MLS Cup 2008: Carson

Soccer Insider has learned that Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., has been chosen to host the 2008 MLS Cup on Nov. 23. Chicago and Dallas were the other finalists. Expect an official announcement soon. HDC also hosted in 2003 and 2004.

I tried to tell you guys this!

You heard it here first:

The 2012 MLS Cup will be held at Five Guys Burgers and Fries Stadium in Warrenton, Va, home to DC United.

Are they forcing Beckham to play? What are the chances of a Gals/Chivas final?

Posted by: sitruc | November 19, 2007 5:43 PM

Well of course it is. But to be fair, it is a nice stadium and the weather should be good.

I love how a fansbase of Euro-wannabe's somehow thinks that Chicago will be too cold for MLS cup. What a crock.

Kickoff time now 9AM EST/6AM PST

The HDC was a pretty poor venue for the 2004 final. A half-full stadium with awful daytime shadows isn't exactly the best showcase for the league.

Max, be serious, Galaxy are the jewel of the MLS; therefore so is their stadium. What do you think the "d" in HDC stands for? Diamond of course.

Posted by: MemRook | November 19, 2007 6:21 PM

The only reason I can even believe that HDC is getting it again is that the MLS promised AEG the ability to host "X" amount of MLS Cup's after they had purchased so many teams in the league to keep it afloat.

*sigh*

HDC = 27,000

RFK = 39,000-plus.

Way to maximize yer revenues, MLS. Really smart idea.

Hey at least, when DCU gets to the final of MLS Cup next year I wont have to fly anywhere! Too soon to get tickets???

Posted by: Cashous | November 19, 2007 6:59 PM

It really does not matter where it is. What they need to focus on is when. I personally hate the daytime games for a final and think it detracts in some way due to light and shadows along with the overall presentation. Have the game on Saturday night (or Sunday if they must) during primetime.

Did Chivas move to a new stadium? Or guess in the leagues eyes only the Gals count ?

The Home Depot Center will host Major League Soccer's championship event for the third time in League history. MLS Cup 2008 will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET (live on ABC and TeleFutura) on November 23, 2008 at the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy.

It's time the MLS takes a look at a home-away series for an MLS Cup final and give the fans a chance to root for their team.

But if they have to keep it in the one-off format than it should be in one venue every year; and until RFK is torn down it should be held there every year.

Likely 27k in HDC brings in more revenue (after expenses) than 39k in RFK does.

in stan the man, believe i can

rfk is a rental, revenue streams are limited, unlike hdc

AMEN. They have held it in Foxboro 3 times and the weather isn't exactly aces in November in Boston.

This is just a sham in hopes of Beckham making it and having a Hollywood ending. HDC will host the 2009 Cup as well; book it.

NASCAR schmascar. They shoulda done THIS year's Cup at 3:30pm ET and moved the race to noon.

Same here, only like 1/2 hr drive down the road or so. Sweetness

Not "likely more revenue." DEFINITELY more revenue. Does DCU/MLS get one red cent for parking? Does DCU/MLS get one red cent when you get a green hot dog from one of RFK's horrific concession stands?

I'm guessing, no, and no.

How about the cost to operate the two venues?

How about rent for the two facilities?

Taking these factors, [and probably a lot more that I'm forgetting right now] putting MLS Cup in RFK instead of a SSS was a poor financial decision. I'm guessing, however, that MLS wanted to give Fenty as much impetus(sp.) to DCU's SSS push. However, I think that it may have had the opposite effect. [The DCU-already-have-a-stadium types in DC can point to MLS Cup as evidence to further their misinformed opinions.]

I hope to God they decide to schedule this on a Saturday with about a 1800 EST Kick-off.

The TV scheduling for this year was a joke.

Posted by: Dave | November 20, 2007 11:25 AM

S*cks.

With the final in LA - and theoretically better weather, why not just push it back to December, once most college football games are over and do it on prime time on a Saturday night?
