Matchday 12: DCU vs. Colorado
Crisis averted -- thanks to a forklift and an old red dump truck.
It seems the engines that move the third-base grandstands at our beloved Estadio RFK into place on the far sideline for soccer were not working properly this afternoon, so for a while, United feared playing tonight's match with no seats on the east side of the facility and the Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles behind the north goal.
Facility folks moved in the heavy equipment, connected it to the enormous structure and started pulling. For much of the process, the back wheels on the dump truck were spinning and kicking up warning track dirt. (Oh, ow the Nationals are going to love this!) It took a while, but they got it done. Fans were not allowed to enter until an hour before kickoff, 30 minutes later than usual. Now let's see if they're able to slide the section back into place for baseball. Otherwise, it's going to be a mighty short left field porch at which Ryan Zimmerman to take aim.
Okay, as for the match.....
DCU STARTERS:
As expected.....Perkins; McTavish, Simms, Erpen, Gros; Moose, Fred, Carroll, Gomez; Kpene, Emilio.
Namoff (hamstring) is not on the game-day roster. Jeff Carroll, newly signed Mediate and deRoux are among the active reserves, along with Nolly, Addlery, Burch and Dyachenko.
Gomez is wearing the captain's armband.
As usual, share your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts here. I'll be back later with bonus quotes and player ratings. PLEASE, no USA-ARG chatter here. We have a separate forum for the Copa America match.

stuck in a hotel in chicago...watching... what's with the split between SE and BB that I'm seeing - there's a whole empty section between them.

Kpene coming off for Addlery in the tenth minute? This is a bad sign. We need Emilio to step up!

I'm sitting in front of my 'puter, watching Colombia-Paraguay via the Univision site, listening to the proceedings at Estadio RFK via the WMET site, and watching the Weather Channel local radar on a third window. There is a line of storms moving in from the west; there may be some precip at RFK by about halftime, but then again, it may pass to the south.
Posted by: Go Penn State! | June 28, 2007 7:22 PM
for some sillt reason, I can't get the WMET audio to work for me, argh.

Not a great half for United. Peterson causing problems. Colorado finding a lot of space between DC's midfield and back line. With Kpene injured (hamstring strain in 11th minute), Addlery not a good pairing with Emilio. We'll see how the rest of the evening unfolds...

Some particularly bad passing out of the back has really stunted any attacking. Erpen and Simms continually giving the ball away when trying to transition from back to front even without pressure.
Even though United got the penalty call you have to think that Addlery should finish that ball from 12 yards. Frustrating first half, hopefully some attacking movement. Would like to see Fred take on defenders when he gets in the last 20 yards.

Highlighting Simms and Facu as giving it away is unfair to the others who have worked just as hard at giving it away. ;)
Really amazing how poor our passing can be at times.
Game overall looks slow; I'm guessing heat and field conditions?
Posted by: JkR | June 28, 2007 8:07 PM
yuck. DC keeps giving the ball away too carelessly, and the defense has been exposed in transition repeatedly. Will someone tell these guys that they are playing Colorado, at home?

Goal for Addlery!
After seeing him on youtube though, I'm a little bit disappointed in his celebration dance. I expected better.
Posted by: Shatz | June 28, 2007 8:40 PM
Troy Perkins has been great tonight.
Posted by: wsinger | June 28, 2007 8:45 PM
Agreed on Perkins.
Does Fred ever shoot? Or did we not buy that option package? I thought we bought the model that came with shots?
Seriously, how many shots on goal does he have this year?

At game-anyone at home have any idea how bad this weather is??
Posted by: weather? | June 28, 2007 8:56 PM
Looks like it should clear up enough soon to finish off the game.
Posted by: tmc | June 28, 2007 9:01 PM
weather:
looks like thunderstorms all the way to Pittsburgh, but there are a few breaks in there. and the box for severe warnings is about to leave DC proper.
Posted by: northzax | June 28, 2007 9:09 PM
They are about to resume play, and they should be able to get in the last 15 minutes before the next line of severe storms arrives. However, it is thunder and lightning, not rain per se, that causes delays, and the radar maps don't really pinpoint where the thunder and lightning is.
Posted by: Go Penn State! | June 28, 2007 9:19 PM
Well... Some ugly play in the first half, but we came out hard in the second, and really dominated after the weather delay.
You could tell that DCU was missing our leaders out there on defense and in the midfield. Erpen and Simms looked a little bit lost early, which makes me think that Bobby Lightning was the calming influence that was missing. But I think Gomez came out more as a leader in the second half.
Fred had a good game. And I think some of the role players like BC and Moose stood out tonight. Good performance overall. We deserved this win.

Just got home from the game & I'd like to make three observations.
1) Wonderful to see Fred and Adderley get their first goals for us!! Sweet revenge on the Rapids!
2) My faith in the development of B. Carroll & Simms is waning further
3) Tonight was a real black eye for the United fan clubs. The splitting of Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles into two separately chanting groups was an embarassment. On national TV no less. I sat it the middle hoping some grownups would step up and thanks to the guy with the shaggy hair (sorry, I don't know your name) the situation was rectified at half time. I saw some of it taking place but I don't have all the facts so I won't point any fingers. Frankly, it doesn't particularly matter who's right or wrong. You find a way around the issue and you do what's best for the team. Remember, it's
U N I T E D

Why was Simms playing central defense at the beginning of the game???? Once they got McTavish in the center things got better.
Perkins had a pretty good game tonight. His kicking distribution still needs a lot of work but some great timely, fearless saves.
Colorado really petered out. Why the heck did they take Pablo out? He was all over Gomez and keeping him pretty well in check. After he left we scored 3 goals.
Why do the ESPN idiots insist on showing the goal Troy gave up against Chivas over and over again? That is ancient history at this point.
Why no caution for the guy who handled the ball to set up the PK?
Will our stadium announcer ever learn how to pronounce Kpene's first name or Addlery's last name?

Some of the passing by Carroll and Simms was downright U-14 level tonight. Missed the remaining rain delayed 15 minutes to catch the USMNT on GolTV (someone please shoot Hudson) and now regret that decision. I miss Fred and Emilo goals and then watch the US fall apart in the second 45. (I will put remaining comments on that thread).

Was at the game...didn't see any reason for the PK. Addlery had a great game -- played 80 solid minutes.
Gomez took a while to assert himself, just like Fred. Couldn't believe Emilio got a goal -- he didn't do much all game. Great save by Perkins in the second half before the lightning delay!
Posted by: Bill in Md. | June 28, 2007 11:00 PM
when you see replays of the reason for the PK, you'll understand. blatant handball in the box
Posted by: antonio | June 28, 2007 11:07 PM
Ok, so Fred now has one shot and one goal!

Well, because BB and SE "leaders" can't get along, everyone in BB had to be inconvenienced tonight. Mostly because of the BB leaders.
Pull your things out and measure them in the parking lot.
95% of the supporters in BB could give a darn about whatever feud was going on.
And if it happens again, I'm sure some of us will be going to the front office to have our season tickets moved.
Solve your petty differences outside the stadium. Don't make us all look like jerks.
Posted by: 135ForLife | June 29, 2007 12:24 AM
Wow, you were inconvenienced by moving ten feet to the left? Maybe you should get all the facts straight before you go spouting off.
Posted by: Dirty Harry | June 29, 2007 7:57 AM
OK - so something is going on between SE and BB? Gimme a break! You take yourselves too seriously if that is the case. Seriously, the sea of orange in between the two groups was so conspicuous...with the opening shots of that area, I thought I was watching an RBNY match.
Addlery's goal was nice (from perfect service by Fred on a corner) - maybe I'll suspend my disdain for Addlery for the moment. He wasn't quite so lost last night.
Posted by: DE | June 29, 2007 8:26 AM
Dirty Harry, or any other BB lurkers, will you care to enlighten us as to what the facts are? Please, straighten us out, by all means. BB definitely created a hostile atmosphere by moving over and yelling at anyone moving into 135. There were also a few BB guys who were outright taunting SE. I don't know what started it, but it's pretty damn stupid. And let's not forget, it wasn't supporting DC United, which is what we're all there for.
Posted by: BS | June 29, 2007 9:41 AM
BS, I realize you might be peeved at the moment, but referring to any members of BB participating in this forum as lurkers...? Now you're doing the taunting you accused a few of them of.
Kind of the pot calling the kettle black there, you know.
Posted by: Kire | June 29, 2007 10:19 AM
A lurker is a person who reads a blog or other type of internet forum, but doesn't comment. It's not a pejorative. BS was inviting any BB people who are reading this, but haven't commented, to explain their view of the situation.

I stand corrected. I tend to think of lurkers in the pejorative, but you're right, that's not necessarily the case. My bad. Sorry, BS.
