Mornin'

-- FIFA will soon announce the host nations for the 2011 Women's World Cup (Germany or Canada) and 2014 World Cup (Brazil!).

-- MLS folks tell me ticket sales for MLS Cup at Estadio RFK have surpassed 30,000 -- an impressive figure considering neither participant will be known for at least another 10 days. Capacity will be around 46,000.

-- Anyone else notice that on Saturday in London, Chelsea scored six goals and the following day the Dolphins and Giants combined for two touchdowns at Wembley? Soccer sure is boring. ;-)

-- For those of you in the D.C. area, the United-Fire playoff game being played on Thursday has opened your weekend schedule to see Maryland play Virginia on Saturday night in College Park. The young Terps have an eight-game unbeaten streak. Just a thought...

Notice the British press is not complaining that Chelsea ran up the score :P

Goff, Thanks for every up to date news. Yes, I saw chelsea game. It was not expected. I wanted City to win but how about Man United. They are rocking...Nani's magical goal again. Tevez and Rooney's interconnection. Wow! And Man U and Arsenal is coming this weekend wich mouth watering...
Our United...that sounds great. We can pack the stadium and scare the hect out of Fire to dust.. DC United, the greatest football team in the United States.

Posted by: td | October 30, 2007 9:27 AM

And all the press who were covering Dolphins and Giants were all for Chearleaders. Not very much on the game.

Posted by: td | October 30, 2007 9:30 AM

Hey Susan

Notice that goal differential counts in soccer.

Looks like we've got some geniuses hanging out at the blog today.

Posted by: the cheat | October 30, 2007 9:54 AM

Hey cheat

Notice that you don't get a joke.

Posted by: RK | October 30, 2007 9:56 AM

Hey Cheat

Maybe you can educate the geniuses without being such a self-important wise ass

Posted by: WNT fan | October 30, 2007 9:58 AM

Actually, I believe score differential is one of the tiebreakers for playoff positions/seeding in the NFL.

Posted by: B.A. | October 30, 2007 10:03 AM

It was a joke - no need to get your knickers in a twist

How can you run up the score on a professional team....one that's sitting higher than you in the table at the start of the day. City were awful and deserve what they got. Also, goal difference can decide championships and Champions League sports. Score more!

Posted by: Score more! | October 30, 2007 10:11 AM

How are sales for this Thursday night's game?

Posted by: DirtyHarry | October 30, 2007 10:17 AM

Goff,

Any idea what attendance might be like Thursday night?

Posted by: Scotto | October 30, 2007 10:18 AM

Looks like some people forgot to take their humor pills this morning.

Lighten up Francis!

Posted by: Tweaked | October 30, 2007 10:18 AM

Ever notice how it's only the losers that complain about running up the score? Every team wishes they were in a position to *decide* whether to run up the score.

Posted by: Bart | October 30, 2007 10:20 AM

a WNT fan calling somebody else self-important?

Posted by: Irony? | October 30, 2007 10:21 AM

Good news, guys: A Lalas is picking against us: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/greg_lalas/10/29/fire.playoffs/index.html

Victory seems just a tiny bit closer.

You can watch the WC announcements live now on fifa.com

Posted by: Kev | October 30, 2007 10:26 AM

Heyzeus was that a crap NFL game to bring to London. The soccer gods are with us!!! HAHAHAHA!

Posted by: Anonymous | October 30, 2007 10:32 AM

After some Blatter babbling... It's Brazil!! Can't wait to go!

Posted by: Kev | October 30, 2007 10:38 AM

Goff,

from a report in an Argentinian newspaper: Blatter (about to meet with the Brazilian president Lula over the 2014 WC) has warned Brazil against investigating money laundering in soccer, which a Brazilian Congressional committee is doing or about to do. Could he be protecting himself? Havelange and his son-in-law Teixeira? Do you know anything about this?

DC United will lose to Chicago, 2-1 on aggregate, after a drab 1-1 draw. Emilio scores in the 90th. Gomez red-carded. Jaime injured. Perkins flails wildly at every corner. Blanco dives. Blanco whines. Blanco scores.

Mark it down people. United will lose.

Posted by: fat chance | October 30, 2007 10:55 AM

Dear fat chance - please move back to Chicago and stay off OUR blog.

DC wins 2 - 0 and Blanco is not effective just like the rest of his first season in the MLS.

Posted by: bobf | October 30, 2007 10:59 AM

"OUR blog" -- what a hoot. If you want your provincial blog, stick to a local paper like the Examiner or the Wash Times. The Post is a national paper.

Amazing how DC fans like to puff themselves up with how many blog hits Goff gets, but get shirty when the non-DC folks have something to say.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | October 30, 2007 11:03 AM

Still, no need to be a troll.

Posted by: RK | October 30, 2007 11:08 AM

Best quote from the Lalas article:

"They go to RFK, face the screaming, ravenous Barra Brava (Do people coincidentally "forget" to feed those folks on game days?) and must try to eke out a victory over MLS' best team in the regular season."

Posted by: Juan-John | October 30, 2007 11:09 AM

Please don't make this blog negative and petty like other sports sites. If you're angry or pissed off about your day, don't hop on here.

Posted by: Mike | October 30, 2007 11:12 AM

Blanco will break his nose on one of his famous dives. The Barra will hold up cards with "10" on them. Moreno, Gomez and Emilio will score. CJ Brown will pull a groin, Rolfe's....

Posted by: DirtyHarry | October 30, 2007 11:12 AM

wow you think Mastodon Juan has anger issues? Or maybe he is a LA Galaxy fan? Sure looks like the post he is referring to was meant as a joke.

Posted by: noanger | October 30, 2007 11:25 AM

Look I'm a huge NFL fan, but major irony in London. I couldn't help but chuckle as the Dolphins and Giants repeatedly ran the ball up the gut to gain a yard or two. And Eli Manning throws for what? 30 yards? Don't you Brits see how much more exciting the NFL is than that soccer stuff you love so much??? Defend that, Jim Rome.

Posted by: jasonVA | October 30, 2007 11:25 AM

Looks like the blog has a case of the Mondays.

Peter Gibbons: Let me ask you something. When you come in on Monday, and you're not feelin' real well, does anyone ever say to you, 'Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays'?

Lawrence: No. No, man. #$&, no, man. I believe you'd get your #$# kicked sayin' something like that, man.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 30, 2007 11:26 AM

From the SI Lalas piece:

""It's impossible to resist. Cuauhtémoc Blanco and this entire Chicago team is simply too fun not to enjoy watching.""

Is Lalas serious or is he just that dim? The Fire play the worst brand of football known to man. And if you've seen Blanco dive and whine once, you're bound to see it 30 times a game.

Fun? Not so much.

Posted by: delantero | October 30, 2007 11:31 AM

>>>Blanco dives. Blanco whines. Blanco scores

At least an interesting scenario for the Thursday match.

But hardly scientific.

I'm so happy that Brazil is going to host 2014 fifa world cup... I don't know if we are ready to host a big event like a world cup, since we don't have many stadiums ready for the games but I know government will do the best to build everything on time. I saw this video ( http://www.weshow.com/br/p/19726/copa_do_mundo_2014_no_brasil ) on the internet that shows the stadiums they are going to build. Some of them already exists, others are just a project. Let's go Brazil! Let's do the best world cup of all time!

Posted by: Victor | October 30, 2007 12:01 PM

Boy was the game at Wembley a snoozer. Not only was it a lousy ad for NFL, but they must have torn the bejeezus out of the turf.

As for Thursday, you have to admit that the game is just a toss up. I hope DC shows up and gets a break or two, but it will not surprise me if Chicago sits back to play for a tie. That's sure what I'd do.

It just seems like there has to be more of a benefit for the team winning the supporter's shield. Maybe a bye in the first round or something?

Posted by: Hacksaw | October 30, 2007 12:33 PM

I knew the Miami-Giants game was going to be bad, but I had no idea it was going to suck that much. That game was horrible. I felt bad for everybody involved and watching. At least they were entertained by the creatively dressed streaker.

Posted by: sitruc | October 30, 2007 12:53 PM

...and the Hokies unbeaten streak is a little longer.

Posted by: sitruc | October 30, 2007 12:54 PM

Why did they pick the Giants and Dolphins? Surely the NFL didn't think these guys were really contenders.

Indy-Pats would have been perfect.

Posted by: bristol | October 30, 2007 1:52 PM

Ironically, as bad as the Giants-Dolphins game was, a local radio guy here went to it, and said the fans had a great time.

bristol, they had to find a team -- and fans -- that didn't mind losing a home game. You'd never see Danny do that, unless he gets the parking money from Wembley.

Posted by: RK | October 30, 2007 2:20 PM

Next year EPL live in the US. It will be awesome!

Posted by: td | October 30, 2007 2:40 PM

Go Terps!

Posted by: Curious | October 30, 2007 6:51 PM

Wow, 30K tix for MLS Cup. That IS impressive, considering the game starts at 12:00 noon (9:00 a.m. on Sunday for you on the West Coast).

Just think if they had decided to have the Cup on Saturday at say 5:00 pm.

Not sure why they didn't - must be a poker championship or little league game on at that time slot.
