Where's Bowzer?

I have important news to share.

Well, yes, Shanghai is one of the world's great cities and should not be missed during a trip to Asia, but that's not it.

Indeed, the U.S. team is concerned about another sluggish start in its Group B finale Tuesday evening against Nigeria and sees the African champions' speed and athletic ability as a significant challenge. But you probably already knew that.

Yup, defender Stephanie Lopez has an interesting story to tell and defender Tina Ellertson has strong ties to Nigeria (her mom is Nigerian), something you can read about in The Post and on our Web site on Tuesday morning.

But here's what you really need to know:

Scott Powell, one of the U.S. team doctors here in China, was a founding member of the doo wop group Sha Na Na. I am na na kidding. He played at Woodstock (right before Hendrix came on). He was on the group's TV show in the late 1970s. His acting career took him to the set of Grease and Caddyshack (he played Gatsby, one of Rodney Dangerfield's cronies -- white tux on the left at Rodney's table in the clip below) before returning to Columbia for premed. He's now a specialist in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine in the L.A. area.

It should also be noted that USSF head of communications Jim Moorhouse made a guest appearance on the Star Trek TV series.

Now did you really think the Insider could pass up an opportunity to work Sha Na Na, Hendrix, Caddyshack and Trekkies into a soccer blog item? I think not.

Does Frimpong speak her mother's native tongue, whatever that may be (Yoruba? Hausa?), and did she get a chance to use it on that plane the other day? And FWIW, her father is Ghanaian, but I don't suppose she is likely to encounter anyone from the Ghana WNT at this point.

Another Sha Na Na alum has also taken an interesting path (http://www.hofstra.edu/home/news/PressReleases/062507_robertleonard.html).

Request to unmarried USWNT players: please consider keep your maiden names, at least on your jerseys. Many of us (even Julie Foudy) have a hard time keeping up with the changes. I, for one, am constantly wondering how these "new" players (e.g. Kate Markgraf) get starting roles so quickly. Besides, no-one has ever heard of Landon Kajlich.

Thank you.

The Weather Channel says that the weather will be an even bigger factor on Wednesday than on Tuesday. TWC explicitly discussed the WWC in its reporting on the typhoon, which was nice.

I seem to remember Mia wearing a Garciaparra jersey, which name barely fit across the back.

Posted by: WNT fan | September 17, 2007 10:05 AM

Very nice article on Ellertson, nee Frimpong, thanks. And I quite agree that footballers, like most of their counterparts in other professions, should continue to use the surname under which they first gain notoriety. That could be either one's birth name or a spouse's surname, depending on the circumstances.

Ives is reporting DC is close to signing Veron for the '08 season.

Steve, Dan, and the rest of the SI crew, heard anything from Estadio RFK about this?

Posted by: Bret | September 17, 2007 10:39 AM

Nah . . . . they should do whatever they want with their names. Foudy should do her job and learn their names. Rampone and Markgraf have been married for years and Foudy is still calling them Pearce and Sobrero.

Posted by: WNT fan | September 17, 2007 10:53 AM

As far as I know, nothing has changed on the Veron front. DCU has said all along that if they failed to sign the certain "Argentine star" this year, they felt they had a very good chance of getting him next year.

Whatever happened to Cat Reddick?

Posted by: sitruc | September 17, 2007 11:19 AM

Oh, man. I know DC United can use a break every now and then. But what about MY needs?

Posted by: Joe S. | September 17, 2007 11:26 AM

Now Cat Whitehill.

Mia played as Garciaparra in the second half of the last match of the 91'ers farewell tour. She played as Hamm in the first. Thank goodness no player married Schweinsteiger or Van Nistelrooy and decided to hyphenate.

While we're on the topic of names, I noticed that the Russian team prints their names in English? Has anyone seen a Russian league game and do they use Cyrillic?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | September 17, 2007 11:52 AM

It's not just the Russians; it's the Chinese and Koreans and everyone else. I'm pretty sure that FIFA mandates the use of Latin-alphabet transcriptions, just as they limit the range of numbers than can be used.

Further to earlier posts on WWC NCAA players

Ali Riley of NZ plays for Stanford.

Stanford is now ranked #1, and a local freshman keeper made her first start for them this weeekend against Rutgers.

Oops! Actually, I believe the correct term is transliteration, not transcription.

The only thing this confirms is that next year is going to be a disaster as far as retention.

Is it worth taking Vernon if it means we lose Gomez and Emilio?

Do Gomez or Emilio deserve a DP slot?

Could we trade Gomez for a DP slot to sign Vernon and use the other to keep Emilio?

How much are Burch, Boswell, Perkins and the rest going to ask for next season and how do we keep under the cap?

Could we reduce Talon's salary now that bald eagles are close to being removed from the endangered species list?

Who do we give up for the San Jose picks?

This should make it hard to tell the teams apart during the border derby. Never mind, ours have the ugly designs.

With Colorado having an Eagle mascot as well, Talon has negotiating power. He could easily go to an expansion team in the coming years or even the likes of NJ or RSL. I think we should give Talon DM money in the next two years. I think it would be horrible for the organization if the premier mascot and premier eagle in MLS did not receive designated mascot status and money.

This is the second time in two days that Sha-Na-Na has come up. While watching Forensic Files, an expert on writing analysis was interviewed. He had been in Sha-Na-Na, and when he reading their contracts he learned about how others write. And he's now a PhD.

Sha-Na-Na, is there anything it can't do?

Unfortunately, it looks like she has gained about 15 lbs and slowed down a lot.But she has company, this team's lack of pace may get it beat....

Speaking of Talon, RSL blogger extraordinaire , RSLFM, reports (http://rslfm.blogspot.com/2007/09/091307.html) that Talon groped (well, sort of) her at the RSL/United match:

"At about the 20th minute, DC United's foam eagle mascot appeared directly in front of us. We were in the front row of our section and the standing mascot was roughly eye-level with us. Obviously provoked by my RSL jersey, the mascot ("Talon") approached me and stuck his hand (wing) toward my chest. The bird reached for and grabbed the block-letter "XANGO"--pulling the material several inches away from my breasts. I never suspected "Talon" was doing anything more than hamming it up for the nearby fans--many of whom were young children....

...Freshly groped, I spent the halftime break listening to a pulsating drum circle underneath the stands near where people go to smoke..."

Naughty, naughty, Talon.
