Matchday 27: Toronto FC at DCU
Apologies for late start. Wedding duties.
Lineup: GK Perkins; Ds McTavish, Boswell, Vanney, Burch; MFs Fred, Gomez, Simms, Gros; Fs Emilio, Kpene.
Also known as: Lineup you submit when a last-place team that cannot score visits a first-place team in the midst of an important international tournament.
Reserves: Nolly, Carroll, deRoux, Dyachenko, Mediate, Olsen, Moreno.
Namoff, despite being listed as probable, will not dress. United now taking injury report advice from the New England Patriots. Sorry for mixed sporting metaphor.

Disagree!! Everyone in this lineup is a starter. At Harrisburg, it was almost all reserves. Even tonight's bench is better than the Harrisburg starting lineup.

::rant on::
I really hate HDNet for this exclusive stuff... not that it matters, because I'll just get to buy whatever the cable company says...
::rant off::
If we get a two goal lead, Gomez should be coming off. Even if we have a one goal lead after the 70th minute.
Posted by: RB | September 29, 2007 7:33 PM
And besides, who do you think would win if TFC played Harrisburg?
I'm not sure I'd put my money on TFC.
Posted by: Sean | September 29, 2007 7:34 PM
Who does HDNet have tapes of to get these exclusive games?
Posted by: Bart | September 29, 2007 7:37 PM
Anonymous - It was ment as a faceitious comment, not a statement of fact, hence the word "variation."
Sean - I think I would likely refrain from calling a bookie on that matchup as well...
Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 7:37 PM
1-0...
TFC?
Posted by: Sean | September 29, 2007 7:51 PM
The radio announcer more or less said Perkins was lost on the free kick -- did anyone see it?
Posted by: RB | September 29, 2007 7:55 PM
Oh oh. The team that can't score meets the unbeaten team. I hope the streak doesn't end tonight. We are only 3 points ahead. Need this game.
Posted by: Bart | September 29, 2007 7:56 PM
Can anyone think of a way to teach Kpene that the ball going into the opponent's net is a GOOD thing?
Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 8:05 PM
How many opportunities is Kpene going to blow?
Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | September 29, 2007 8:09 PM
Wow, when did Simms turn into Roberto Carlos? I thought that was in...
Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 8:12 PM
And Kpene again! Geez, one of my U-13's would have buried that.
Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 8:13 PM
Kpene misses another, this time off a header from a perfectly crossed ball from Burch. Way to head it straight down. On a positive at least they took down the Nats outfield wall
Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | September 29, 2007 8:13 PM
Please, please, please Tommy, put Kpene on the bench and out of our misery!
Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 8:22 PM
Kpene hasn't been the same since he cut his hair. He went from inconsistent to just bad.

Posted by: RB | September 29, 2007 07:55 PM
Troy started the wrong way and then couldn't recover when the ball went into the far corner. Looked like a replay of the Beckham free kick.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2007 8:34 PM
I think Hope Solo could play a better forward position than Guy Kpene.

But I'm waiting for Jay Nolly to tell the world that he could have stopped that Robinson free kick.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2007 8:39 PM
Damn i wish somebody ACTUALLY could get their cable provider to get this network. Since I can't watch DC, I'm scouting Chivas de Guad on Telefutra. The game looks alot like Wend.'s game, Chivas pushing hard for an egualizer, but still can't finish anything. Hell, they can't even buy a bucket!!

Posted by: Throwin | September 29, 2007 8:49 PM
MLSNet is giving it to Fred.

Wow, what a curl? Great goal by Fred, but it was a terrific turn by Emilio that got the ball to Jaime to set up the attack.

ok It's over. Pull the starters out. It's 4-1.
Posted by: Bart | September 29, 2007 9:05 PM

Champions Cup and Copa Sudamericana, I believe.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2007 9:32 PM
Thought the Sudamerica berth was based on our finish in the CCC. The CCC berth was our reward for last year's Shield.

Anyone else notice that Emilio looked a little upset that Jaime shot (and scored) instead of passing to a wide open Emilio in the center of the goal?
Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | September 29, 2007 9:58 PM
Chief Wiggum, I totally saw that.
He was quite upset.
But that is gone now that he got that CRACKING left footed volley.
Marc Burch for 2010 World Cup starting LB!!

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | September 29, 2007 09:58 PM
Yep, saw it. Everyone was celebrating and he was moping. That was an important goal, put us up 3-1, and he was more concerned that he didn't get to score it. I realize he is trying to earn the golden boot, but the win should have been the most paramount goal and he should have been happy for it.

A big part of the boost in attendance were MSI teams being honored for great sporstmanship. They were in the upper bowl.

"Marc Burch for 2010 World Cup starting LB!!"
But Bornstein is sooooooo good!!!
Posted by: Bob Bradley | September 29, 2007 10:27 PM
Could Kpene's changing hair styles be distracting the team? Or himself? 99 comes in and the game changes, once again.
Two different games tonight, each 45 minutes long. I'd love to hear what Soehn told the team in the locker room!

According to Ben in the post-game interview on HDNet, he told them they were trying too hard to come down the middle, that they needed to start playing wider to stretch out TFC's defense, and they needed to play quicker. They listened, and it worked.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2007 10:36 PM
yeah, I definitely noticed we were trying to force it down the middle in the 1st half. I never doubted we would win this game though. Toronto was fairly pitiful. The freekick was a gift. Troy really did misplay it and even then it basically went in right over his head. Should have stopped it.
We had pretty much all of the ball though. I expected Jaime would do his thing in the second half and sure enough... Some really remarkable goals! Burch killed that ball.
And we were a man short for that 5-10 minutes when Fred cramped up yet again and had to leave the match. Get that boy some potassium, stat!
The referee was pitiful once again. Why do the refs have it in for DCU? Marco retired eons ago. Burch was giving the loud side AR hell after Canazales whacked him on the ankles, and rightly so. That dude was tellign the ref to caution our guys in the first half but couldn't be bothered to do the same for us.

Posted by: Glenn | September 29, 2007 10:48 PM
Unfortunately it may not be this simple. The post match report says he questionable for Tueday due to a groin strain.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2007 11:00 PM
A man short without Fred was nothing -- we were a man short for the 45 minutes Kpene was on the pitch. Atmosphere was electric tonight, love when they open the upper deck all the way around.
Posted by: CD | September 29, 2007 11:55 PM
Another possible explanation for the weak first half- DC played a number of almost-good crosses into the box that tended to be short. I wonder if the players weren't used to a less lively ball due to the colder weather. What do you all think?

Stupid HDNet. Looks like I'm listening to the dulcet tones of Tony Lamarzi on WMET 1160.
