United News & Notes

A few things to share from the RFK training grounds, site of this morning's reserve match between DCU and Kansas City.....

*Josh Gros, who experienced more migraine symptoms in Mexico last week and did not play Friday in Kansas City, will see a specialist in Massachusetts tomorrow. I can't imagine he will be available this weekend against Chicago and you've got to wonder why he has not already been shut down for the rest of the regular season, if not the entire year. More on this subject tomorrow.....

*Kevin Payne tells me the club has made significant progress with one potential jersey sponsor with a national reputation and hopes to know more details in the coming weeks.

*United lost to the Wizards, 2-1, in the reserve game. I believe Jerson Monteiro scored the late goal for United, which conceded one goal just before halftime and another with about 15 minutes remaining. Stephen deRoux received a late red card. DCU did not look good.

We did not look bad, either. Addlery, mind his atrocious free kicks, was dominant out there. Those guest players were not the best. Nolly is horrible. I thought Arguez looked strong.

""one potential jersey sponsor with a national reputation""

Payne is putting it mildly. GUINNESS has a UNIVERSAL reputation.

What becomes of the Jersey sponsor revenue? Does it go to MLS or the club, and, if the club, are there any restrictions on what they can do with it? Could it be used for a transfer fee, for example? Scouting?

I disagree about Arguez. I thought the team looked a lot better in the second half when Jeff Carroll took over that d-mid role from Arguez. The rest of the game was pretty much how you'd expect it. A couple of good chances that Kpene and Addlery couldn't finish. There were some weird formations at times. Addlery was at right outside midfield for some of the second half, and Mediate was even a converted center defenseman at one point. But it's good to see that we've got some quality depth on the wings, if nowhere else. Justin Moose and Steve de Roux looked like the best players out there wearing black.

We would have won the game 5-2 if the goal was 30 feet high.

Can we get a picture of the new field? Please? Pretty Please? With Sugar on top?I can't wait until Saturday. ARGH!!

@delantero: Guinness? You mean to tell me the earlier rumors of a Preparation H sponsorship were false?

Color me disappointed.

I've had migraines for about 15 years and never once had symptoms similar to what Gros has described. I realize that everyone can have different symptoms but it seems pretty irresponsible to get diagnosed with concussions and then see different doctors until one says something different and give the green light. He probably should have sat for the season since then last time he got a concussion.

Did the rest of the team train? Wondering on Fred's status...

Posted by: Chico | October 8, 2007 3:26 PM

Is it just me or does it seem like Arguez is taking a lot longer to develop than what the brass at DCU had hoped for? I mean this kid is getting $76K this year, for what? I can't imagine we drafted him so high and are paying him so much money so he can see first team action in '09. Any thoughts on this Goff?

BTW... glad to have you back Goff and a huge thank you goes out to Steinberg for covering the Insider in your absence!

2 of DCU's u18's recently got called up to play with the U18 nats at a tourny in france. Do either of these players have a chance at training with the reserves/full team. If either of them are polished enough to practice with the team, are they almost surely off to college or is there any real possibility that the team will sign them straight to a dev contract?

Posted by: Heels | October 8, 2007 3:38 PM

I guess I just liked Arguez' size and prescence in the center.

Is it just me, or does Brad North look like Erpen?

Posted by: Garret | October 8, 2007 4:01 PM

Goff, any news on the team's health - injuries and gastrointestinal disorders? Also, is it correct that Jaime will miss Saturday's match against Chicago but will be available for the final regular season match?

""You mean to tell me the earlier rumors of a Preparation H sponsorship were false?""

No, no the Chicago Fire were to be sponsored by Preparation H.

The Galaxy by Pantene Pro-V Conditioner.

I had a sports head injury a little three years ago and still have post-concussion syndrome and migraines. There is no "quick-fix" sometimes in these situations.

Nail...head.

How much is Boswell wishing he'd signed with MLS for that contract extension and huge raise earlier this year? Not bloody likely he'll be heading to Europe, as he'd planned, when he isn't starting regularly for his club.

National sponsor - I heard it might be a telcom so I would immediately think of Sprint / Nextel or Verizon since they both have a strong local presence. Doubt it would be RCN since not really a "national" telecom player. Who is trying to break into the Spanish market? It would seem logical to tie up with DCU if targeting the hispanic market. AT&T logo would look nice on the front of the jersey!

Goff am I close? We know you have a the inside juice since this news can not be kept secret inside the DCU offices. Glidden's sponsorship with Columbus was painted on the wall weeks before the announcement. ;-)

I guess maybe migraines can yield different symptoms. My mom has problems with them and has some similar symptoms...nausea, blurry vision, etc. The drugs she takes do a pretty good job but at first it took a while to get the dosage correct. My guess is that the trip to altitude didn't do Josh any good.

Today was my first reserve game. Is it me or is that a small field? The score DOES reflect the game. We were outplayed.

Was that deRoux's second yellow? in any event, he deseved the ejection for retalliating in front of the ref. All I can figure is that the ref didn't see the KC push (shove?) that led to the retalliation.

Posted by: Curious | October 8, 2007 7:29 PM

I just caught with this morning's dead-tree version of the Post. The MLS standings on the statistics page indicate that DCU and KC have played 29 games apiece. Apparently Friday night's contest was double-counted.

*Heh* I was 2 yards away from the Deroux fight. It was quite interesting to watch.

The RFK field looks spectacular.

RE: Arguez contract: He's GA (Generation Adidas) and either doesn't count against the cap, or only a small amount counts against the cap, something like that. I can't recall the specifics, and I'm sure some other veritable font of knowledge will have the answer shortly.

Posted by: AlecW81 | October 8, 2007 10:19 PM

Todd, the field at RFK looks promising. It will look spectacular when we clinch the SS on it.

See Above: I told you so :-)

Even though the salary cap is increasing by the addition of teams - the per team amounts also need to rise.

It's time for a floor on salaries for guys appearing in more than 50% of First Team Matches. It should be at least competitive with what the avg wage for a person with a bachelors in a major city.

Anyone have links to a picture of RFK?
