DCU News and Notes

Greetings from Estadio RFK/Stade RFK/RFK Stadion.....

Here is what you need to know:

-- Guy-Roland Kpene (groin, abdominal), Clyde Simms (ankle) and Kasali Yinka Casal (ankle) jogged on the side and will be reevaluated throughout the week. Guy told me that he feels fine but that the medical staff has told him to take it easy for a bit. Tom Soehn thinks Guy might participate in full workouts tomorrow.

-- Defender Kim Jaggy and forward Mira Mupier began their trials today and will be in camp for as long as necessary for the club to evaluate them. "We're always looking for options to make our team better," Soehn said. "As we continue to go through games and figure out what our needs are, we'll continue to bring guys in and fill holes and needs."

Mupier was at United's indoor combine in January and although D.C. was interested at the time, he wanted to pursue European opportunities. "We'll evaluate and see where he has gotten since he's been gone," Soehn said. Mupier is eligible for a developmental contract.

-- Olsen was the center of attention after practice with the gathered media. The Sports Bog was in attendance. Be sure to read his material this afternoon. One bit of news: Olsen said he, Bobby Boswell and Bryan Namoff have been instructed by the USSF to get immunization shots in case they are selected for Copa America. (Is that really necessary for Venezuela?)

During training, after scoring yet another goal, Olsen turned to me and yelled, "Hey, Goff, can you get into the blog I scored two goals today?"

Done.

Perhaps you already saw that L.A. has traded defender Tyrone Marshall to Toronto for forward Edson Buddle. The Galaxy is also preparing to sign a foreign forward. As I reported yesterday, Carlos Pavon of Honduras is high on their list.

One other note: Silvino Gonzalo, who said he will coach the proposed expansion USL team called Real Maryland FC, tells me that Salvadoran forward Ronald Cerritos (a longtime MLS player who spent time with United) has tentatively agreed to play for the new club starting next year. "It's 99 percent," Gonzalo said.

In case you missed it, here is my Moreno story and notes from today's print edition.

And be sure to check out Mr. Olsen diagramming his goals on "Washington Post Live" on Comcast SportsNet this evening, beginning at 5 p.m.

Also, you'll get a chuckle from this MLS video clip:

Good move for that Real Maryland club landing Cerritos, if true.

So Benny Olsen reads the Insider? Does he read my comments? I'm flattered.

Posted by: G-Unit | June 13, 2007 2:46 PM

Alright for cerritos back in the states. Dc United should give Quintanilla another chance to play with them, since he got injured to me, Quintanilla is the best Salvadorena player at the moment.

Posted by: yo its me | June 13, 2007 2:48 PM

When does Benny come on WashPost live? No offense, but I'd rather skip over the off-season reports on the Redskins, Wizards, and capitals and the in-season reports on the Nationals and Orioles.

Not sure when Olsen is on the show. Sorry...

Posted by: Goff | June 13, 2007 2:57 PM

What a video.

Who else from DCU reads the Insider? I hope The ERP doesn't, just for the sake of his mental health. Or, perhaps all that badmouthing helped him to step it up against the Energy Drinks.

Posted by: bribri | June 13, 2007 2:57 PM

So does Pope become attractice to DCU for defensive cover now that they would not have to carry his salary next season?

And how bad would the RSL defense be without his cleaning up all their mistakes.

They all know I have a blog, but that does not necessarily mean they read it. Soehn and Payne check it regularly to see how many state secrets I have revealed!

Posted by: Goff | June 13, 2007 3:00 PM

Sure. Make fun of the interviewer. Like you've never called your wife "Angelina" or "Halle".

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | June 13, 2007 3:18 PM

Bobby Boswell can't read. He went to Plant high school.

Posted by: Brice | June 13, 2007 3:19 PM

Maybe we need to make the blog bilingual. Vamos a ver...

Posted by: RK | June 13, 2007 3:28 PM

For those of us who won't be able to catch the show tonight, maybe someone can TiVo WPL tonight and post a link to a YouTube clip tomorrow?

OK, so the USMNT has moved up something like 16 spots in the FIFA world rankings . . .

What I wanna know is, how much of this "rankings" stuff is deserved, and how much of it is FIFA's desperation to try any measure to get more U.S. corporate folks interested in soccer?

Posted by: Juan-John | June 13, 2007 3:38 PM

Ah, Eddie Pope to retire after this season (just found it elsewhere). Matt, I had no clue what you were talking about.

Posted by: RK | June 13, 2007 3:38 PM

Been to Venezuela a couple of times... I never got vaccinated or any major diseases. I did however come back with a nasty case of diarhea (sp?) both times.
And as to the rankings... its not deserved, nor is a desperation move by FIFA. Is purely mathematical and our 7-0-1 record so far this year is starting to make up for our poor showing last summer. I didn't know they did it mid-month though. That's kind of weird.

Posted by: Jake | June 13, 2007 3:44 PM

"Is that really necessary for Venezuela?"

Let's just say my arm was a little sore for a few days. Standard Hep A is useful. Yellow fever may be required depending on where one is coming from. In any case, parts of Venezuela (interior) is infected with yellow fever so one would be wise to get a shot. Also, Venezuela now has a requirement that on departure, you're technically supposed to show MMR vaccinations. Caracas had a measles outbreak apparently last year.

Posted by: highbury | June 13, 2007 3:44 PM

As to immunizations, maybe Rabies shots, given Venezuela's rabidly anti-American leader. We wouldn't want our team catching that.

Posted by: seahawkdad | June 13, 2007 3:48 PM

Juan, huh? When FIFA redid the rankings last year, we had a precipitous drop to #32, I believe.

Posted by: RK | June 13, 2007 3:58 PM

now that we here that Pavon is going to La potentially, Guevara has mentioned he wants to go back to the scum, do you think this is a possiblity? Also how many MLS teams are looking at Blas Perez from panama. MVP of the Cucuta team hands down and so far has done pretty good for panama in the gold cup.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 13, 2007 4:05 PM

FSC should fire Jeremy St. Louis.
I mean I could do that job and know Marsch well enough to know which freakin' team he is on.
Good lord.

Posted by: scott47a | June 13, 2007 4:10 PM

LA traded a defender?

For a once-promising forward that now produces little?

Separately, these are foolish. Together, we are talking RSL-level mismanagement. Xavier or no, LA needs better center backs than Veris and Harden if they want to be the great team they keep saying they want to be (or even make the playoffs, what with their awful start to the year).

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | June 13, 2007 4:10 PM

BENNY WINS GOTW. Nice job Insider Nation.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | June 13, 2007 4:42 PM

Wow, that interview almost made me squirm like an awkward moment on the Office.

Goff, Is the readership with this blog too serious to get the BobbyBoswell cereal analysis? Or are you just throwing Steinberg a bone since your readership is bigger, in less time, than his? LOL.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | June 13, 2007 4:42 PM

funny video. I've only caught it a few times, but that the announcer, sullivan is pretty bad.

Ben Olsen's a trip.

BTW, can you get the post insider clips embedded here, too? It would be good advertising...

Posted by: jj | June 13, 2007 5:21 PM

ooops. meant post live clips.

Posted by: jj | June 13, 2007 5:23 PM

I saw that clip on The Offside Rules blog a few days ago, then on AOL's blog yesterday, and here today. I guess there isn't enough material to go around.

Posted by: Duke | June 13, 2007 5:42 PM

Goff, any word from the front office on Junior signing with Hendrick? This is clearly the most important thing in all of sports by the play it's getting on print, TV, and radio.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | June 13, 2007 5:44 PM

They have Cuban doctor in Venezuela

Go to Hospital

Why aren't we getting Ronald? Who currently has his MLS rights? I give him half a season in USL before someone in MLS grabs him.

Posted by: I likes Poland | June 13, 2007 6:19 PM

Cerritos? In MLS again? You're kidding, right?

Posted by: Goff | June 13, 2007 6:41 PM

Isn't this the same guy who played for San Jose and was an MLS allstar back in the day?

Maybe he could play off the bench for Jaime and they could have some kind of tag team so when one passes out the other will be ready.

At a minimum it would probably bring a couple extra Salvadoran fans to the games.

Posted by: Southeasterner | June 13, 2007 7:27 PM

Cerritos had some real nice moments last night but certainly isn't up to playing for an MLS team anymore I don't think.

And Quintanilla? Really? Wow.

Posted by: Todd H. | June 13, 2007 7:47 PM

RE: Cerritos for DC
"At a minimum it would probably bring a couple extra Salvadoran fans to the games"

And when DC trades him it would bring thousands of angry, ticket-buying Salvadorans when we play his new team :-)

Posted by: Go Penn State! | June 13, 2007 8:34 PM

well Carlos Pavon's stock is certainly rising after his first half performance tonight. looks like the Galaxy may have found a gem (then again, it is Cuba).

Posted by: Kurt | June 13, 2007 9:16 PM

make that his second half performance too -- who does this guy think he is, pele?

Posted by: Kurt | June 13, 2007 9:18 PM

Had DC United not already been to Mexico nor Honduras earlier this season they definitely would have needed immunization for all the infectious diseases others have mentioned above--better to have a sore arm than a sore gut. Even tetanus should be up-to-date.
