Before the Weekend Arrives.....

.....a few things to pass along:

*For those who understand Polish, here is a follow-up story about DCU's pursuit of Bortosz Bosacki. As we reported, Soehn and Kasper were in attendance at his game the other night. They had planned to meet with Bosacki, but he left the game early with an illness. There was some discussion with the club. It appears to be a longshot, but now that DCU has made contact in person, we'll have to see how things unfold leading up to the re-opening of the June 15 international window.

*My man Jon DeNunzio (Post soccer editor) has put together a list of the top pay increases and pay cuts in MLS:

AND...I officially feel even worse for Nicky. The fact that Tino still makes that much money compared to other players in the league makes me vomit in my mouth a little, then spit it out.

It's about friggin' time for Marco's tribute match!

DIABLO! DIABLO! DIABLO!

When will cobi be fully removed from our collective consciousness? his tiny goat-like cloven hooves terrify me.

Posted by: scared of cobi | May 11, 2007 12:54 PM

Carlos Ruiz gets a 20% raise on top of $360k?? Maybe he just gets $15k for every practice he shows up for.

Look at Carroll way up there on that list . . .

Posted by: gringo | May 11, 2007 1:02 PM

Kirovski? A raise?

Whoever his agent is, every other MLS player should sign up with him. That is unbelievable he got a raise.

On a side note, remember when he was the next great American player?

Posted by: Chris | May 11, 2007 1:05 PM

A 40-game unbeaten streak? Is than an international record?

Goff, did Soehn give you any indication we would not propound ourselves?

Posted by: Arrrlington | May 11, 2007 1:35 PM

I'm just worried after seeing the word "Bulgarian" twice in the above article. :)

Posted by: Rick in Ashburn | May 11, 2007 1:37 PM

why even give us that "translation"? thanks for the great work goffer, as always!

Posted by: l st | May 11, 2007 1:38 PM

Why is NE paying Noonan so much? He's always hurt and hasn't contributed much to them lately. Those lists are very interesting. Somebody had a lot of time on his hands.

Posted by: Glenn | May 11, 2007 1:44 PM

3 of the top 10 pay raises were inked by New England. None of them were Joseph.

Posted by: Kinney | May 11, 2007 1:50 PM

Did DeNunzio give up the high school sports editor gig?

Goffer -- tell Jon that Lazy Fox expects to see him out on Friday nights this summer and that Juventus is still a bunch of cheaters!! Forza Roma!!

Posted by: Steve | May 11, 2007 2:02 PM

Is it just me, or are the people with the big raises collectively just not quite as good so far this year as last? The post-contract letdown year seems to hold as true in MLS as every other league.

Posted by: greg | May 11, 2007 2:02 PM

It'll be great to see Marco on the field at RFK again.

Posted by: Chico | May 11, 2007 2:11 PM

Off subject, but did anyone hear about the high probability of Las Vegas being the next expansion city. Supposedly they are going to build a retractable roof soccer specific stadium connected to a CASINO. I can't wait for the DC United game to be played there. What a vacation that will be.

Posted by: DC United Fan | May 11, 2007 2:18 PM

El Diablo was a man among boys in those first couple of seasons.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 11, 2007 2:22 PM

A segment using a different (I did not say better) translator:
director of sports lech affirms, that it knows about interest Bosackim and presence of americans, but as yet, it leads no conversations with them. It has not entered for with offer " " DC United Kolejorza. If however, it will decide to pay amount odstępnego, must not make it. However, lech is not interested departure of defender. ... I did not talk to americans after match

Club aware of DCU interest. No DCU conversation with club. Club not interested in departure of defender. No DCU conversation with player. Plus he was sick and only played 45 minutes.

Goff's choice of the term "longshot" seems on target.

Posted by: Postmaster | May 11, 2007 2:23 PM

that translation is one of the greatest things I have ever read.

And I wonder why a friend of mine was suspended from school for a semester for handing in a paper for French class that he had written in English then translated using a free online translator.

Man, did that article make me giddy.

There are so many great passages. It is hard to pick a favorite.

"Yourself Barter transaction Grapple until businesses outwits wherebyprzez co bids " very take it easy ".'

might take the cake. but who knows. Everytime I settle on one, another popps up and hoggs all the glory.

Posted by: bribri | May 11, 2007 2:24 PM

greg-

The one I'm noticing that is bucking the trend is Kirovski. Last year, he became a sub for most of the 2nd half of the season due to poor performance. This season, he's starting despite the number of offensive reinforcements brought in by Colorado. I'm not saying he deserved a raise (based on last year, he deserved a cut), but he is playing better than he had previously.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | May 11, 2007 2:32 PM

That translation has language for both the erudite and the plebeian.

Shakespeare:
"Nor do I I see , where is the Washington as well so long thus much bids Not bids not , whereas everybody whom me knowing scholarship"

Spinal Tap:
"therein goal to 11"

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 11, 2007 2:40 PM

this is a rough summary of the article:

they mention that Soehn and Kasper came to see the game (BB only played 45 minutes and then asked to be taken off at half time b/c he was feeling ill) and that Goff at WP had the rumors and BB's goals in the WC in his blog

Marek Pogorzelczyk, the sporting director of Poznan Lech said he is aware of the interest from DCU in BB but that he is not engaged in any talks with them for now, DCU has not made any offers. All they have to do is agree to pay the 'exit' fee and they can start the talks. But in general Poznan Lech is not intrested in letting BB go.

BB himself is very calm about the situation. He did not talk to the Americans after the game, they know the 'exit' fee and how to go about it. For now i'm not saying no, but i'm very close to Lech and to the city of Poznan, I'll leave such things to my manager and I'll concentrate on my game. In closing he says that there were some Spanish clubs that have also been intrested in him.

ps
when they mention 'Bulgarian' in the article it is b/c the stadium is located at Bulgarian Ave

Posted by: marek | May 11, 2007 2:48 PM

Good point Chest Rockwell (where did THAT name come from?). There are a few exceptions like Jovan, but the trend is similar even in MLS. I'm sure there's a sports shrink out there who has used the phenomenon for their Masters Thesis or Dissertation. For my 2 cents, I think El Diablo was incredibile in his prime, and I'll believe the Poland singning when it happens, but not until then.

MLS good. Vegas vacation good.
MLS-Vegas vacation BRILLIANT!!!

I'm so glad that MLS is sensible regarding Vegas. It's moved from a gaming destination to a tourist destination with a healthy side of gaming. You have to worry about corruption just as much, or just as little, with a team in any city.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | May 11, 2007 3:40 PM

It was going to come sooner or later on the etcheverry tribute, hell they already had one in bolivia. I see basically a MLS all star match of the past MLS greats vs. the 96-97' DC United squad Hopefully in their old uniform too!!!

Posted by: Bolivian DC Fan | May 11, 2007 3:59 PM

"I'm so glad that MLS is sensible regarding Vegas. It's moved from a gaming destination to a tourist destination with a healthy side of gaming."

I'm not so sure about that. They tried the "family-friendly town" act a while back, but it wasn't working (when kids are at the amusement park, parents aren't gambling). Now it's "What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas."

Vegas gets the single big event things like the NBA All-Star game and boxing, but I don't see it as a venue for pro sports, especially on that requires lots of running in the desert heat.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 11, 2007 4:31 PM

Isn't a fear of corruption basically the reason no other major sports have gone to Las Vegas? I'd think that the capital of the gaming industry has a high concentration of sketchy people doing sketchy things. Don't think that soccer will be immune.

To bring things full circle on the discussions du jour, the low salaries of some MLS players make it more at risk of corruption, not less.

Posted by: Arrrlington | May 11, 2007 4:35 PM

I-270: I wasn't talking about about family tourism--they have Orlando. Vegas is tourism for adults with lots of good restaurants and entertainment of all sorts including gaming.

Season ticket holders would be drawn from the locals including the large Latino community and entertainment corporations. In the article they mention the stadium as being indoors (meaning climate controlled).

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | May 11, 2007 4:44 PM

The more I think about the Vegas possibility, the more I like it. The game needs a little more grime and danger in this country.

Posted by: Kev | May 11, 2007 5:01 PM

Yeah, the games would have to be indoors; for the cheerleaders' safety. The poles have to be bolted to the floor and the ceiling.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 11, 2007 5:15 PM

From the translation, I think "It must have been jackass infection" about 12 lines down should be this year's "send that man to hospital."

Goff may have to put Marek on payroll.

Posted by: gringo | May 11, 2007 5:16 PM

re: I-270;

DC is largely 'marketed' as the Washington monument, the capitol building, and the white house. We all know thats not all there is to the city. The same standard shouldn't apply to Vegas.

Posted by: d, dc | May 11, 2007 5:17 PM

"Maybe it is just the way the headers were written."

That's the problem. And DiNunzio is an editor?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 11, 2007 5:18 PM

No need to worry about the desert heat. They'll find a way to make the whole stadium air conditioned...plus, they'll have little betting/gaming consoles on hte armrest of each seat that'll be the size of a cell phone screen. This will make it possible to bet on a game in real time, which would definitely be a tourist draw. I can't imagine many in Vegas that would be into soccer, but regardless, once their money's on the line, they'll be into the game a whole lot!!!;) OK, everything I told you was a load of b.s., but it would be 'cool', wouldn't it?:)

Posted by: Dave the Wave | May 11, 2007 5:56 PM

Vegas can solve the betting/corruption concerns by simply taking the Vegas team off the books. No more problem. That's what's going to happen if the NBA is ever going to have a team there. And I'm sure the MLS isn't exactly moving the bookies either.

Posted by: Luis | May 12, 2007 8:41 AM

the santiago bernabeu has GIGANTIC heaters to heat the open ceiling stadium (you can even feel them on the 2nd row in) so i'm pretty sure las vegas could cope

Posted by: joel | May 13, 2007 1:11 PM

Re: raise/cut data ... I'll ask Goff to go fix this, but I gave him the 2006/2007 info in the wrong order. The overall headers are right -- Twellman, Noonan, etc did indeed get raisers, and Pope, Jones, etc got cuts.

And I-270, it's "DeNunzio."
