United Observations
Let's speculate for a moment, shall we?
During United's intrasquad scrimmage this morning, Kpene and Moreno played together on the front line, while Emilio worked with the other squad. The first-line defenders were Boswell and Erpen in the middle with Simms on the right and Namoff on the left. Interesting, eh?
Before we get carried away, it should be noted that it is only Wednesday and the coaching staff will weigh their options for a couple more days. But with Gros struggling at left back and Emilio in a scoring drought, perhaps we will see some changes Saturday in Los Angeles.
Asked about Simms's position, Tom Soehn responded: "We're always trying different things. That's it."
So read into it what you will.
Also of note: Brian Carroll sat out with an undisclosed leg injury. The team said he just needed a day of rest. Soehn rushed from the stadium and headed for the airport, declining to reveal his destination but saying he would not be at practice tomorrow. A club official tells me Soehn and Dave Kasper are headed to the Bay Area to attend festivities surrounding the Chinese national team visit and friendly against the United States in San Jose. Soehn will rejoin United on Friday in L.A.

Thanks for answering the second part of my question on whether they would be at Spartan Stadium this weekend. Any word on McTavish?

No chance he could be looking at a Chinese player, is there?
Posted by: Juan-John | May 30, 2007 3:38 PM
OK... who's on the Chinese team that's worth signing... defender? winger?
Posted by: TCompton | May 30, 2007 3:39 PM
So which Chinese national teamer, or more likely american nat teamer getting his first call-up is he talking to?
my guess: Simek. He's Sheffield Wednesday, and Goffster had the sheffield wednesday quote. He's 22, big right back and capable of playing here.
Posted by: DCAustinite | May 30, 2007 3:39 PM
...sounds to me like Will Chang is throwing a big old par-tay, and Tommy and Dave don't want to miss it. ;-)
Posted by: EdTheRed | May 30, 2007 3:42 PM
DCAustinite,
No way is it Simek. Sheffield Wednesday reportedly refused a 3 million pound transfer of him to Everton. That kind of money is way beyond any MLS team for a right back. More likely the Chinese U23er that DC was interested earlier this year. Maybe Nguyen on loan from PSV? But that would seem unlikely.

Goff-
question for you. I know you reported that Willis left for personal reasons and on the website it says hes been suspended-did he not leave on good terms? and if so does that mean he's ruined his chances playing for the first team? (or any other MLS team for that matter?)
Posted by: HFIC | May 30, 2007 3:49 PM
Looks like 25 year-old Sun Xiang, left back for the Chinese team is current unattached to any team after a loan to PSV.

We won't get much service from the wings like that. Not that Gros is a phenomenal crosser, but bringing in Simms (whose crossing in the matches against Chivas was, at best, questionable) and putting Namoff on his weaker side basically puts all the weight of service from out wide on Fred and Olsen.
With the absences LA will be dealing with (Albright at RB, Martino at LM), I would think attacking the flanks is a priority. Gros may not be doing brilliantly at left back, but I think he can handle old man Cobi. Is the idea that the outside backs will be conservative and the wide midfielders will play further up than normal?

I love the resources this board comes up with when rumor mongering. Seriously, you guys are amazing.

WOW. Three Insider updates AND an online chat in one day (and its only 4pm), that is top notch work Goff!!

Sun Xiang would be quite a coup fulfilling a huge need.
Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | May 30, 2007 4:15 PM
Is Sun the one we were trying to look at during that QPR brawl?
Posted by: RIP General | May 30, 2007 4:21 PM
benching emilio? soehn is truly scared to bump moreno to the bench. sure emilio hasn't scored recently...and neither has moreno, pk's aside. please. i don't want to see that happen.
Posted by: antonio | May 30, 2007 4:25 PM
I doubt that Sun was the player Kasper was scouting at the QPR brawl. Wasn't that the Chinese U23 team playing that day? Sun is 25

You've really got to love it when Goff starts his notes with, "Let's speculate for a moment, shall we?"
We certainly wil!

To answer some questions:
I am sure Soehn and Kasper have their eye on a Chinese player, but they have their eye on a lot of int'l players these days. It should also be noted that Will Chang is hosting some events in SF (where he lives) as part of the Chinese team visit and invited some DCU folks out there.
Kiki Willis's career in MLS appears to be over. He didn't return to the team as scheduled and did not return phone messages from the team. He was a developmental player to begin with, so I would be surprised if we see him anywhere in the league again.

I would think that with all of Moreno's travelling the past week and his injury that this would be a perfect weekend to give him a "rest" and bring him in around the 60 minute mark. The question for this year (as opposed to last year's: what will Nowak do with Freddy this game) is how DC United manages Jaime Moreno. Hopefully, it is DCU managing Jaime and not Jaime dictating what DCU does. If memory serves me correctly, the game where Jaime came on in the second half is the game that halted our precipitous downward plunge

Is it even worth noting that there are two teams playing in San Fran this weekend? Perhaps the player is on the US squad?
Posted by: David | May 30, 2007 5:01 PM
I doubt it.
Posted by: Goff | May 30, 2007 5:44 PM
I submitted a question to Goff's WP Live interview which didn't get used. I asked if Gros might not go to the bench in favor of Namoff, with Simms taking over at right back (Simms played well there in the reserve match.)I'm tempted to say something like "great minds think alike," but Tommy might be offended!
Posted by: tcal | May 30, 2007 5:47 PM
I think it has more to do with the Chinese being in the country than the makeshift U.S. team for this one friendly. But you never know what Kasper and Co. are up to these days.

Sportsinteraction.com has the following odds for Soehn's visit to Cali...
Scout Chinese player 3/1
Scout US Nat player 10/1
Party with Chang Push
Seriously though, it would make perfect sense if they were going out there to get a look at Sun. He's a man without a club. He's young (25). He doesn't sound like someone that wants to go back to playing in China. He would fill an obvious need for United (LB), although Goff seems to think we'll be signing a CB in the coming transfer window. Let's see....!!!!
Posted by: Keenan | May 30, 2007 7:03 PM
I'm sure we aren't signing any Chinese players, or American players. We only sign South Americans these days, remember?
Posted by: Duke Cuneo | May 30, 2007 7:25 PM
Hopefully the Chinese guy speaks Spanish so that he can communicate with our first teamers!!!

I can see benching Emilio and Gros but I'm still wondering what Fred is doing for us on the field? Kpene is putting all three of them to shame and at a small fraction of the price.
If we are going to speculate on why they are going to the game I'm betting its for the Chinese food...and maybe some Vietnamese...Nguyen anyone?

For however many ZZZ's it's worth, while walking to RFK today to watch the Nats-Dodgers game, I saw Hizzoner Fenty standing outside the Armory.
As I passed him, I asked, "D'you think you can get us a soccer stadium?"
He pointed to me, smiled, and replied, "You got it."
Resume narcolepsy.

The Chinese team is also playing against RSL next Thursday.
If he doesn't speak much english, it is a matter of time before boswell.com starts mandarin-language outtakes, I guess. Or perhaps Facundo has a Kill Bill flashback and drops some 8th Dan ErpFu Iron Bicycle Kick Technique...I hope they sign Stephen Chow at center back...
Posted by: Erick | May 31, 2007 12:49 AM
I hope Soehn's visit to Cali is to sign a Chinese player... think of the millions of chinese youth wearing DCU jerseys... Talk about a Blackout! ;-)
Moreno should sit and come in as a sub after all his globetrotting these past few days. Emilio and Kpene need to get into a groove... just how much longer can Jaimito go?
BTW, does anybody know any good Jaimito jokes? In the southern-most South American country, Jaimito jokes are akin to Little Johnny jokes...

This trip of Soehn's, coupled with the trip to China for the Sports Conference a couple weeks ago, means that Sun is going to be a member of DC United. We've got all the pieces in place for him, and a Chinese-American owner who can woo this kid like no one else in the world, and in Will's own backyard in Cali. It's a done deal.
Posted by: Grotus | May 31, 2007 3:57 PM
I agree with Antonio - Emilio wouldn't be in a scoring drought if he took the penalties instead of Jaime. Jaime has not score a goal in a league match since Sept 29 of 2006, when he came on as a 2nd half sub.
I love Jaime but he needs to accept he's not a 90 minute player anymore, at least not currently.
