason and HU-GW on the second day.

[UPDATE] Just spoke with former Bison Mike Williams. He didn't want to discuss the Howard situation in depth, but did say: "While I would love to be back at my alma mater, we [former players, alumni, etc.] all agree that the best person for the job is Shaka."

[UPDATE] Another name under consideration: Former U.S. national team defender Jimmy Banks, now coaching in Milwaukee.

[UPDATE] Howard spokesman Ed Hill tells me that the interview process is underway and they hope to wrap up the search soon.

[UPDATE] I have heard that Hislop did, in fact, interview for the job. Not sure if he came to D.C. or it was done over the phone. One source told me that Hislop was here in Washington for the interview, but not sure when it occurred.

Does Hislop have a chance of starting with FC Dallas this year? I feel like that World Cup performance drained him of his very last bits of energy.

Take the Howard job, Shaka!

Logan Circle -- agreed! To play so brilliantly against stiff odds in the WC, especially when he's getting into his twilight years on the field, seems to indicate a natural stopping point. Go out on a high and burnish my resume in DC is what I would do...

Posted by: iammrben | March 27, 2007 1:32 PM

Shaka will start...because Dario Sala sucker-punched someone at the end of their season and has a six-game suspension to serve.

Posted by: RK | March 27, 2007 2:09 PM

Georgetown not playing in yet another local tournament. Suprise, suprise.

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | March 27, 2007 2:31 PM

Something completely off topic:

Goff, what do you think of young Gabriel Ferrari over in Italy? I hear he's clicking well with the U-20's-- is he the next Donovan, or at least a forward to look forward to? And why do I keep reading opinions that the US has no depth with young strikers when Jozy Altidore, Preston Zimmerman et al have so much potential?

Posted by: Dan | March 27, 2007 2:46 PM

wiggum: exactly! someone should tell mark plotkin, 'cause that's all he talks about...

Posted by: fever | March 27, 2007 2:48 PM

That tie against Sweden would have to go down as the most impressive WC goal keeping performance I've ever seen. I can't imagine that anyone else would have the recruiting potential that Hislop would have for the Bisons, as one who's made his living for years in the EPL (and Division 1 teams advancing to the EPL).

It's a conspiracy to tout GMU as often as possible as the team of Fro Adu.

I just updated the item with a comment from Mike Williams...

Posted by: Goff | March 27, 2007 3:29 PM

Any word on what the announcements by Garber on Monday will be? Something important or something boring?

Posted by: victory | March 27, 2007 3:30 PM

No big announcements. Just an update on things. They'll also go into detail about a few items Wynalda mentioned during halftime the other day: cutting the grass the same way in each stadium, producing standard music (a la FIFA) for all games, etc. -- essentially, changes in the presentation of matches.

thanks for providing a possible scoop for WJ's sports editor. :) Here's to hoping that Williams gets an offer.

Posted by: max | March 27, 2007 3:45 PM

Thanks. Hopefully they mandate that all teams PA systems only announce goals, cards and substitutions and are otherwise silent during the game. KC and Columbus have horrible atmosphere that is made a lot worse by the PA.

I know a member of the committee and they are focusing on Shaka. But there are other candidates in play. That's all he would tell me. I'm frustrated by HU athletics in general why does it take so long to find a coach. We're losing valuable training/recruiting time. Their combined football and soccer coach search process is worse than Sunil Gulati (sp) and his US coach search.

why have things been so quiet lately? you'd think with the season opener getting closer things would be picking up around here.

is it cause of the international window, or is something really big about to happen, like the calm before the storm?

it can't be something boring like our team being a couple thousand miles away in another country?

Posted by: pat | March 27, 2007 4:14 PM

FC Dallas would be glad to part with Hislop, even with Sala's suspension. The guy has an huge gaa and three saves in five games during the pre-season. If the Hoops could get Hislop and his ridiculous salary off the books, they would have no problem starting Burse. As it is now, Burse (23 with little gk experience) is close to replacing Shaka on opening day. That's how pitiful Hislop's performance has been.

maybe HU should check out steve mclaren, he's soon to be seeking a new job

apropos of nothing... I attended what I think was the semifinal match between IU and Howard in 88 in Bloomington. Howard was valiant, but IU's superior conditioning and brutal/artless approach soon wore them down. But, what I remember most was an awesome little scene next to me in the stands. Some dumb guy was moaning about all the "Africans" and "immigrants" playing for Howard (remember, this is southern Indiana). He was going on and on about how the NCAA should only allow "Americans" to play. Finally, a black guy turned around and said, "So only the Indians?" It was well played.

How many college coaches in America played in the World Cup?

I reckon not many.

Posted by: BigKahuna | March 27, 2007 5:55 PM

I would gladly chip in some money to pay for Shaka's salary at Howard if he retired from FC Dallas right now. He is a terrible drain on the salary cap and is by far the worst keeper in all of MLS. Please Shaka, do us a favor and retire with grace and your reputation intact.

Carin Gabarra: 1991 World Cup winner and head coach US Naval Academy women's team.

Maybe some of the guys on the 1990 team are college coaches too, but none spring to mind.

Isn't Caliguari coaching college soccer now? Cal State Fullerton perhaps?

Posted by: Steigs | March 27, 2007 7:36 PM

coach tucker was a good man. He did alot for the DC community. He started an innercity league for kids. He also was the ncaa coach of the year.

i would go for mike williams. local and smart.

"producing standard music (a la FIFA) for all games, etc. -- essentially, changes in the presentation of matches."

Good gawd - thanks be to allah that I can't the PA since I'm in the barra. I wanted to slice my throat hearing the same crap in Germany, game after game... guess I needed a few more beers.

Saw AU this week-end, they are horrible. Saw GT last year, they are not much better.
Haven't seen Howard - no comment
GMU isn't too good, love their freshmen goalie. GMU and a thinned down Andrulis wins the tourney...bet on it.

Any news on the scrimmage (mentioned in Mexican press) that was supposed to take place today between DC United and UAG's reserve team? (UAG being another Guadalajara-based team in the Mexican League)

Posted by: garbaggio | March 27, 2007 11:29 PM

This just in -

The U-20 game preceding the US v GUA match on Weds in Frisco, TX was to be played behind closed doors.

"How many college coaches in America played in the World Cup?"

BigKahuna: The very same Jimmy Banks who Steve links to the Howard job played in Italy '90. He was a pretty fair defender who played in the 1-0 lost to the hosts. He coaches at a Div III school in Wisconsin. He doesn't quite have Shaka's resume, but he's been quietly doing what he does in his hometown for nearly two decades.

I think there are a few WC vets who are college assistants, like Mike Sorber and Bruce Murray. Sorber is also helping Bob Bradley with the US team, right?

Posted by: Benjamin | March 28, 2007 7:25 AM

A previous poster mentioned Carin Gabarra, a 1991 WWC champ, coaching Navy. Maryland's Shannon Higgins Cirovski should also be mentioned. I am certain that at least a couple other members of that squad are coaching in the college ranks, including April Heinrichs (both before and after her USWNT coaching stint) and Tracey Leone (who coached at Clemson for several years). (FWIW, The entire 1991 USWNT roster can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_Football_Women%27s_World_Cup_%28squads%29.)
