About Chivas and the Copa Sudamericana

I can't tell if people in the threadprevious were serious about not knowing about tomorrow's match, or were mocking The Post for not having covered it yet. Regardless, here are a few details.

The Copa Nissan Sudamericana is a South American club tournament run by CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation. In 2005, the event expanded to include CONCACAF teams, according to DCU. This is United's second appearance; in that year, United lost to Universidad Católica of Chile in the Round of 16, 4-3 aggregate. Yes, "Nissan" is as in the car maker. No other MLS team has participated.

DCU will face Chivas in a home-and-home aggregate series as part of the Round of 16, starting tomorrow at home at 8:30 (Fox Sports en Español). The good news for TV viewers is that the wire holding up the baseball backstop at RFK has already been taken down. So have most of the sponsorship banners in left and center field (behind the "Loud Side" for soccer configurations).

There were 34 teams invited (see the full list here, including the reason each team was invited), which obviously means there were some earlier elimination stages, but DCU advanced straight to the Round of 16. The club was invited based on its third place finish in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. The event's defending champion is Mexico's Pachuca, which defeated Chile's Colo Colo. The 2005 champ was Boca Juniors, which defeated Pumas in the final.

The winner of DCU-Chivas winner is scheduled to face the winner of Brazil's Goias EC and Argentina's Arsenal in mid-to-late October. Arsenal leads 3-2 after winning in Brazil; the second leg will be played in Argentina tomorrow. United-Chivas is the last Round of 16 series to begin. The final (also a home-and-home) is scheduled for late November/early December. The full schedule is here (PDF file).

The event's home page is right here, but it's all in Spanish. Whether because of the media's preoccupation with easy storylines or actual facts, the focus of my interviews was the renewal of the rivalry with Chivas, which defeated DCU 3-2 aggregate in March's Concacaf Champions' Cup semifinals. If any of the above is incorrect or incomplete, feel free to add additional information below.

If DC can advance and Arsenal can hold serve at home, Gomez will get to face a former club of his in the quarterfinals.

Other than that, I'd be really surprised if people seriously didn't know about this game. It could be a case of just forgetting, since our participation was clinched by being 3rd in the CONCACAF Cup several months ago.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've had tomorrow marked on my calendar since the game was announced.

On a related note, any word on how advance ticket sales are going, Dan? (It's Special Event C for season ticket holder, so that's a good chunk of tickets sold right there.)

Posted by: EdTheRed | September 25, 2007 1:14 PM

Club anticipates crowd of 18-20k for tomorrow night. Saturday night should be in the mid-to-high 20s.

Posted by: Dan Steinberg | September 25, 2007 1:17 PM

There's a game tomorrow?

Posted by: sitruc | September 25, 2007 1:20 PM

Anyone know if tickets will be sold at the gate?

Posted by: Tickets? | September 25, 2007 1:22 PM

I thought RFK was closed.

Posted by: Kim | September 25, 2007 1:34 PM

Amazing opportunity for DCU. And the weather will be perfect.

Posted by: FC | September 25, 2007 1:35 PM

DCU front office told me its either TicketMaster or walk up purchase at the stadium for individual purchase.

Posted by: sbg | September 25, 2007 1:36 PM

Yeah does anyone know if tickets will be sold at the gate? I really don't want to pay $13 to TicketMaster in convenience fees just for pleasure of them taking my money.

Posted by: Bart | September 25, 2007 1:37 PM

it really has been under the radar in DC, sadly. Sure, regulars here and at Estadio RFK know about it, but the PR has been, frankly, awful. I know, it got lost in the tragedy of the pointy-ballers losing to the Gmen, and the "closing" of RFK, but it would be nice to see some press for our own United playing in a serious international competition, it's not even on the front page of MLSnet.com. These are the games that increase MLS' profile overseas, if we can beat Chivas (we can, but if we do) and can get a home and home with a legitimate SA club like Arsenal, it's not only a good thing for DCU, it's a good thing for MLS, in that increases the profile and acceptability of the entire league outside the US. A poor crowd showing on a night like this, when the game will be at least highlighted on the sport in Latin America, only hurts the chances of the next Luciano Emilio signing onto MLS.

Posted by: northzax | September 25, 2007 1:46 PM

Guess am gonna take my chances at the gate. Just don't see why TicketMaster should charge so much in convenience fees. Over 20% in fees on a $25 ticket.

BTW, stubhub doesn't have tickets for tomorrow's match.

Posted by: Bart | September 25, 2007 1:46 PM

Bart - if you want to go stand and sing and otherwise support United, check the sites for the various supporters clubs - they all sell tix w/ no service charges:

Do NOT do this if you want to a) sit or b) cheer for Chivas. Seriously.

Posted by: EdTheRed | September 25, 2007 1:55 PM

Posted by: jp | September 25, 2007 2:14 PM

And, as I noted in the other thread the match will also be shown on "tape" delay at 11:30PM on FSC according to the promo last night during the Soccer Report.

Posted by: Glenn | September 25, 2007 2:19 PM

Chivas al carbon! Chivas al carbon! Vamos United! Let's roast some goats.

Posted by: T. Henry | September 25, 2007 2:27 PM

They play soccer at RFK?

Posted by: Max | September 25, 2007 2:28 PM

I was absolutely serious about not knowing about the game. I'm not in DC, and whatever I find out about soccer is usually through my own research.

I knew -of- the competition, but frankly, since they've had two other international tournaments, I forgot about this one.

Seems to me that there was more chatter about other tournaments than this one, despite this one being IMO the second-most important. However, with DC being in-form, they should be able to make up for the Concacaf Confed Cup.

Posted by: RK | September 25, 2007 2:28 PM

This is rediculous. I follow DC United as best I can from Puerto Rico and I JUST FOUND OUT about this match by coming here to this blog. People need to wake up and get jiggy with it, there is a game to be won. I hope we can spank Chivas this time around. The team has been playing FANTASTIC lately.

Posted by: Felix | September 25, 2007 2:30 PM

Asemos algunos Chivas.

Posted by: T. Henry | September 25, 2007 2:31 PM

the only consolation about not being able to make it down from brooklyn for a weeknight game is at least i get Fox Sports en Espanol. i am very glad to hear they'll be showing it!

Will the familiar voice of Tony Limarzi be heard on WMET? Will there be any Internet audio or video transmission?

Posted by: Section 410 | September 25, 2007 2:55 PM

I believe duing the Chicago broadcast, Limarzi announced that he would be covering the Chivas (Wed) game for online broadcast and that the next radio broadcast would be the Toronto (Saturday) game.

Thanks! Will Limarzi's voice be coming through the DCU site? (Presumably the WMET site will be simulcasting their normal Wednesday evening radio fare.) If so, the DCU site should be mentioning it, which it doesn't.

I have been waiting for this game for a while...I don't think Americans who like soccer (or columnists - not only you Goff) know this tournament. It is never really discussed and from what I gather, the american soccer fans don't know much about the quality of South American teams and the quality of this tournament. The Latins I figure would know the importance of this tournament. I am still waiting for the day DC United will be in group play for the Copa Libertadores...

Posted by: Burke | September 25, 2007 3:35 PM

I totally agree with northzax who wrote:

These are the competitions I REALLY care about. DC v. Toronto... eh... no biggie. But the results and highlights of DC/Chivas will be followed across Latin America. As a DCU fan, I want to earn the respect of my South American soccer fan counterparts. A win here is crucial, to win the series brings respect.

Why so low for tomorrow night? The DC/Chivas game in March got 26,528 and that was a cold and rainy Thursday.

Dan -- perhaps you got the days mixed up? How could DCU expect "mid-to-high 20s" for a regular season game against Toronto, when they didn't crack 19k on either of their last two weekend home games.

Either that or the DCU office realizes their marketing has been sub-par? Or maybe they think a bunch of the Mexican-American fans that came last time won't come this time because they feel they've "been there, done that" when it comes to DC/Chivas? But why so many for Toronto?

Anyway... I'll be there. And I expect to see each and every one of you there with me.

Posted by: David | September 25, 2007 3:59 PM

The Toronto game is the first Saturday night home game since June. Wouldn't be surprised to see 28-30k there.

Posted by: Hoost | September 25, 2007 4:47 PM

I'm surprised it didn't get a bigger headline on mlsnet, only a small link to the behind the scenes preview. Yeah, it's a South American tournament, but it's going to raise the visibility of MLS. And I know there's a lot of fans out there that will root for any MLS team when they're playing against foreign opposition. The game hardly gets a mention on any of the other soccer news sites I tend to visit too.

Posted by: www.trickshottim.com | September 25, 2007 4:51 PM

Perhaps I am not the only one feeling a little mls v mex burn out. CONCACAF cup was kind of fun. I enjoyed the superliga more than I thought I might, but right now, I think this is just in the way of the MLS season and playoffs.

Posted by: seanT | September 25, 2007 5:19 PM

Yeah; burned out on the international club tournaments, too. Or maybe its all the international tournaments in general this summer... What a super summer it was... but DC needs to focus it's attention on MLS not on another semi-meaningless international tournament. It'll be all backups for DC tomorrow; what's the draw of that?

Posted by: Sportznut21 | September 25, 2007 5:37 PM

in no way is this a small international tournament. This is huge for dc united and the mls

Posted by: move kc to stl | September 25, 2007 5:47 PM

This would be big for the MLS to have a team get a win in the only real international tournament they participate in. Also if United advances, Chivas will be the first Mexican league team to not advance to the quarterfinals of this tournament in three years of their participation.

Posted by: Mike | September 25, 2007 6:16 PM

What on Earth is the reasoning for not having this plastered first page on MLSNET? Is it the fact they don't want to take away importance of the league play? Is it the fact that its a tournament in which the owners aren't making a big buck? Splashing the fact DC United is going up against Chivas in an important and respected tournament is GOODNEWS! This tournament makes interliga look amateur, of course its only its first year in existance, but its far more important and will be well into the future.

This is no way a semi-meaningless tournament. DC already has four MLS Cups, and while winning this year's is a priority because it's at RFK, winning an international tournament is a HUGE deal. Teams around the world all deal with congested schedules. If someone like Man U advances, as expected, in many of its competitions, they are balancing possibly 3 cup competitions in addition to the EPL (Champs League, FA and Carling Cups). And DC definitely wont be starting backups, I expect the strongest possible squad, especially since so many people were out of the Chicago game (if not by choice).

I'm sorry to report that, in a fruitless search for the proper ingredients for tomorrow evening's tailgate, I was unable to find fried goat rinds at either Safeway, Giant or Harris Teeter.

Anyone else watching the games on Fox Sports en Espanol? Man, this is great stuff - I am watching Colo Colo-Millionarios now and the crowd is really into it.

northzax hit it right on the head in saying these are the games that increase MLS' profile overseas and players throughout the Americas will be watching

If you get FSE, turn it on now to watch this game live from Bogota - it's almost halftime now. Video feed is a little shaky.

Posted by: FC | September 25, 2007 8:48 PM

I sincerely hope we are not amped for tomorrow.

While I agree that the U.S./Mex. thing is a bit worn out this summer, the solution to that should be to get rid of the SuperLiga and enroll in these competitions (Copa Libradores and Copa Sudamerica). I find them much more interesting than the pseudo-tournament.

I can't remember - are Mexicans teams allowed in the Copa Libradores? I.e., is it only CONMEBOL, or do they let anyone else in CONCACAF in besides Mexico?

Posted by: Kyle | September 25, 2007 9:17 PM

Does anyone know if the game is blacked out on mlslive.tv?

They can't come to your home and make you click the links people. It's all right there (and has been for some time) on the internet if you just casually look for it.

Posted by: Eugene | September 25, 2007 11:10 PM

Yeah, MLS put some stuff out today. But United's had stuff on it's page for quite some time, including articles about the draw, and there's this thing called a schedule where the games have been listed.

Posted by: Kim | September 25, 2007 11:25 PM

Eugene-

I was going to write something like "Of course you'll support United tomorrow; after another futile dismal disheartening season all MetroSuck fans need to support a winner" etc. etc., but then I remembered that I actually found myself cheering for the Galaxy (!?!) against Pachuca in the SuperLiga final. Why would I do such a thing? Do I enjoy misery and self-flagellation?

Because those who say MLS needs some international hardware are spot-on. It's time for some respect. MLS has raised its profile in the gossip pages with Bencham, now its time to raise our profile in the Sports Pages. Who better to hammer out some respect than United?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we're still the only North American team to win an international club competition. Another one would show everyone who Los Reyes del Norte truly are. Vamos United!!!!!

They play soccer at RFK?

Posted by: Max | September 25, 2007 02:28 PM

I thought that was a funny comment until this morning...

My coworker actually drove in today because he thought we had to drive to Fedex after work for the match.

After I told him it was at RFK he was a little shocked.

"but the news said RFK was closing after the Nats left" - coworker

"its just closing for baseball" - my response

"No, I'm positive that RFK is closed for good they even had a ceremony at the Nats game"

I didn't convince him until I showed him a small quote at the bottom of one of the Nats articles that stated "RFK will still be used by DC United"

Please, Washington Post if DC United wins tonight put a headline in the front of the sports section that says "DC United wins at RFK" or some other headline that confirms that yes RFK is still standing.

Posted by: Southeasterner | September 26, 2007 8:22 AM

Mexican teams are allowed in Libertadores, but that is it for now in CONCACAF. Hopefully, somehow that will change to let at least one MLS team. And I guarantee DC will put a full squad out...people who say this is a semi-meaningless game, really do not know the quality of these tournaments...

Posted by: Burke | September 26, 2007 8:33 AM

grotus: you're wrong. Pachuca won this very same competition last year.

Posted by: EdTheRed | September 26, 2007 9:00 AM

The Gals won the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2000 and were expecting to go to the 2001 FIFA Club World Championship, but that tournament was canceled when Sepp found out that LA would be playing - actually it was canceled due to apathy.

Thanks for the corrections. When I said "North American" I meant American as in from MLS, but since the Galaxy did it, I was still wrong. I assumed that Mexican clubs played club competitions in South America fairly regularly.
