Matchday 7: Houston at DCU
Just a bit warm out here at Estadio RFK. Lot 8 bustling with holiday-weekend tailgaters. Club figures 17,000 to 18,000 in attendance tonight, maybe more, depending on walk-up. No local TV. Tom Soehn, an early arrival, just finished a solitary jog around the field.
STARTING LINEUP: no surprises
Perkins; Namoff, Boswell, Erpen, Gros; Fred, Carroll, Gomez, Olsen; Kpene, Emilio.
Moose is not on the 18-man game-day roster because of illness. Reserves are Nolly, Casal, deRoux, Dyachenko, Simms, Addlery, Burch.
In case you missed it, here is a link to my story about Marc Burch that appeared in today's paper.
Also, here is an amusing leftover quote from the other day. I had asked Soehn if the team had been involved in any trade talks recently.
His response: "People are offering things to us."
Like what?
"I can't say that," he responded with a laugh. "These are things you've got to keep quiet or else rumors get started."
Exactly! We love rumors.
More laughter from Soehn.
"There hasn't been any interest on our side. There are ALWAYS trade talks. How about that? It's part of the league. It's a monologue, not a dialogue."
Okay, that's all for now. As always, feel free to share your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts in the comments section here. And as always, I will create a new thread very late tonight with brief analysis, player ratings and bonus quotes.
FYI, I will have some exclusive national soccer news in the next day or two. (Remain calm. It's nothing urgent, nothing dramatic, but of interest to the American soccer community.)

While you're out at Estadio RFK, I'm perusing the early dead-tree edition of the Sunday Post, including the coming week's TV listings, so that I can instruct my VCR appropriately. Do I understand correctly that the Deuce will not be offering up an MLS telecast this Thursday? (I do see the USA-China friendly on Saturday, though.)

So is that teams offering players to us or offering other things for our players?

does anyone know if there's an audio feed online? (other than the one on MLS/DCU's page, which is saying I need to sign up to listen to.)

I'm listening to Tony Limarzi on WMET. He read off the starting lineup in a way that made it sound like a 3-5-2 rather than a 4-4-2 (i.e., he placed Gros in midfield). Is that what is going on?

Thanks!

It's a 4-4-2. Same as last week.

Is anyone listening on the MLS site? It sounds like someone is washing dishes and talking on a CB radio in the background.

I guess because many of us couldn't watch it, we had fewer comments posted. What was your take on the handball inside the box? Was it a lapse in Gros' thinking, or was it likely to be an inevitable goal? What made United win?

And we win!!
Amazing game by Gomez

Always good to win. Gomez came to play and had some room to work for once. Kpene was great putting on pressure and fighting for every ball. Addlery was definitely a downgrade when he came in. No hustle, lots of standing around.
Great game by Emilio. He was all over the place. His touch was off in the first half but got better.
Fred seemed to have a sub-par match. I liked Simms out there when he replaced him.
The defense did enough. Looked very organized in the first half but were under lots of pressure in the second.
The Erp-fu to Ching's head was a bit lucky not to be a PK. It looked like he kicked Ching and not the ball. But Ching, who I used to really like, is turing into a punk, so maybe he had it coming. :-) Other than that I thought Erpen had a very good game.
Houston is a good team.
Jair Maruffo had a terrible game. Almost Abbey Okulaja bad. He let way too much go and by the end it was a real battle. If had called some of the holding fouls early it might cleaned up instead of turning into such a physical battle. And the no-call when Kpene got run over in the penalty area was bad as was the no-call when Dyachenko got hacked down towards the end.

Now that is a tease if I have ever seen one.
So...yeah...that DC United game. Fun match.

This was my first MLS game, and I was won over completely. Great atmosphere (La Barra Brava are awesome), and the first half was full of excitement.
I was excited for Kpene, but I don't think he was in his element. If he has to jump for long balls and play with his back to goal, he's not effective. He's too small for that role, and got outjumped every time.
Gros and Namoff played very well defensively, and made up for Erpen's usual silliness. And , agreed, that karate kick should have been a penalty.
Perkins was excellent, and save on the PK was amazing.
I will be a regular after this experience.

!!!!A) I pissed in a urinal next to Kevin Payne tonight. No, really on the mezzanine, the VIP level. Wow, almost surreal, as if I didn't know what to say, and really didn't know if it was appropriate really to say anything . . . .

Kpene needs to do some weightlifting, or something. He was bouncing off of opposing players like a ping-pong ball, and not being able to get them off balance.

Kewl! You're not the only one. I got bitten with the bug in cold and rainy March, during the CONCACAF games.
