Matchday 3: D.C. at Columbus
Here are your DCU starters:
As expected...
Perkins in goal; Namoff at right back, Boswell in the middle, McTavish on the left but with Gros covering a lot of ground on the flank; Olsen and Carroll supporting Gomez, Fred on the right; Moreno and Emilio up top.
Notable absences from the 18-man game-day roster: Clyde Simms (ankle) and Jamil Walker (coach's decision). Newcomer Nicholas Addlery is available tonight. Justin Moose, who got kicked in the nose during the week, is in uniform.
Feel free to use this thread for your pregame, in-game and immediate postgame thoughts. I'll create a new item very late tonight. Cheers!

Because McTavish spent the week in training pinching in toward the middle with Boswell. So that's the plan. We'll see if it's executed.
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 7:09 PM
This seems to be going back to more of last season, but it's a bit too bad because Gros has gotten quite a bit better going forward...
I think the key will be whether Fred provides good wide play and whether Boswell sticks to marks on plays developing on the wing.

So bench is Nolly - Erpen - Wilson - Moose - deRoux - Casal - Addlery?
Posted by: Zman | April 28, 2007 7:19 PM
McTavish simply is not very good. Yikes.
Posted by: Nogra Rover | April 28, 2007 7:21 PM
Yes -- Nolly, Erpen, Wilson, Casal, deRoux, Moose and Addlery on the bench.
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 7:25 PM
Nogra Rover you know that because you've seen McTavish start at LB how many times?
Lets see how he does before you start claiming he isn't good enough. He can't be any worse then Facundo.

THe United fans are singing LOUDLY! It's bleeding through on TV. Nice!
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 7:38 PM
Looks like about 100 DCU fans here
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 7:47 PM
For those of you not waiting for the Comcast delayed broadcast, how do the VT tribute jerseys look? Did they get the color right?
Posted by: T. Henry | April 28, 2007 7:50 PM
FYI, Dyachenko was dropped to developmental when Addlery was signed.
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 7:53 PM
IMHO, the unis are ugly. The maroon is a little too dark and doesn't look good with white shorts. Perkins' kit looks better, orange and blue. I think he should go to a red kit full-time.

Goal Crew...another defensive breakdown
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 8:05 PM
Oh god. we suck. Roberto Carlos for DP
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:07 PM
Every goal hurts that much more right now. Ugh. Thanks for the uni preview.
Posted by: T. Henry | April 28, 2007 8:08 PM
Jeff
I;m waiting for the tape delay, but
the times i have seen him, he has no touch, can't pass and is slow.
Posted by: Nogra Rover | April 28, 2007 8:10 PM
Emilio knocks in a hand of God goal!!!
...but the ref sees it and shows him the yellow.
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 8:15 PM
Fred needs to pick up his pace. He is also too easily knocked off the ball. Reminds me of another guy named Freddy.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:19 PM
!!!, what game are you watching? Fred is one of the best players on the field, especially in the later part of the 1st half.
Posted by: EssEff | April 28, 2007 8:24 PM
Half-time thoughts: the defense looks much more organized, Olsen has played the best of any United player on the field, Carroll and Gomez have done *nothing*. Well, the offense has done practically nothing.
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 8:27 PM
You're right, he took some time to get there but he is red hot now.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:27 PM
What happened on the goal by ezra?
Posted by: Kristina | April 28, 2007 8:28 PM
!!!, I must say that I didn't really watch the first half of the first half, so I guess we are both right. :-)
Ezra's goal = DC defenders ball-watching a rebound.
Posted by: EssEff | April 28, 2007 8:30 PM
Nice....just what we DON'T need is more ball watching. Hopefully, someone will light a fire under their butts at half.
Posted by: Kristina | April 28, 2007 8:31 PM
Here is the nightmare..
New York looks lethal and Angel has yet to play a match. Columbus is beating us and Schelotto has not yet played at match. Chicago is Chicago and New England still has that punk Twellman.
Scared yet? I am.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:33 PM
And that doesn't even consider the Blanco and Beckham signings.
We signed all the players we're gonna get. They're out there playing now...
that's what worries me. If we have to suffer like this until July....
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:36 PM
Another turnover in the midfield results in the Ezra goal.
More than anything I guess I just can't believe that we keep doing this and having to pay so dearly for it; furthermore, I can't help but feel like there's zero intensity in the way we're playing. I guess the lone exception being Fred who's working hard as you like on the right.
Gomez who?
Carroll who?
Here's to the hope of a better second half.
Posted by: Again? | April 28, 2007 8:36 PM
Moose for Carroll at the start of the second half...
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 8:36 PM
Tv says Moose for Fred, but that's probably wrong. I think I see Fred out there.
Posted by: EssEff | April 28, 2007 8:41 PM
Why is CSN STILL talking about the Wizards? I thought they were supposed to go over to the DCU game at 8:30?
Posted by: DCUfrvr | April 28, 2007 8:41 PM
Columbus has another dangerous sequence of three chances where the D has been ball-watching AGAIN. And where is the offense?!!
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 8:51 PM
Gomez booked for a dive in the box. Just keeps getting better right?
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 8:54 PM
That's now 4 DCU players booked? Just what we need...
Posted by: Kristina | April 28, 2007 8:55 PM
wish simms was available
Posted by: kim | April 28, 2007 8:59 PM
Yeah I know...maybe the results would be different then.
Posted by: Kristina | April 28, 2007 9:00 PM
Adderly in for Gomez.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 9:04 PM
Casal in for McTavish. here's hoping he does something.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 9:09 PM
lightning and rain delay
Posted by: Goff | April 28, 2007 9:21 PM
Lightning delay. La Barra has put the home fans to shame. The Crew fans booked it when the rain started. la Barra has been singing loudly and has gotten a lot of time on the Crew's home telecast. DCU can't complain about its supporters.
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 9:22 PM
Simms, please get healthy soon
Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | April 28, 2007 9:23 PM
Soccer gods...please favor us soon! Our fans are the best and yet DCU has played everygame with crap weather. Favor DCU so they can win and come to glory again!
Posted by: DCUfrvr | April 28, 2007 9:35 PM
I think there may be confidence issues in play here.
We are just not playing up to our abilities. I don't know what happened to this team after losing to Guadalajara but they need a team shrink as well as physical therapist.
Posted by: !!! | April 28, 2007 9:36 PM
Completely agree. If they don't start winning in the next few games, my confidence in Soehn's abilities as head coach will continue to dwindle. Although, I do give him props for benching Erpen for tonight's game.
Posted by: Kristina | April 28, 2007 9:41 PM
Match Delay ended....hopefully they can come out on fire.
Posted by: DCUfrvr | April 28, 2007 9:45 PM
"Our fans are the best"?
Posted by: 12th man | April 28, 2007 9:45 PM
A) CHEERS to Barra Brava who could easily be heard on Comcast.
B) Another poor defensive miscue (pass by McTavish or Carrol not certain) leads to a goal by an MLS Castoff. Krikey!!
C) Most telling moment of the game? Gomez and Moreno standing at the 18 with their hands on their hips.
This was after a flurry of UNITED movement that ended with Gros looping a crap ball toward goal.
Posted by: delantero | April 28, 2007 9:54 PM
I want to cry.
Posted by: Paul | April 28, 2007 9:56 PM
Note to delantero
It was Carroll's pass that Ezra intercepted and then made a run that resulted in two shots, one saved off the line by McTavish, and the rebound put away.

I'm starting to think there need to be some serious changes....to the coaching staff. Either that, or TS needs to figure out how to get these boys to play with some urgency, and passion.
Posted by: DCUfrvr | April 28, 2007 10:05 PM
wow. We looked pretty bad. It's just a few games, but...
If Simms is healthy next week, I might try him at center back. We need someone solid in the middle of the pitch. I'd go with something like:
Emilio
Moreno---Gomez
Gros---Olsen---Fred
Namoff--Simms--Boswell---Erpen
Perkins
I'd see if some team wants Carroll...maybe we could get a defender like Hejduk in return?
BTW, great in game comments, Mr. Goff. You are #1. I feel badly for Dyanchenko...he's now earning minimum wage, huh?
Posted by: j | April 28, 2007 10:42 PM
I almost have to agree with the comment that maybe something is wrong with the coaching staff. The team looks like they've never played with each other. There's only two new players in the starting lineup but no one can connect passes, and the decisiveness in the final third is completely lacking. The defense is crap, and they were lucky to only allow one goal with the amount of break downs and free chances allowed. And tonight's performance was against a Crew team that absolutely sucks. That is just a poor team, I mean Ezra Hendrickson, c'mon. And yet DC was somehow second best. I'm not panicking as much as completely baffled about what's going on. Something's amiss.
Posted by: G-Dub | April 28, 2007 10:44 PM
Basically last season's team one year older except you have Fred and Emilio instead of Freddy and Alecko. What's going on here?
Posted by: 12th man | April 28, 2007 10:50 PM
What's going to be the excuse this week??? Everyone said that we are good, give me a break. Something needs to be done now.
Moreno and Gomez are both in a funk.
Jaime may be better coming off the bench. I think Casal should get his chance to start.
Posted by: cw | April 28, 2007 11:13 PM
It's going to be a very long season. Look at Chivas v LA going on right now. That game is 1000x better than that POS we just watched in Columbus.
I thought McTavish looked OK. Certainly he can't be faulted for the goal. And Moose had a ton of energy and was making things happen in the second half.
Moreno seems to be pacing himself too much. And if Gomez wants DP money he'd better pick up his game.
Not sure how fair it is to blame to coach. These are pro athletes. They shouldn't need a coach to make them want to play with some passion.
Second half was a lot better than the first, but the Crew was really packing it in.
Posted by: Glenn | April 28, 2007 11:20 PM
Can't blame this one on Erpen.
Posted by: ML | April 28, 2007 11:23 PM
"Basically last season's team one year older except you have Fred and Emilio instead of Freddy and Alecko."
And instead of Nowak you have Soehn!

How do YOU know Gros will be covering a lot of ground on the flank? Do they include that as a note in the starting lineup? I think not. Good try, mister. Good try. Only time will tell.
