Boo!

To celebrate Halloween, I pose this spooky question: Is D.C. United in for a trick or a treat tomorrow night? Will it be another frightful evening of playoff soccer at Estadio RFK? Or have they exorcised the demons of seasons past and are on their way to a sweet ending?

While you consider the possibilities, please read today's story on the injury situation and the reaction in Brazil to the country being awarded the 2014 World Cup.

I leave you with some Iggy Pop (accompanied by the B-52's Kate Pierson). The tune is "Candy," and although James Newell Osterberg Jr. (his birth name) was surely writing about a girl (or a narcotic), the title and lyrics fit nicely into our ghoulish Halloween theme:

Candy, candy, candy I can't let you go
All my life you're haunting me
I loved you so
Candy, candy, candy I can't let you go
Life is crazy

RFK isn't exactly a house of horrors. There have been numerous playoff triumphs there, lest we forgot the two most memorable (IMO) the '97 MLS Cup final and the Eastern Conference Finals PK victory over the Revs. Vamos United!

Posted by: Luis | October 31, 2007 9:39 AM

3-1 United

2 goals by Benny and one by Kpene off the bench. Chicago gets their's in the 93rd.

Posted by: Rocko | October 31, 2007 9:43 AM

Of course, United will win tomorrow night. It is inevitable. It is written. Forever will our reign of brilliance dominate MLS.

BTW, what the devil was Sepp talking about during the Brazil presentation? Should be Sepp Blather instead of Sepp Blatter. Please keep your footballers? We don't want all the national teams in the world to be made up of Brazilian footballers? The dude is just plain strange. I had to laugh.

I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm
I'm a runaway son of the nuclear a-bomb
I am a world's forgotten boy
The one who searches and destroys

let's see which referee they have assigned to the match. That could have a lot to do with how scary it is. Could it be the really scary Brian Hall? or the even scarier Abby Okulaja? I shudder at the thought.

Posted by: Glenn | October 31, 2007 9:58 AM

We will follow Jaime's lead to victory. Be prepared for a Barra in full voice.

By the way, Steve, any news from Chicago about reaction to the flares being lit there?

That sure as hell wouldn't fly here.

Spit upon his face and scream: There is no Oedipus today

This is no play you're thinking you are in
What will you say

Take the blue mask down from my face
And look me in the eye

I get a thrill from punishment, I've always been that way

I loathe and despise repentance
You are permanently stained

Your weakness and indifference and indiscretion in the streets

Dirty's what you are and clean is what you're not

You deserve to be soundly beat

Posted by: LouReed!!! | October 31, 2007 10:10 AM

Hmmm, I always thought that "candy" = drugs in that song...

Posted by: edgonyou | October 31, 2007 10:12 AM

guys i think we need to remember that we always get eliminated by chicago fire...but i am hoping for a win

Posted by: Fulvio | October 31, 2007 10:21 AM

Hmmm, I always thought that "candy" = drugs in that song...

------

good point. you're probably right

Posted by: Goff | October 31, 2007 10:29 AM

I will alter the original post slightly

Posted by: Goff | October 31, 2007 10:31 AM

Huh...I always thought "candy" = Bowie. ;-)

Posted by: EdTheRed | October 31, 2007 10:32 AM

Blanco doing the Triple Lindy will be the trick. DC United winning 2-0 will be the treat.

Posted by: Chico | October 31, 2007 10:36 AM

Posted by: Soy United! | October 31, 2007 10:45 AM

I thought candy was something to be hidden.

Posted by: Rupaul | October 31, 2007 10:49 AM

I always thought "Candy" was about a girl. Lots of lyrics in there that don't really comport with the drug theory, esp Kate Pierson's part. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Oh yeah... DC 3 Fire 0
DC brings the intensity and swarms Chicago's penalty area early. (Emilio, Moreno, Olsen). Blanco sees roja.

I'm dressed up as Ben Olsen for halloween. Unfortunately, my beard, after 2 weeks growth, is barely as powerful as his 30 minutes after shaving.

Posted by: Colm | October 31, 2007 10:52 AM

Benny's Beard + Kpene's Hair = BIG WIN!

Posted by: Ray Hudson for Wynalda | October 31, 2007 10:53 AM

Great Thorton Mellon reference Chico - I knew I liked you for some reason.

If DC loses, gotta think pretty substantial changes are coming, that would be two playoff flameouts in a row after winning the SS. Already lots of offseason question marks regardless of the outcome (Jaimie, Gomez, Vanney, Gros & I would even throw Boswell in the uncertainty column)

Posted by: Henchlow | October 31, 2007 10:54 AM

I think what sepp was talking about is that there are maybe 4-5 of the top 20 national sides that have the majority of players who play in domestic leagues where fans can see them. brasil and Argentina produce star after star who leave at 17 and don't return until they are 35. The constellation of stars in epl, la liga and serie a keeps growing. He wants a world in which the next kaka can make a rational choice to play professionally at least on the same continent he was born and grew up on.

Posted by: Northzax | October 31, 2007 10:59 AM

We'll win if Tommy keeps Bozilla off of the bench. DC 2 (Fred and Benny) Flamers 1 (Blanco from PK). Then, DC takes the series in PKs.

Posted by: Ray Hudson for Wynalda | October 31, 2007 10:59 AM

News flash! Last night at the drag races when Fenty was shaking hands and walking down the rope line I yelled at him to give DC United a stadium. And he gave the THUMBS UP!!! It's a done deal, I mean THUMBS UP!!! Woohoo! (zzzzzzzzz).

Oh yeah, DCU 2-1, OT and PKs, where we win 4-3. Go DCU!

Posted by: Cub Reporter | October 31, 2007 11:03 AM

Cub Reporter,

Sweet! That's two verbal commitments from the Mayor in 3 days. And, unlike when I asked him at mile 20 in the marathon, he can't claim he ha hit the wall, was dehydrated, or hallucinating!

""Last night at the drag races when Fenty was shaking hands and walking down the rope line I yelled at him to give DC United a stadium.""

Posted by: delantero | October 31, 2007 11:09 AM

Iggy Pop did drugs...really??? I've lost faith in the world.

Posted by: Tweaked | October 31, 2007 11:33 AM

Northzax I think he was actually refering to the phenomenon of players growing up in Brazil leaving in their late teens to play in abroad and then playing for a European or Middle Eastern national team.

Posted by: dwbpnm | October 31, 2007 11:37 AM

It's a much better view of Kpene's hair if he's riding the pine.

DCU 2-1 regular time.

Extra Time?

Time to slay the demons.

Posted by: spike_2.0 | October 31, 2007 11:58 AM

Sure, but that is related to the fact that there are better opportunities abroad, not just for the very few top players, but along the entire spectrum of brazilian soccer. What does it say about Brazil that they produce not just one or two top flight stars regularly, but the bulk of the top 200 world players, over and over, for the last several decades, and they can't keep them at home, even the second tier players have better opportunity elsewhere. What does it say when you notice that there were more brazilians who saw playing time in the champions league last year (46, I believe) than any other country? It's not even their continent. If i recall, there were more Brazilians than English and Germans combined (or pretty close to it)

Posted by: Northzax | October 31, 2007 11:59 AM

I just hope united is better in socc-vember than they were during socc-tober.

And I'm pretty sure that song is about those delicious little candy corn pumpkins.

Posted by: stairs | October 31, 2007 12:02 PM

"Two verbal commitments"? Sounds like one verbal and one manual with the thumbs up.:-) But that's absolutely great. Maybe if he hears it enough, he'll come around.

Goff, how about giving us your updated prediction? Will we get a treat or are we in for another 4-0 schlacking at the hands of the Fahr?

Posted by: Bloomingdale FC | October 31, 2007 12:25 PM

"If i recall, there were more Brazilians than English and Germans combined (or pretty close to it) "

Perhaps, but don't forget that Brazil is a far more populous country than either of those. 190 million Brazilians, 60m in the UK, and 82m Germans. And given the passion for the game, it's no wonder they produce more great players -- all of whom go where the money is.

As far as playing on national teams goes... Many of Brazil's third tier players would never make Brazil's national team, but would be first-string starters with many other countries. Players want glory as well as cash, I think.

Guzan, Parkhurst first award winners

Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan earned 2007 Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year, New England Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst won the MLS Fair Play award, and the Columbus Crew earned the MLS Team Fair Play award as the first three of the MLS year-end awards were announced on Wednesday in voting by media, players coaches and general managers.

Posted by: RK | October 31, 2007 12:30 PM

Oh yeah... DC 3, CHI 1. (Fred, Emilio, Emilio) We win in regular time.

Posted by: David | October 31, 2007 12:31 PM

My prediction is DCU 3 - Fire 0 go, go DCUnited

Posted by: OrlandoGator | October 31, 2007 12:45 PM

DC United 2, Chicago Fire 0.

Gomez on a free kick, Olsen off a cross (possibly from Burch, but my clairvoyance is blurred at the moment...)

My work colleagues keep throwing mini Snickers and Tootsie Rolls at me because I'm walking around saying, "Candy, Candy, Candy hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmm."

Thanks Goff.

Just confirmed that Summers is going to show Arsenal v. Man U at 8:30 am and re-run 5:30. No cover charge. It's on the Orange Line at Courthouse Metro those who are not sure. Sam Adams coffe with no suger and cream.

DC United 3- Fire 1 my prediction. Blanco and Brown red carded.

Posted by: td | October 31, 2007 1:05 PM

For those wondering, Jair Maruffo is the ref.

"Beautiful beautiful
Girl from the north
You burned my heart
With a flickering torch
I had a dream that no one else could see
You gave me love for free"

I'll say it's just a cigar myself...
Good song, good fold-out cover art on the CD, but the rest of the brick album wasn't memorable. Now I'm stuck with Kate and IggyPop in my head for the rest of the day. grrr.

I predict an overtime win for DCU.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | October 31, 2007 1:20 PM

or heroin...

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | October 31, 2007 1:26 PM

I'll stick with my predictions before the playoffs started: 1-0 Chicago victory at home, 1-0 United victory at home, DCU wins in PK tiebreaker.

Posted by: Goff | October 31, 2007 1:37 PM

Goff, how waas practice today? Did you go?

Posted by: Soy United! | October 31, 2007 1:46 PM

For those wondering, Jair Maruffo is the ref.

Posted by: Goose | October 31, 2007 01:18 PM

Brandon, Brian. Brian, Brandon.

2 yellows = 1 red.

Those were the days.

Thx,

Jay!
