Moreno Is Back
Sort of.
Coach Tom Soehn said this morning that team captain Jaime Moreno will travel with the club today to Houston for Wednesday's crucial SuperLiga match against the Dynamo.
Will he start? I doubt it.
Will he play? If the circumstances allow it. Soehn was able to get a few minutes for the recovering Kpene and Namoff on Sunday against Club America and I am sure he would like to do the same for Moreno.
What this does mean is that Moreno should be available for significant minutes this weekend at New England and perhaps start against Los Angeles next Thursday.
Also on the injury front, Kpene and Namoff participated in full workouts this morning and will make the trip. My guess is that, considering the quality of United's play Sunday, Soehn will go with the same starting lineup at Houston. There is, however, a question of fatigue considering this will be United's (and Houston's) third game in eight days and United will have to play on the road again this weekend.
Meantime.....
*Greg Vanney (ankle) jogged around the training grounds and will not be available Wednesday.
*Bobby Boswell opened up on his Web site . The segment is titled, "I'm Back."
*And this evening on Comcast SportsNet's "Washington Post Live," I will talk about United and other soccer matters via remote from the Post newsroom. The show runs from 5 until 6:30 and replays at 8:30. My slot is tentatively scheduled to begin around 5:20. It is also available through streaming video at washingtonpost.com's sports page.

FIRST!
I will admit, I do think Bobwell is back.
I found his part inthe CA game entertaining.

Great to see that Bobby is mentally back. sometimes when things happen so quickly and rapidly, it's hard to keep your footing. Hopefully he's regained his mental edge, because he and Carroll will be major cogs over the stretch run of the season.

Sounds like he got some tough love from Olsen and Gomez.
that's what real friends are for.

It was good, albeit a bi weird, to see Boswell making runs deep into America's box during the last game. Also fun to see the look on his face as he tried to hustle back and regain position afterwards. I do enjoy it when we F with other teams by throwing guys like Boswell into the attack now and then.
Maybe Burch can launch one from the wing onto Boswell's noggin....
Who needs Emilio and Addlery and those guys? :)

I am looking forward to seeing the Boz clip.
But to clarify a post last week, this news on Moreno, Namoff and Kpene definitely qualifies as "good news."
Thanks Goff!

Adu and Benfica are in the process of finalizing the deal. Freddy is expected back in the U.S. tomorrow.

Goff,
Any update on the transfer front? Do we know if Payne made a follow up offer to the "mystery" Argentine?
Posted by: wmsiii | July 31, 2007 12:36 PM
Goff:
Any chance Vanney will find himself on the bench once he's healed? McIntosh and Burch are playing for their starting positions and personally, I can't see removing either one of them for Vanney, considering what he's brought to DCU so far. I'm not generally knocking Vanney, but these young guys may be the future of our back line.

No word on the Argentine pursuit.
Good question about Vanney: If McTavish and Burch continue to play well, it's hard to see them being benched. Namoff is also on the way back to full health. Keep in mind, though, United's busy schedule could begin to dictate the lineup. I could see Soehn giving guys a break in order to avoid late-season fatigue. We'll see...

Does anyone know if the DC-HOU match will be available through dcunited.com like the other two games?

According to the AP, MLS gets $2 million and "Besides the transfer fee, MLS is in position to gain a percentage of any future transfer of Adu from Benfica to another club, Gazidis said."

What does the Adu transfer mean for United (if anything) in terms of allocation slots/money? I swear MLS makes up these allocation rules as they go along...

Bye-Bye freddy

Too bad I hate Benfica's kits; otherwise, I might buy an Adu jersey...

As someone who supported Freddy from the beginning but was also critical of him at various points during his stint with United, I'm actually very glad to see him in the Benfica kit, running with his new teammates.
Before he was with United or RSL, he was a Maryland resident, a local kid. I try to root for locals who make it to the big time (save for certain teams - Redbulls, Galaxy, Spurz, Cowboys), so cheers to Freddy. I hope you like seafood. Or at the least linguica.

Ever since Jaime went down in the Dallas game with United up 3-0 did we really see his impact on this team. Without him the team stuggles to hold and distribute up front. It sure will be nice to have that added dimension back.

Can you confirm that Adu has signed (as reported by Yanks-Abroad) and what it means for DC?
