Another Argentine to MLS?

I am hearing that the Red Bulls are interested in Mariano Fernandez, a 28-year-old central defender from Nuevo Chicago in Argentina. He has played in Italy and Spain and nearly ended up in the Netherlands a few years ago. He will begin a tryout this week.

Also hearing the Galaxy may be in the running for a second-tier Brazilian forward. Do not have a name.

Guevara's destination? Honduras. Here is Michael Lewis's report.

Excellent news! Nueva Chicago can't keep from being relegated, and their attack is spear-headed by someone who could never score for United (Filomeno - and actually he is rarely used), so if the Bulls want to sign a defender from a team that can't defend, I say please hurry this transfer along!!!

Isn't that where C. Gomez came from? Goff, why do think players from Argentina are all of sudden eager to make the move to MLS? Better financial stability? Better life for family? I love the fact that players from Argentina are actually considering playing in the MLS. It adds to the talent pool. I just wish higher profile Argentinians were on their way such as Riquelme, Tevez, Crespo, M. Rodriguez, Messi, and Saviola.

MLS can't afford most top-tier Argentines. Others want to come here for the money, the lifestyle, the stress-free soccer environment...

Posted by: Goff | May 14, 2007 4:24 PM

I don't get it - DC and other teams are saying they don't even have cap space for 1 DP, and the RBs have 2 and are looking at more high profile signings? It's not like their non-DP players are cheaper either (I imagine Kovalenko, Wattereus, and a few other guys are making over the league average).

Posted by: pat | May 14, 2007 4:26 PM

this guy is not that high profile

Posted by: Goff | May 14, 2007 4:27 PM

Obviously the Red Bulls have a huge inflow of revenue from all those tickets they're selling.

lol

Posted by: Goff | May 14, 2007 4:28 PM

With the Galaxy signing Abel Xavier today, they definately need to think about shoring up the striker position...

To echo Goff in re lower stress around soccer - Nueva Chicago played this weekend in an empty stadium because their hosts barra brava has been, well, less hospitible than the one in RFK. Plus, the Nueva Chicago fans were planning to block the exit of the stadium after the game. Right now I cannot remember why, but I think it has to do with how poorly they have been playing.... River players last season had their cars damaged after losing to Racing by their own barra brava.... (And yes, C. Gomez grew up in the Nueva Chicago system, but then went on to play for a more important club- Independiente)

Heard anything about Bruce Arena going to Newcastle?

Posted by: JSF | May 14, 2007 4:33 PM

for a brown ale?

Posted by: Goff | May 14, 2007 4:35 PM

That would only make sense if Newcastle were planning on keeping Onyewu

Posted by: AlecW81 | May 14, 2007 4:47 PM

So when will the league stop trying to sell everyone the bull about cap space.

I mean LA has Donovan, Beck, Xavier (who I'd think would make at least league max 300K), and NY now has two DP's and guys like Kovalenko, Watterus, etc.

Does anyone honestly believe their under the cap?

Posted by: Dave | May 14, 2007 4:57 PM

I can't imagine an English club would accept an american manager.

Newcastle would loose much respect if that were to happen.

The only way an american could coach an english team would be if he played for them for years and was a star.

Perhaps McBride could pull it off in a few years, but probably not.

messi should just play for spain (he's a dual citizen) instead but i guess he gets more attention in argentina

re: da bruce to newcastle...

I could see where one could confuse bruce and big sam when viewing them from distance

Actually, according to Nueva Chicago's website, Mariano Fernandez was released in December. I think he would be a free transfer. http://www.nuevachicago.com/noticias.php?id=&idnoticia=416

They already have van den Burgh, Schopp, Waterreus, and Angel -- how can they add another Senior International?

Posted by: argo0 | May 14, 2007 5:09 PM

Doesn't van den Bergh have a Green Card?

Posted by: Kenobi | May 14, 2007 5:22 PM

I think Van den Bergh is a citizen, because his wife is an American (that's why he came to MLS in the first place).

I already wanted to know how LA planned on fitting Xavier into their cap situation; this Brazilian guy would have to play for free if they wanted to fit him in. Is LA just being given a free pass, a la MLS 10 years ago?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | May 14, 2007 5:23 PM

Come on, if Santiago Munez made it at Newcastle, so can Bruce!

Posted by: silentbob | May 14, 2007 5:25 PM

He's going to miss Nueva Chicago's cheerleaders, that's for sure (http://www.nuevachicago.com/fotosToreritas.php?id=93)

Posted by: Nordy | May 14, 2007 5:29 PM

That was the last straw. I'm moving to Argentina.

Its been a long time coming, but that just did it.

Posted by: bribri | May 14, 2007 5:33 PM

DC United should look into importing some of Argentina's cheerleaders. The camera work is excellent also ;)

Posted by: CY | May 14, 2007 5:56 PM

Right now, LA is about $107,000 under the cap and has several partial allocations of $$$$ that could be used to legally stretch the cap for this season. Not saying they won't go over the cap with Xavier, but depending on what they've signed him for, it's possible they stayed within the cap.

Those girls have nice buttocks

Posted by: Henchlow | May 14, 2007 6:57 PM

Man, you have to love family entertainment. Maybe Scores can sponsor United . . . .

Posted by: d | May 14, 2007 7:04 PM

The Galaxy made several trades prior to the draft and recieved those partial allocations, which would pay for Xavier.

Posted by: Vince | May 14, 2007 8:11 PM

Isn't LA really going to be hurting next season though? They have to get rid of either Donovan or Becks, right? or acquire another DP slot? and don't these partial allocations end up costing them next year if they are being picked up elsewhere this year? I guess maybe I just don't understand these salary "cap" rules. Are they written down somewhere? A cocktail napkin that Gazidis carries in his pocket or something?

Posted by: Glenn | May 14, 2007 8:52 PM

Just to think when I wear my Nueva Chicago shirt the "La Nueva Seguros" logo just covers my slightly ample belly while for the Toreritas, the logo just "covers" their ..... Do the Toreritas get relegated as well or could DCU pick them up on a free?

Posted by: griffin1108 | May 14, 2007 9:23 PM

Maybe the Toreritas are what Gomez nees to get untracked?

Posted by: griffin1108 | May 14, 2007 9:26 PM

LA has all their money tied up in the bigger names already mentioned, and then have a bunch of poor kids around them. Next year at the very least they will have to trade some of the kids away because guys like Sturgis are going to expect a raise.

Posted by: jgildea8 | May 15, 2007 7:57 AM

I think Gomez is already "untracked"...what he needs to do is get ON TRACK. Sorry, this is one of my pet peeves.

Posted by: Glenn | May 15, 2007 9:06 AM

Untracked, on-track, entracked. Who cares? Just show me the Toreritas!

Posted by: Anonymous | May 15, 2007 9:46 AM

DC United???? Uh..NO..NEW YORK RED BULLS!!!! DC is so over!!!
