For Those of You in NYC.....

The Tribeca Film Festival presents.....

"The Power of the Game," directed by the accomplished Michael Apted.

For a summary, theaters and times, as well as Apted's thoughts on soccer, click here.

I've been told the film will be distributed nationally at some point.

Also playing: "Sons of Sakhnin United"

"Sakhnin" looks cool.

Anybody know how different "Power of the Game" is from "Real Madrid: The Movie" (as far as the whole "Oh, isn't soccer wonderful" feeling is concerned)?

From the director:
"If it's more than a game, then the film is more than what happens on the field. For all the great matches, great teams, great players that I've seen, nothing has stayed in my mind more vividly than driving down a dirt road, while making a movie in Rwanda in 1988, and watching children kicking a ball on a makeshift pitch. In a country which had no infrastructure, no communications, living with the traumas of famine, war and AIDS, these children, who'd never heard of America or Europe, who'd never seen a movie or touched a book, were chanting 'Maradona, Maradona'. That's the movie -- the way football penetrates the planet and engages the minds of more people than any single political or religious idea."

There's also a film showing called the Road to St. Diego about a young Argentine backwoodsman learns that soccer star Diego Maradona is ailing in a Buenos Aires hospital, and who resolves to bring him a tree root he's uncovered--which he's certain looks just like his idol.

I'm glad to hear that the Tribeca Film Festival is taking place in NYC, just as Filmfest DC is wrapping up down here. There weren't any football-related entries in this year's Filmfest program, so far as I am aware. However, a year ago, there were at least a couple, including perhaps the best one I've seen in years, Bruno Barreto's "Romeo and Juliet Get Married." The title characters are rabid fans of Corinthians and Palmeiras, respectively; need I say more? I am curious as to whether anyone got to see it, in a film festival or otherwise, anywhere else outside of Brazil.
