Marshall Suspended, Pavon Scores 4
The same day Toronto acquired Tyrone Marshall from Los Angeles, the veteran defender was suspended by MLS for three games for his tackle that broke Kenny Cooper's leg last weekend. One-game suspension was automatic for a red card and the league added two more. He was also fined $1,500.
Meantime, Carlos Pavon, the Honduran forward that the Galaxy is hoping to sign, scored four goals by early in the second half Wednesday night in a 5-0 rout of Cuba.

I find Marshall to be a hack. He has some skill, but his challenges are often suspect. The fact that he injured someone is not surprising.

Surprisingly, the tackle was worse than the commentary.

While deserved, the foul is actually less ghastly than I had imagined when I first read about it. (I had a vision of studs up from behind.) Everything I've read about Cooper suggests he's a good teammate and person, so hopefully he has a speedy recovery. Unfortunately for him, any chance he had at Copa America is now gone.

Didn't look at all bad to me. Sure I grew up on the Scottish and English game, but it looked like a yellow card only to me. I clearly think that the injury determined the ban not the challenge itself. Sometimes I think that US refs would rather the game lack any physical contact/challenges.
I like Cooper, sorry his leg broke, but there's no controversy here other than an over zealous disciplinary committee biased by an unfortunate injury.

Yikes, if you turn the volume up you can hear the tibia snap.

I would agree that the tackle, while strong, didn't look that bad initially. Obviously high, late, and wrong, but not clearly malicious.

Galaxy is struggling. As an LAG fan this was a tackle out of frustration. Frustration for losing, frustration for Marshall being blamed for a couple losses, frustration as a team, etc. His built up frustrations were taken out on Cooper. I think Marshall will excel with TFC once he gets in there.

When I first heard about the tackle I thought it was more vicious then what I actually saw. Yes it was high, late and strong, but much like when Dema broke ROB's leg a few years ago he wasn't out to cause harm on purpose. The red was deserved no doubt about but to just read about it, it made it sound much worse.

I agree that it appears the suspension is due, in part, to the severity of the injury. The red card was the right call though. That snapping sound when they make contact is pretty horrific.

Wow. A guy scores 4 goals and no one comments...

4 goals? It was against Cuba, it's so bad they are rationing rum there now.

If the Salcido goal stands up Mexico plays Costa Rica and avoids the US. Concacaf and Univision will be partying tonite!!!!
On another subject -although related- Hugo will have to follow-up on his decision not to exclude (sorry for the double-negative here) naturalized players. The midfield looks absolutely lost without Zinha. Hugo can deflect blame by talking about the fields and the organization, but the bottom line is: his teams so far have fully underperformed snce he took over. Somewhere (in Argentina to be exact) Ricardo Lavolpe is smiling.
Cheers!

Because of yellow cards Mexico will face Costa Rica Sunday without Nery Castillo, Pável Pardo and KikÃn Fonseca. Moreover, Rafa Márquez still won't be available as this is the last week of the Spanish season.
Cheers!

I think Maruffo and his AR got the call right on this one. The tv announcers are speculating that Cooper may have been injured on landing and not from the tackle itself, but it was Cooper's right leg (the one that was kicked) that was broken, and not his left leg (the one that he landed on).
Any time you kick someone hard enough to break their leg, I would say that qualifies as "excessive force" whether you meant to do it or not.

For me, should have been yellow. Rash, but not vicious.

That was some pretty fine finishing by Pavon, even if it was against cuba

I agree with the people saying it should be a yellow, though I can understand the red. It might be at the top end of a yellow, but he didn't really come into him that hard, rather he came through in front of him and kicked back a bit. It was clear he wasn't trying to really injure him. I'm amazed that Cooper's leg broke there.
Still, even if it was a deserved red, a three game suspension for that is crazy. If there is no broken leg, there is no (extra) suspension. It seems like it was just one of those freak things. No way Marshall could have expected that would be the likely result of such a challenge.

For everyone complaining about how bad the filed at RFK looks, take a look at Houston! How is that field so crappy at Relient? The richest country in the world and our stadia have some seriously 3rd world-looking soccer pitches.

The tackle did not look malicious to me; mistimed, hasty, and careless, but not malicious.
Pavon may be playing against some Cuba-like defenses in MLS. With Becks and fingerkisser to serve him, he might score a bunch. Is Pavon French? What's with the announcer's pronunciation? Quiero escuchar señor Cantor.
"The richest country in the world and our stadia have some seriously 3rd world-looking soccer pitches."
Wait until gridiron season. The field will look great when the "real" tenant is playing :-(.

When LAG played Crystal Palace last year down in Richmond, Tyrone Marshall completely cleaned out one of their players. In a friendly. IIRC, it was with a neck-high elbow. He's been a dangerous player for years.
Thx,
Jay!

BAD foul. He had no intention of playing the ball, and no contact with the ball was made. He was clearly taking out the player. High, late, at a bad angle and reckless. Straight Red was the right call, and he should have got a fine and 2 game suspension without the broken leg.
Pavon finished clinically on some dreadful defensive errors. The horrendous defending is more noticeable than good goals. That said, the US doesn't have anyone who scores all 4 when given those opportunities.

4 goals, but against a tired Cuba. One time, in band camp I scored 3 against the Cuban national team. MLS defenses are better than that.

FSC: Stop pronouncing Pavon like he is French!

In the EPL, do you miss more than one game automatically for a straight red? This is my vague sense. I think 3 games should be automatic for a straight red for a violent foul like Marshall's, although I agree with the others that it was not as bad as I thought it would be from reading about it. It's no good in any league, much less one as thin on attacking talent as MLS, to have violent fouls against goal scorers.

Jeeze. Maybe it was against Cuba, but the athleticism and technical skills are amazing. Watch again the second and the fourth goals. The second he skies the ball forward over the defender, keeps going, jumps and flicks the ball into the net with his head. The fourth he, while on the run, taps the ball up to control it and volleys it into the net. All done at full speed.
I hope the Galaxy don't sign him.

Can one of the defenders of Marshall quote me the FIFA rule that says you have to have malicious intent in order to get a straight red card? Ditto for the MLS rule that you have to have malicious intent to get a multi-game suspension? I can see what happened from the video. Why should we have to guess what someone's intent is?

Clearly deserved. Its a shame Marshall is such a blatant hack because he is a skilled player.
