Matchday 16: DCU at RBNY

[FOR THE RECORD, THIS THREAD WAS CREATED AT THE TIME LISTED AND UPDATED WITH LINEUPS AND TEAM INFO AT APPROXIMATELY 4:05 P.M.)

Things that make the car ride from D.C. to the Meadowlands tolerable:

*Prius's 52 mpg
*XM Radio's The Loft
*Smart Tag/EZ Pass
*James Fenimore Cooper's rest area

So United embarks on the second half of its league schedule today against a New York club that has slipped since its impressive start. No Moreno, Olsen or Angel, but lots of artificial turf.

With SuperLiga starting this week, it should be noted that United has entered into talks with FedEx Field to host a semifinal Aug. 14 or 15 against L.A., Dallas, Chivas or Pachuca. The first hurdle is United advancing out of group play. The second hurdle is United being awarded hosting rights for that match. Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards has also expressed interest. RFK is not available because of a Nationals home series.

UNITED'S LINEUP
It's going to be a 4-5-1 of sorts......

Perkins
McTavish Boswell Vanney Burch
Fred Simms Carroll Gomez Gros
Emilio

Subs: Nolly, Mediate, deRoux, J. Carroll, Dyachenko, Addlery

United brought only 17 players instead of the usual 18 for a road match. North was scratched from the trip because of a hamstring injury and Arguez was left at home. No official explanation, other than coach's decision.

The Loft? C'mon Goff, the 2 best stations on XM are Lucy and Ethel (90's Rock/Alternative and Modern Rock/Alternative respectively)

Posted by: AlecW81 | July 22, 2007 3:27 PM

Might as well get used to playing at FedEx...

Posted by: EdTheRed | July 22, 2007 3:37 PM

AlceW81. My thoughts exactly: The Loft? I am mosty stuck on FRED and 80s on 8. Love Lucy, too.

Go United. And safe travels home, Goff.

FedEx? Beats Camden, I guess.

Is there a reason we never hear discussion of Byrd Stadium in College Park?

Posted by: JoshC | July 22, 2007 3:45 PM

what's the deal with all the hamstring injuries?

Posted by: Glenn | July 22, 2007 4:20 PM

I believe Byrd wouldn't work due to the pitch being too narrow. It would be worse even than Houston Dynamo's Robertson Stadium set up - which makes for an ugly and clogged game, but I guess is slightly wider than Byrd.

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 4:21 PM

Length of the pitch is supposed to be 110-120 yards with 70-80 yards for the width.

Obviously the length isn't a problem, but the college football field is only 160 feet (53 and 1/3 yards). Having been to quite a few UMD football games over the years - there is not 17 yards of extra width to be had to put a proper pitch onto Byrd Stadium, especially in the closed end. There is only a couple of extra yards of turf on either end before the stands down there.

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 4:28 PM

I meant the width of the college football field is only 160 feet. Left that out.

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 4:29 PM

Byrd Stadium's field is narrow with a raised median (typical of a lot of college football fields). Also, it's fast.

With the way MD Soccer draws, I wouldn't be surprised to see a permanent expansion of Ludwig Field in 5-7 years time.

FWIW, Blanco just burned a Celtic defender and Boruc and scored. Whooooooooooaaaaa.

Posted by: Jonathan | July 22, 2007 4:39 PM

Blanco scores......gggggooooaaaaallll!!!!

I hate him for his actions against the 06 world cup team, but he draws people.

rob stone butchered his name again this week. IDIOT

Does anybody that has Verizon Fios television know what the HD channel is for Comcast? I hate watching DC Games in non HD.

This will be the first game i get to see with Vanney in a DC uniform.

How 'bout Boswell almost hitting the bike goal after heading after the bar?

DCU needs to go harder to the ball and keep pushing. Hopefully they can equalize before the half.

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 5:45 PM

Could someone please tell Vanney to stop talking DC's free kicks and corners. He hasn't even remotely hit a decent ball yet. Let Gomez take them!

Posted by: G-Dub | July 22, 2007 5:46 PM

That reminds me. Will the Superliga matches be on WMET? That's my only way to get ahold of DC United at this point.

Posted by: Colm | July 22, 2007 5:47 PM

G-Dub: David Beckham will actually be taking all free kicks and corners for the entire league as a result of a new collective bargaining agreement. The only ammendment was that Landycakes be allowed to take LA's PKs, but can only kiss 7 of his 10 knuckles.

try 511 on verizon.

Mucho gracias m.

Burch has been impressive. Vanney, not so much. Gros looks back to his usual self in the midfield.

But the 4-5-1 doesn't seem to be working out too well. I'm thinking Addlery for Simms early in the second half.

Posted by: Shatz | July 22, 2007 6:03 PM

Well, what is working with Vanney?
Why not take Vanney out and put Dyachenko or Mediate as a midfielder
and later take out carrol for adderley
and then fire soehn and trade vanney

Posted by: Garret | July 22, 2007 6:07 PM

Another HUGE crowd at the swamp.

Posted by: Hoost | July 22, 2007 6:18 PM

Addlery you need to bury that son. DCU is good for at least one goal in this game. RBNY is going into a shell ...

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 6:21 PM

I am losing patience with Addlery. For a big guy he gets pushed around a lot. He complains a lot. That's about all.

On the other hand, Altidore has impressed as a strong, effective forward.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 22, 2007 6:55 PM

I'm watching the game on Telefutura, but don't speak Spanish yet... I thought I heard that Boca Juniors was considering opening up an MLS franchise (a la Chivas USA) and that they were interested in either Miami or New York. Did anyone catch what else was said or know anything else about it?

Posted by: 5280 | July 22, 2007 6:56 PM

Well that was frustrating ...

Harsh red on Fred there at the end. Hopefully Moreno will be healthy by the time the next MLS game comes around, otherwise DCU is sorely lacking in attacking players.

Posted by: tmc | July 22, 2007 6:59 PM

I hope Vaney is going to an adjustment period. Because if this is what we got for Erpen, well someone got robbed.

Posted by: Bart | July 22, 2007 7:09 PM

Welcome to 5th place.

Posted by: A Rickey | July 22, 2007 7:18 PM

Not a very good performance. DCU looks as if they are still in preseason. It is just not good enough right now.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 22, 2007 7:19 PM

Trading for Vanney was a pure waste. I have not seen him hit one good free kick or corner kick yet. Let Christian take the kicks you idiot!!

Very disappointing game. Too many missed chances. They had the opportunities and just could not pull the trigger. I think Tommy goes into the hot seat.

Posted by: DCU 4EVER | July 22, 2007 7:22 PM

I think we are seeing how good Tom Soehn is. He seems tactically inept.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 22, 2007 7:34 PM

Our defense stinks, Vanney, Addlery, and Caroll are worthless, and our depth sucks. Besides that, we're in great shape.

Posted by: DC United Fan | July 22, 2007 7:59 PM

I'm going to ignore the game, but notice that you're trying to simultaneously move in on Warren Brown, Paul Fahri, and Dr. Gridlock's turf with your introduction.

Posted by: Kim | July 22, 2007 9:10 PM

After 10 years of travel soccer, my daughter is considering NOT playing college soccer unless she can get "Beckham money." Great...

Posted by: Frederick, MD | July 22, 2007 9:20 PM

Facundo scored the equalizer for the Rapids draw at KC...can this Vanney trade look any better, lol?

Posted by: DCUfanSE | July 22, 2007 10:05 PM

Ummm...

Colorado still hasn't actually won a game yet since that trade, but if minor things like actually winning games and taking 3 points from your last 9 league games means you get the better end of a defender for defender trade, so be it.

Posted by: A Rickey | July 22, 2007 10:11 PM

i don't know who was worse: gros, carroll or vanney.

if addlery had played a whole game he would be up there too.

stupid, stupid foul by fred after he had already gotten into it with richards a minute earlier. his retaliation is going to be really costly when this team is already decimated by injuries.

"Colorado still hasn't actually won a game yet since that trade, but if minor things like actually winning games and taking 3 points from your last 9 league games means you get the better end of a defender for defender trade, so be it."

Let's examine this statement a bit: Of those 9 games mentioned, Erpen has been on the CO roster for 4 of them, have played 90 minutes in all of them and resulting in 2 ties, 2 losses, and 3 CO goals conceded. In the previous 5 games, they had 5 losses and 11 goals conceded. So while the Rapids have been terrible of late, it's a bit disingenuous to blame it on Erpen.

For what it is worth, I think Erpen has played fairly well for the Rapids thus far. He hasn't had too many kung fu kicks or bad giveaways, and though the Rapids still aren't getting results, I do think they look better defensively since the trade.

Posted by: 5280 | July 22, 2007 10:34 PM

not sure how this is Soehn's fault. between the injuries and Ben's suspension there was pretty slim pickins as far as selections. Did he miss Gomez's sitter? Did he make Addlery shoot the ball right at the GK?

Fred has to keep himself under control but that was a BS red card. I suppose we expect terrible calls from the worst ref in the league though.

Addlery is a complete waste of a roster spot. Carroll had a bad first half but I thought he was better in the second. I don't get Vanney taking all the set pieces either. With Gomez touching the ball so little in the run of play it seems like the set plays are his big chance to make a difference in the match.

we're not very good right now, but hopefully once guys get healthy they can go on another unbeaten streak. it's a long season.

Posted by: Glenn | July 22, 2007 10:36 PM

oops: CO has 3 ties, 1 loss since the trade. My general point still stands though. Erpen is doing fine in Colorado.

Posted by: 5280 | July 22, 2007 10:46 PM

Soehn is not capable of coaching a high school team... he really sucks!!!!!! if the front office of dc united reads this please get someone else. Ritchie Williams could do a better job. I bet he would come to coach the team

Posted by: koolcaio | July 22, 2007 11:25 PM

You guys need to cool it on Soehn.

As Glenn already pointed out, he can't shoot for these guys, can't replace Jaime's hamstring or take away Ben's yellows.

He had few bench options. Remember the bench just lost to a 3rd division squad in the Open Cup!! Even still, we could have won the game given our chances.

In the meantime, focus on the positive:

Burch looks good and should get plenty of pt. Gros looks much better in midfield than defense. We still haven't signed a DP!!

The second half of the season is simply playoff positioning and then a quick run. We just need to hit our stride.

Posted by: delantero | July 23, 2007 1:55 AM

My new line up:

Emilio, Jaime/Fred
Gros Gomez/Fred, Carroll, Olsen
Burch, Boz, Vanney, Namoff
Perkins

Fred still wants to play center mid like he did in the A league, and IMO is fully capable of that. He's just not outside player even though he's shown flashes.

Posted by: d | July 23, 2007 2:00 AM

Vanney should have given away a penalty kick... I'm just saying...

Posted by: RB | July 23, 2007 2:08 AM

Hey d - what would your lineup look like if Jaime is playing? You're not saying you'd sit either Fred or Gomito, are you?!

Plus, if you're assuming Namoff is back, why not move McTavish to the middle to pair with Boswell? Vanney is awful and McTavish has played will with the starting XI.
