Media Matters
My profile of U.S. women's star Abby Wambach was supposed to run in today's editions, but alas, Michael Vick's plea bumped it out of the paper. The story will hopefully appear soon, but in the meantime, you can get to know Abby during a washingtonpost.com live online chat at 1 p.m. today. Submit your questions here and join the conversation this afternoon.
I will be live online to answer your DCU/MLS/USA questions Wednesday at 1 p.m. Submit questions here.
You can also catch me on Comcast SportsNet's "Washington Post Live" today around 5:20 p.m. The show replays at 8:30 p.m.
I'll be back later with United news. For now, enjoy Fabinho's goal nine seconds into Brazil's 7-0 victory over New Zealand at the U-17 World Cup:

Are we on a first-name basis with Goff now? Can we really call you Steve?
Posted by: Arrrlington | August 21, 2007 9:48 AM
@Arrrlington: I don't think so, I-270 may have just slip. I'm pretty sure we're still only allowed to refer to Goff as, "Captain, my Captain," "Sire," or "His Royal Majesty."

I'm looking forward to the Wambach story (whenever it runs), but why not publish the it on .com? Isn't that part of the purpose of e-newspapers, to present stories that don't fit into the dead tree edition?
-------
Broader feature stories run online the same day they run in the paper, whenever that might be.
Web-only material are blogs, notebooks, web-contracted columns (Feinstein, Shapiro), etc.

"Broader feature stories run online the same day they run in the paper,"
[Sigh] If only NFL players would stay out of of trouble there'd be more room for soccer stories.

The MLS should capitalize on all the negative press surrounding the NFL, NBA, and the MLB and present itself as a clean but competitive league of athletes who, like our Benny, can be legitimate role models for youths in this country.
There are some, not a lot, of disullioned sports fans in this country who might be refreshed by the purity of soccer in this country.

Mr. Goff (as he should properly be addressed)
You should consider hosting a lecture/discussion on soccer in dc. Given the popularity of this blog it is clear that people woulod show up. Maybe invite soehn or a couple dcu players. Charge 5 bucks at the door and give it to a local charity. It would work and be fun.

Maybe if Wambach killed some dogs with her bare hands, or someone got shot in her house, womens soccer would get some publicity. . . . .
Serious downside is the print profile would have generated a ton of more questions, especially from young players. If you care and are connected to any youth teams I'd suggest giving them a heads-up this morning by e-mail.

Now it all comes to light, the whole Vick thing is part of the NFL conspiracy to squash soccer and deny soccer news to the good citizens and consumers of our nation. It's obvious that they were lining this up for the past few months to squash any pre-Women's World Cup news/hype.

Vick hates soccer.

Who is this Vick? Is he the vapor rub guy? What did he do?

"There are some, not a lot, of disullioned sports fans in this country who might be refreshed by the purity of soccer in this country."
It would only be in this country, because soccer is the "ghetto" sport for the rest of the world. As it is, that upper middle class white bread aura around soccer is on its way out the door, and that is all for the better of the game here.
With the women's game that is much less the case. It's still very upper-middle-class white-bread-with-the-crust-cut-off there.

A bit OT, but your VCR/Tivo/whatever may be interested in knowing that the next U-17 match, against Tunisia, will be carried by ESPN2 as well as ESPNU in the pre-dawn hours Thursday (0345 hours EDT). Go to http://www.soccertv.com/espn.cfm for details.

Leesburg I would differ a bit -- I think between the MNT roster for Sweden and the WNT roster for WWC, the women show more variety than the men. Natasha Kai surely is no Mia Hamm, and Nike signed her as one of a very few women players even before she was named to the WWC roster. (Did that mean Ryan had to pick her?)
Both boys and girls youth scene may still be tilted toward the stone-ground wheat bread set (the upper middle class soccer mom does not pack white bread), but on the girls side I see plenty of African-American, Hispanic, Asian and not-upper-middle-class participation and it's growing. As you say, all to the good.

Little known fact: Abby Wambach has killed dogs with her bare hands. At least that's what it looks like when she plays.

What's with the Brazilian U17s and that EPL-style long ball over the top? Traditionalists in Sao Paulo are howling!

You can add a slideshow and call it an "Online Extra" to make us think that it's a special presentation :-)
BTW Steve. On the Sports home page, in the Sports Live Discussions frame, you're listed as chatting today (Tuesday) at 1PM. The link, however, is for Wednesday's chat.
