It's Wednesday (Sheffield's Favorite Day)
-- First-round pairings for the U.S. Open Cup are set, with a few local entries in action June 12. Crystal Palace USA (USL2) will travel to the Jersey shore to face the Ocean City Barons (PDL), the Richmond Kickers (USL2) will host the Michigan Bucks (PDL) and the Aegean Hawks FC, an amateur side from Arlington with an interesting background, will visit the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL2). The second round is June 26. Eight MLS teams begin play in the round of 16 on July 10.
-- Gold Cup rosters have been unveiled. Insider loyalists have already seen the U.S. squad. Other names of interest: former D.C. United players Ronald Cerritos and Eliseo Quintanilla (El Salvador); Martin Nash, brother of NBA star Steve Nash (Canada); former Chivas USA midfielder Amado Guevara (Honduras); and ex-George Mason star Anthony Noreiga (Trinidad & Tobago).
-- After a fine performance Saturday for Bolivia, Jaime Moreno seems likely to play in Copa America.
-- Since choosing to play for Wales many years ago, Ryan Giggs's chances of appearing in a World Cup were always quite slim. Today he announces his retirement from international play.
-- I will host a live online chat on washingtonpost.com at 1 p.m. today (get your questions in early!) and make a brief appearance on Comcast SportsNet's Washington Post Live around 5:15 p.m. to discuss United. Tune in.....

To bad are aren't any United players on the US squad. We'll lose for sure to Bolivia, now.
Seriously, though, good for Jaime.

Maybe the U.S. could call up Agoos, so Jaime can burn him one more time for old time's sake. ;-)

Wow, how bad is El Salvador these days to have those 2 guys on the roster?

Wednesday is probably the least favorite day for the red half of the Steel City.

I checked out the website for the team Nash plays for, the White Caps. They are trying to build a waterfront stadium, and although the design wouldn't work for us it seems pretty cool.

Waterfront means waterfront.

Goff,
MLSU is reporting:
"Real Salt Lake Signs Richie Kotschau
In a move to help improve their central defense, Real Salt Lake has signed veteran defender Richie Kotschau who has been training with the team for the past couple of weeks."
Do you know if this is their major acquisition that was rumored for this week? While they clearly need defensive help, I don't think Richie counts as a major acquisition, at least in my mind.

Giggsy retiring... I always wondered what England would have been with both Giggs and Beckham on the squad.

Goff,
What stations will be broadcasting the Gold Cup and Copa America? Thank you.

Gold Cup - FSC
Copa America - GolTV

The Gold Cup matches will also be on TeleFutura. That's WMDO in the DC area, available via cable or over the air if you can pick up the weak signal (ch. 47 - same channel for DirecTV I think).
Copa America will also be available on Univision or Galavision.

Gracias for the info.

Good info on the Aegean Hawks, hope they do well and make it past Harrisburg.
Probably the greatest thing about the very under appreciated US Open cup is that so many of these players have the potential of being seen by the MLS and USL clubs, who otherwise may never have a chance.

Wait a minute. Either:
a)RSL is making a "move to help improve their central defense"
or
b)Real Salt Lake has signed veteran defender Richie Kotschau
Which is it?

Speaking of Sheffield Wednesday--where is it or what happened to it? One just hears of Sheffield United.
Posted by: A. Hardwick | May 30, 2007 1:08 PM
Wednesday and the Blades will renew their derby next season in the Championship. It's been a slow rebuilding process for Sheffield Wednesday over the last few years, they hit rock bottom in the third tier. Promoted via the playoffs two seasons ago and finished in the top 10 this year. Despite their struggles, Wednesday have kept their attendance avg over 20k in the lower divisions.

Kotschau is definitely not a major acquisition but he was still fairly decent last year before he broke his leg.
DC could use someone like him to give Erpen, Boz and Namoff an occasional day off. Kotschau, if healthy, probably upgrades a few of the lousy defensive teams starting XI - like RSL or Columbus. Maybe even the NY whatevers.

Owls need to get back into the EPL. Just aint the same without 'em!

Vic,
The DERBY COUNTY RAMS can certainly try to fill the void :)
Posted by: Graham | May 30, 2007 3:32 PM
say it ain't so giggsy!!! Just like so many other great players, he will never grace a World Cup which is such a shame.
Posted by: owendylan | May 30, 2007 4:08 PM
I always have wished Wales had a couple more decent players because I think its a little sad that a player as great as Ryan Giggs was never able to play in a World Cup. The guy is a legend.
