Vacation? What Vacation?

We've got futbol this weekend. So while the rest of the nation (lower case 'n') grumbles in traffic heading to the beach, the Nation will be here discussing true patriotic matters -- like, um, the United-Dynamo match. Now what is more traditional than that?

I'll be back later with news and notes from D.C.'s training session at RFK and you can read about United's "new" defender on washingtonpost.com this evening or Saturday morning. (Calm down now, when I say "new", I mean a current player who has embraced defending as a new position.)

Meantime, feel free to discuss any national or international matters right here.....

I always thought Dyachenko would make a good defender.

And don't forget that this weekend United are supporting the Capitol Hill Community Foundation in its effort to assist displaced Eastern Market businesses. $3 of every ticket sold to the Dynamo match will go toward the cause.

Goff, what's up with this rumor about William Chang purchasing an English Premiership Club? Have you heard anything about this?

SG-

Are we looking at a lunchtime announcement for the two October friendlies? Sooner? Later?

Thanks

Re: Eastern Market support, great contribution by DCU to a worthy and important moral/morale cause in DC. Supporting a longstanding institution and source of income for many local businesses is a sign that they understand their role in the community at large. It won't get them national headlines, but it will help men and women to get back on their feet financially. Bravo!

Soehn's moving Emelio to the center of defense and dropping Boswell to the bench.

Logan c:

yeah, kinda shows, once again, how tone deaf the second tennant of estadio de RFK is, huh? They have played 8 home games since, imagine the Goodwill they could have engendered by giving, say, a dollar per ticket from their series against the Os last weekend. But then, while United did the jersey auction for VT, the nats needed the sports authority to donate caps. Imagine how great a sports town this would be if every team was run like United...sigh

I assume that Marc Burch is the "new" defender.

"current player who has embraced defending as a new position"

Wait, John Harkes has un-retired and after 10 years he's finally OK with playing right back? Now that's breaking news.

Posted by: Looking Dangerous | May 25, 2007 9:54 AM

isn't Goff talking about Gros? he's the one "who has embraced defending as a new position."

question about the Eastern Market fundraiser - does this include season tickets and everything, or just tickets sold at the gate? either way, it's awesome, i was just curious.

Posted by: pat | May 25, 2007 10:18 AM

Re: Eastern Market, it's not clear from the team's announcements, but I would guess that they'll simply donate an amount that equals $3 x attendance (season tickets + other sales). It is awesome and it shows how DCU knows that it is part of this community.

Certainly, Goff is talking about Gros...

Bleed for your team !!

Ok Steve and folks,

I'm paraphrasing from the Brian Straus piece in the express today when he quotes Troy Perkins as saying something like "what's been missing [from the offense]is that last pass, that final touch." How many people would join me in completely disagreeing with this statement?

I watched the Red Bull/Fire game last night and Chicago reminded me of.... you guessed it DC. They tried shoving the ball down the middle about a million times. They took few if any dangerous shots outside the box and instead of slicing passes to runners off the ball they fell, all game, for a very high line played by NY. Sarachan even said in his interview after the half that NY was "teasing" them with a high line.

So to read this morning that Perkins thinks that it is that last touch, that final pass that is the problem.... ugghhh..

Let's hope that as Fred and Emelio, Kepne and Casal get more familiar with the rest of the team that our attack picks up. MLS defenses have shown that they can defend that last touch, last pass. Especially when it comes from having 5 guys within 3 yards of each other right in front of goal all trying to cleverly put someone through to finish.

I bring this up knowing that there are other opinions out there and I would love to hear them.

Hope to see everyone tomorrow! My son's 5th b-day! Yay!

Vamos United!

I think Goff is refering to Erpen.

Posted by: asfoolasiam | May 25, 2007 11:15 AM

One would think that with United's support of the Eastern Market cause that it would serve to stifle certain asinine comments from low-level, carrion-feeding D.C. corrupticos, er, I mean politicos, who accuse D.C. of ignoring it's self-imposed mandate of bringing sport to the youth of SouthEast and Anacostia.

This sort of shows the codependent relatioship United has with D.C. City Government, worthy of Dr. Phil...there she is, Ms. United, dress a shambles, mascara running, eyes welling, she defends him, say he's a good man, a decent man, he just drinks too much, then get gets surly and does things he shouldn't, she waits for the day he will come to back to her, move back in and stop throwing away her rent and baby formula money away on shiny trinkets for that floozy-with-clap-whats-her-name-Nationals...

I don't know if this is something the league would give a rat's patoot about, but now that it looks like the SJ Quakes might be returning next year, does that pose an issue b/c of Houston's crest very closely resembling SJ's once and future crest?

While I would normally be thrilled to donate blood to the DC United Blood Drive, I'm afriad that my blood on Saturday will most likely be to thin for donation purposes.

Granted, whoever my blood went to might get a quick buzz from it... if that's even possible.

@ Dan

I agree with the points you made re: the offense. Here's the thing though -- I have to take Perkins' insights with a grain of salt. He's a defender, and a keeper at that. He might have brilliant analysis of what's wrong with the back line, but his thoughts on the front of the formation are muddied by the lack of an offensive perspective and about 80 yards of turf. I'd be much more interested in what Gomito or Kpene or Fred thinks about the problems with the attack.

Does anyone know if the game will be on TV besides HDNet. I will be in Vegas this weekend and wanted to TiVo the game.

Posted by: DC United Fan | May 25, 2007 11:57 AM

I believe the game is on Comcast

Posted by: CY | May 25, 2007 12:27 PM

CY, DC United Fan:

Nope, no Comcast. Comcast will be showing live coverage of the ACC Baseball Tourny. Game is strictly HDNET. Not even MLSLive.tv, which is a crying shame.

That sucks, hopefully they will show it in the casino. I also try my best to find out if Vegas will become the next expansion city. Can you imagine the Barra Brava strolling down the strip heading to the game. Talk about trouble, it could make the Green Street Hooligans look like sober pups!!!! VAMOS UNITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention using up all the exclamation points. Now there aren't any for anyone else to use.
