U-20s on the U

The ESPN family, which holds the English-language U.S. TV rights to all FIFA events, has decided to show the entire Under-20 World Cup in Canada this summer -- but you might have to work a bit to find it. Expect an official announcement this week.

Every U.S. first-round match -- as well as several other group games, all the second-round matches, quarterfinals, semifinals and championship -- will be shown on ESPNU, the two-year-old outlet devoted to college sports. The other matches will be available on ESPN360.com, a broadband service. ESPN2 will replay the July 22 championship game from Toronto on tape delay that night.

The U.S. group schedule on ESPNU:
June 30 vs. South Korea from Montreal, 4:45 p.m. live
July 3 vs. Poland from Montreal, 4:45 p.m. live
July 6 vs. Brazil from Ottawa, 7:30 p.m. live

ESPNU is available in only 10 million households (ESPN 94.3 million, ESPN2 93.9, ESPN Classic 65, ESPNews 58.7). Home satellite subscribers should have access, as well.

If anyone knows specifics of Spanish-language TV coverage, please share it here! I believe Univision has the rights.

Hmmmm I thought the U stood for University, not Under. Nevertheless, it's a positive sign that ESPN is programming more soccer.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | June 11, 2007 4:48 PM

For those of you with the Verizon Cable sports package (which includes Gol TV), ESPN U is right there.

Here's a random question... I saw that West Ham's Nigel Reo-Coker is the captain of England's U-21 squad. No problem, right? Wrong! The guy is 23 years old! (DOB: May 14, 1984) How is it that he's eligible to play for their U-21s?

Posted by: James | June 11, 2007 5:01 PM

It would be nice if they would broadcast all games on espn360.com (in addition to ESPNU) so us plebes could watch it.

Posted by: Shatz | June 11, 2007 5:04 PM

Although I don't get it, that's fantastic news. I loved watching some of the youth teams while living in Europe on Eurosport...

James, could that be their "Olympic" team? Olympic teams were allowed to field a few older players.

Posted by: RK | June 11, 2007 5:06 PM

You were probably looking at an outdated page. England isn't in this tournament.

Posted by: Dave Lifton | June 11, 2007 5:07 PM

RK, England do not participate in the Olympic soccer tournament because it would have to be a unified United Kingdom team.

Posted by: Dave Lifton | June 11, 2007 5:09 PM

I'm curious why the American team isn't playing any first round matches in Toronto...

Posted by: AlecW81 | June 11, 2007 5:19 PM

Dave, I actually wasn't looking at anything for this tournament... England's U-21's played Slovakia and then the Czechs in the European U-21 championships.

I'm really curious as to how players over 21 can play for the U-21 team. Anyone else have any idea?

Posted by: James | June 11, 2007 5:29 PM

Why would you expect them to play in Toronto? Because there's an MLS team there?

It was a random draw.

Posted by: Goff | June 11, 2007 5:30 PM

ESPNU: MoCo subscribers to the FIOS premium plan (the step above local channels only) get ESPNU automaticamente.

James: Are you taking about the England v Slovakia U-21 match last week? Reo-Coker was definitely on the pitch. It was a friendly, so maybe they allowed O-21's.

I-270,
I am referring to that Slovakia game last week, but then Reo-Coker wore the captain's armband in Saturday's Euro U-21 game against the Czech Republic (not a friendly). I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this curious. Goff, do you have any insight here?

Actually not quite a random draw ... Toronto requested to have Portugal play in TO due to the large Portuguese population (request ws granted). I beleive that cbc here in canada may stream the games on their website. If so, you will need to access "from Canada". Can use freeproxy.ca if this is the case.

Posted by: TFC Fan | June 11, 2007 6:38 PM

If you're under under 21 at the start of the tournament you're apparently eligible for the duration. Anyone born after 1/1/1984 is eligible.

Sweet news.

Hopefully this reproduces correctly. It's the entire month's TV schedule (our PorTV section)
I couldn't send the .pdf file.
Cheers!

Hey Guys, about Nigel Reo Coker. They base your age for when qualifying starts, its a stupid rule, I know. But when the qualification process began he was U-21.

Posted by: Dan, Hammer and Red Bull fan! | June 12, 2007 12:43 AM

First of all, Roberto Abramowitz is almost as great a name as Boris Flores. Second, nice work on the tv sched! You're a dedicated goy!

Posted by: Grotus | June 12, 2007 7:14 AM

Indeed, thanks for the Galavision details!

Posted by: Goff | June 12, 2007 7:41 AM

My pleasure... Here's another little nuggett. In an interview with ESPN Deportes this weekend Justino Compeán (Mex Fed President) revealed that the US would play Mexico at Estadio Azteca on September 9th.
He also mentioned that the Federations were working on it being an annual event.
Cheers!
Roberto.

All this Reo-Coker stuff raises the question: why did UEFA schedule their U-21+ tournament at the same time as the FIFA U-20 WC?

Y gracias Roberto

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | June 12, 2007 9:06 AM

Hey guys, thanks for the info about Reo-Coker and the U-21 eligibility rules.
You know what's scary? Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney, and Leo Messi would all be eligible to play in such competitions. Could you imagine what guys like that would do against U-21 competition?
