Matchday 28: DCU at KC [Updated]

Gomez's shoes tonight.

UPDATE: Bad news. Josh Gros experienced blurred vision and headaches during the Chivas game and is back in D.C. We'll try to get more on this as soon as we can. In the meantime, get well soon to Josh.

His absence, in addition to Fred's, leads to a lineup not many of you would have guessed:

GK Perkins; Ds Namoff, Boswell, Vanney, Burch; MFs Olsen, Carroll, Simms, McTavish; Fs Emilio, Gomez. Simms as playmaker? Maybe we'll get to see a few more of those long-distance blasts.

Bench: Nolly, deRoux, Moose, Mediate, Dyachenko, Kpene, Moreno.

Moreno doesn't appear to be limping, which I guess is the good news.

This has been posted a few times in comments, but just so we're clear, if you need help finding CSN+ in your zip code please follow this link and look in the top right.

Wash Post preview, with tales of Benny and Devon McTavish being spit upon in Mexico. KC Star preview. And also, KC players giving away thousands of tickets to youngsters.

I would attempt to go over extensive playoff seeding scenarios, but here's the Namoff quote: "All we need to know is there's three games left and we need three wins. The rest will take care of itself." So I'll wait until tomorrow for that.

Pre-match, in-match, and post-match comments here. Bonus quotes to follow later tonight. This will be your last D.C. game of the season without the expert Goff ratings.

"This will be your last D.C. game of the season without the expert Goff ratings."

Is that a threat or a promise?
Thanks for your efforts, Dan. Hope we showed you something nice. We appreciate your efforts, and please continue to hang with us...

Goff-

What is wrong with your colleagues? Donovan takes the US Player of the year in a *landlside* ???

That is pathetic.

The link to the KC Star preview is broken.

Wow...that is one insightful preview from the KC Star:
"•BOTTOM LINE

The Wizards need to score."

Oh you think so, doctor?

Thanks, SteinBog! :-)

What we're likely to see out of KC:

--------------------- Hartman
Burciaga - Garcia - Wahl - Jewsbury
----- Morsink - Zavagnin - Victorine
--------------------- Marinelli
------------------- Sealy - Johnson

Sealy and Victorine are carrying knocks, with their likely replacements being Colombano and Harrington, respectively. I don't worry too much about KC being so creative that they'll break us down. I do, however, know that with all that speed up front, they can just lob our defense and start a foot race. McTavish really should start at center back tonight due to their speed advantage. I think it'll be Boswell next to him, as Vanney has played the full 90 minutes in 4 straight games and we are trying to rotate to keep people fresh. With Fred out, I like Gros being the one to hassle Victorine, who is having his best season in years. If we can keep him and Marinelli contained, we should be able to keep them to very few chances.

For some reason, I like Kpene's chances to score tonight. Call me crazy.

Anyone have information on how to watch this game online? Maybe on SopCast?

Posted by: Bart | October 5, 2007 7:07 PM

great, i am high and dry for the game tonight

Posted by: vasco | October 5, 2007 7:15 PM

For a fee, it's online at mlsnet.com

Posted by: emanon | October 5, 2007 7:29 PM

Vamos United!!!!!

Posted by: Panchito | October 5, 2007 7:31 PM

Sucks for Gros. I hope it's 'just' another migraine and not concussion-related.

Posted by: Ash | October 5, 2007 7:48 PM

The audio (in English) is free on http://wmet1160.com/

Posted by: seth | October 5, 2007 7:55 PM

CSN+ works and is very free where I'm at in PGC!! The feed should be coming in on a channel that is normally something else, but just check the CSN website and it will tell you which channel you need to be tuning into. 68 on Comcast in my part of PGC.

Posted by: Mike | October 5, 2007 8:01 PM

CSN+ is on channel 8 on RCN (at least it is in DC).

Posted by: seth | October 5, 2007 8:03 PM

FYI, if you live out of the DC Area and can't get the DC United game on video, I've got DC United on WMET from my computer and Maryland vs. Clemson on FSC.

Go Terps!
Vamos United!

Posted by: Colm | October 5, 2007 8:07 PM

even better the hockey is blacked out, and they are showing some football gambling show.

nice

Posted by: vasco | October 5, 2007 8:08 PM

Good thing about listening on the radio is you won't have to look at the tight football field and empty stadium.

Posted by: Mike | October 5, 2007 8:10 PM

No Jamie. I don't like.

Posted by: G-Dub | October 5, 2007 8:13 PM

The Caps game isn't blacked out here in DC from where I'm sitting.

Posted by: G-Dub | October 5, 2007 8:16 PM

Did I just here a Washington Warthogs reference? Awesome.

Posted by: Luis | October 5, 2007 8:22 PM

Wow, this grass field plays hard and fast like turf, no? Granted the field is short, but the ball really bounces and scoots.

Kinda like what I see from a 'makeshift' dcu lineup. Not much to recommend the Wiz, tho...

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 8:41 PM

Wow, perfect set up for Carroll, who shows a plowman's touch...

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 8:43 PM

DCU stinks!!!!!

Posted by: Jimmy Conrad | October 5, 2007 8:47 PM

But Conrad can't play the drums like I can.

Posted by: C. Gomez | October 5, 2007 8:50 PM

You can't blame Carroll for being out there. That's another mystery move by Soehn.

Paid off, too.

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 8:51 PM

I told ya so!

Posted by: Jimmy Conrad | October 5, 2007 8:51 PM

I hope Soehn just screams at them for 15 minutes straight.

Posted by: soccergirl | October 5, 2007 8:53 PM

mjh - how was Carroll responsible for Namoff giving it away and then being beat by Johnson?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 8:54 PM

That was all Namoff's doing, no question. DCU seems like it has a Mexican hangover...

Posted by: dug | October 5, 2007 8:57 PM

Ok, I don't know how to spell it, but the 'alues tappasando' commercials on WMET are the greatest commercials behind Eastern Motors and FREE MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT in the DC Market.

Posted by: Colm | October 5, 2007 8:57 PM

burch is on fire, he needs to be moved up, put him back in a forward position, he needs to be more selfish

our top third is not finishing, the ball is being played too much over the top, the ball is bouncing everywhere, we are pushing the ball wide, maybe up the middle would work for just tonight.

put in more goal scorers, kc is showing nothing, kpene is ready to shine, hattrick for kpene tonight

Posted by: not a coach | October 5, 2007 8:59 PM

Really disappointed in Namoff on the goal, but I think he knows he made the mistake and won't let it happen again.

We're getting chances. Hartman won't be able to continue to save them all. We can get at least 2 or 3 goals in the second half.

Posted by: Shatz | October 5, 2007 9:00 PM

Re Carroll: Lack of attack

empty shirt

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:05 PM

mjh - that's a fair assessment since he is a defensive midfielder. I guess by your reasoning Sims is also an empty shirt?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 9:09 PM

No overlaps, dumping the ball and watching, giving it up easily at the top of the box.

Take your pick.

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:10 PM

Still, not Carroll's fault.

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:12 PM

Legitimate shout for a penalty there. Nice work by Emilio. Corner comes to naught...

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 9:16 PM

I would like Carroll to be more creative too but I just don't think he is to blame for the goal or the team's poor first half.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 9:16 PM

Can the ref please do something about the Wiz defenders bear hugging DC forwards in the box.

Posted by: G-Dub | October 5, 2007 9:17 PM

...and an other shout for penal...

some real wrasslin'going on by KC..

And a great goal by Gomez!

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 9:18 PM

LOVE GOMEZ!!!!

Posted by: soccergirl | October 5, 2007 9:18 PM

Ah, well. Maybe there's some light at the end. Let's have Mediate in now.

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:19 PM

Mediate is in for Simms.

Maryland and Clemson are level at 1-1.

Posted by: Colm | October 5, 2007 9:23 PM

and how about Moreno for Carroll?

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:28 PM

mjh, I like your thinking

Posted by: soccergirl | October 5, 2007 9:31 PM

How bout Moreno for Olsen? I think that would work.

Posted by: Poopy | October 5, 2007 9:35 PM

Moreno for Benny.

Clemson 2-1 over Maryland.

Posted by: Colm | October 5, 2007 9:35 PM

I believe in peace through superior firepower.

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:37 PM

Little dodgy looking at the moment. Too many players unfamiliar with each other imho.

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 9:44 PM

Dyachenko has no concept. Can we loan him to Harrisburg?

Posted by: mjh | October 5, 2007 9:54 PM

The draw not an awful result on the road with several key players not ready, but I thought I smelled all three points a few times in that game. Perhaps it was during the non-penalty calls.

Posted by: JkR | October 5, 2007 9:57 PM

anybody watch the mlsnet feed, i have to say those are the worst announcers, jimmy conrad added nothing to the broadcast, bunch of amateurs, i should have put on wmet

gomez, thanks for that awesome strike!

Posted by: not a coach | October 5, 2007 9:59 PM

I'd somewhat agree with that statement not a coach. However, they were KC announcers so as DCU fans we may not have heard things we wanted to hear. But they didn't add anything to the match.

Posted by: Poopy McPoop | October 5, 2007 10:01 PM

I liked listening to Conrad...

Posted by: RB | October 5, 2007 10:19 PM

@mjh

You win man of the match for officially bringing the first Point Break reference to Soccer Insider! Ain't it wild?

Posted by: DCBird | October 5, 2007 10:41 PM

Carrol picked up another yellow. *Hey, how bout that?*

Posted by: Dyastanko | October 5, 2007 10:50 PM

Maryland 3-2 in OT. Great fun in CP tonight. Pleased with the Terps offense but that goalie, he needs some work. Poor touchs and timid in reaction.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 11:17 PM

Did you guys see Eddie Johnson on the Bobby Boswell yellow card call? Johnson gets fouled, then stands up to call for a card, and then hits the ground again as if he's in pain. What a chump.

Posted by: Shatz | October 5, 2007 11:21 PM

Hey all, too beat for a full post right now. Your injury status:

Clyde Simms: Weak with a bad stomach ailment that appeared in the middle of Thursday night and stayed with him all day. Coaches asked him to give them 10 minutes in the second half. He gave them 16.

Fred: Day to day.

Gros: Tom Soehn declined to comment.

Jaime: "It's broken," he said of his ankle, which was wrapped in ice. Then he laughed. (THIS WAS A JOKE) "Not bad, not good," was his real assessment.

Will have more tomorrow morning from some random Midwestern airport.

Posted by: Dan Steinberg | October 5, 2007 11:39 PM

jimmy conrad and the kc announcers were saying emilio deserved a card for diving when it he went down battling for the ball in the box.

notice they didn't say anything when johnson has a dida-esque moment to call for a card for boswell, or when sealy makes a blatant dive in the box.

if the ref is going to tell sealy to get up like that then he has to show a yellow. it's either a dive or a pk and it obviously wasn't a pk.

Posted by: pat | October 6, 2007 12:37 AM

also, i guess there weren't many options on the bench but dyachenko and mediate provided nothing. i would have preferred to get kpene in there for a bit.

Posted by: pat | October 6, 2007 12:38 AM

Kpene normally provides nothing... we need a better spark off the bench -- but so does every team (and they need a spark on the starting 11), so it's tough to complain.

Posted by: RB | October 6, 2007 12:56 AM

I disagree. Rod looked like he was doing pretty well dictating flow out there in his limited minutes. Would like to see more. He seems like less of a goal scorer and more of cerebral vision type player.

Posted by: viv | October 6, 2007 1:15 AM

please tell me more about jaime, he broke his ankle today?!, if he is out I'll cry.
how can you only write that one sentence about it, thats frustrating and I'm disappointed in your reporting of this.

Posted by: not a coach | October 6, 2007 1:32 AM

Dude--read. Jaime was joking about the ankle break. It appears to be day to day.

Posted by: viv | October 6, 2007 1:55 AM

Impressive attendance -- 14k+

Posted by: RK | October 6, 2007 2:45 AM

most of those fans had free tickets. great way to do business, kc

Posted by: Anonymous | October 6, 2007 7:35 AM

Dyachenko at times tried to take on multiple defenders, got tunnel-visioned. He's got good pace and strikes the ball well, good talent, but needs playing time somewhere to get to the next level.

It just seems the second options on attack haven't shown much growth throughout the season. Luckily the defense has been solid and people have been relatively healthy.
