Now Where Were We?
After four days in the State of Granite with no TV (ahhh!) and limited access to the funny Internet machine, I have returned to the maelstrom of football.
Some things I am hearing and some things I wish I did not:
*MLS wants $7.5 million for Freddy Adu's rights. Benfica is a player, but that fee might be too high for them and others.
*Michael Ballack wants to play for the Galaxy (who doesn't these days?) ..... but not until after the 2010 World Cup.
*Chicago wanted Osorio so badly, they helped arrange an agent for him before they even fired Sarachan.
*New York has no intention of re-signing van den Bergh and Schopp after this season and will ask Kovalenko ($197,000) to take a significant pay cut to remain with the club.
*You've all probably read about these already: Yallop in serious trouble, Okocha in negotiations with MLS, Denilson could end up in Dallas, the Earthquakes are back in San Jose and all-stars in Toronto next summer.
*Chivas USA was bounced from the Open Cup by Seattle last night, leaving only three MLS teams at the quarterfinal stage. Good for the smaller clubs, but until the USSF and MLS better coordinate their schedules, it's going to be hard to convince the big teams to field full-strength lineups.
*And finally, I did catch a few minutes of the All-Star Game on BSPN2 last night. Yes, BSPN -- Beckham Soccer Programming Network. (The 'BS' could also stand for other things.) During its shameless 2 1/2-hour promotion and cheerleading of Beckham (Only 46 more hours until his MLS debut in a friendly against yet another Euro club out of season!! Only 400 days until his MLS retirement!! There's Becks with Gulati and Anschutz!!), the network managed to show a match. Not a very good one at that, with an ecclectic mix of MLS players facing an out-of-shape European "power". Hardly a gauge of American soccer or Celtic. At least we were told at the bottom of the screen that BSPN's sources were saying that the gimpy Beckham would play Saturday, but then at halftime, Beckham indicated in an exclusive BSPN on-air interview that it did not look very promising. Which is it, lads?
That's all for now. I will return this afternoon with United news from Estadio RFK.
