South Africa Awaits
The U.S. Soccer Federation is in the process of finalizing the national team roster for the Nov. 17 friendly at South Africa. An announcement is expected in the next couple days. As many as 21 players will make the trip, with between 13 and 15 from European-based clubs (from what I've been told, all have been previously capped). The results of the MLS matches could potentially free up players to join the squad, but they would likely be added to the roster at a later date. The U.S. team will gather Monday in Johannesburg. A children's soccer clinic is planned for Tuesday, probably in Soweto.
Who would you like to see in a U.S. uniform?

I want to see Ronaldinho, Kaka, and Henry in a U.S. uniform. Boy would the Red, White, and Blue be unstoppable.

while Gaven did not impress earlier this season for the US squad, I think that after his turnaround with the Crew at the end of the season, he should get another shot at it.

Give Freddy a start. Call Altidore in, now that his season is over. I'd also like to see DeMerit get a full game in for us. And, though I think we have enough Euro-based defensive midfielders to make it unlikely, I think Clyde Simms is the best MLS defensive midfielder at this moment not still involved in the playoffs. I don't think he'll get called in, but he should at least merit consideration.
eboe-
No disrespect, but I couldn't disagree more. Gaven has done the "play well for the last 5 games of the season" act several years in a row. He's the same player he was 3 years ago, when he wasn't good enough for the national team.
Friendship Heights-
Ching and/or Johnson will still be active in the playoffs. One or the other will get called in, sure, but not both.

If you were ever going to experiment with the young guys -- this is the game.
If I see Twellman, then he must have pictures of Sunil with someone.

Neven Subotic at Central Defender

No on Jozy.
His first experience should be a US-based training camp, without appearing on the game day roster. Can't we take it slow with a player for once? I doubt there's too many players whose development was hindered by having to wait more than a week beyond their 18th birthday for a national team callup.
Posted by: Matt | November 8, 2007 1:08 PM
I wanna see Edu, Adu, Altidore, Parkhurst.
I don't wanna see Eddie Lewis, Taylor Twellman, Josh Wolff. I especially don't want to see Convey anymore until he's fully fit again.
Posted by: Zach | November 8, 2007 1:08 PM
Why Subotic? He declined Bob's previous invitation, and it's not clear that playing in this friendly would cap-tie him anyway.
Posted by: silentbob | November 8, 2007 1:09 PM
I agree rob. In addtion, I will ask Bob Bradly to bring Rossi from Vill. It would be in sane not to bring Rossi with the form he is playing in Spain. Don't sit like a sick bird and wear a nice suit when travel to Afridca like a real team Manager. Adu for sure up front.
Posted by: td | November 8, 2007 1:19 PM
Freddy and Jozy. Freddy and Jozy. Freddy and Jozy. The rest of the starters, whatever.
And oh yeah, Goff, nice to see you making up for that basketball story by putting up a lotta futbol posts... Wouldn't want you to get distracted or anything... :-)
Posted by: Juan-John | November 8, 2007 1:20 PM
I've seen myself is a US uniform several times. I make it look good. Where's my plane ticket to South Africa?
Posted by: sitruc | November 8, 2007 1:22 PM
"especially don't want to see Convey anymore until he's fully fit again."
Convey played with the Reading reserves and had the assist in a 1-0 win (can't recall the opponent). It was a nice Eddie-Lewis-like cross from the the wing to the middle of the box. I don't know whether he played 90 minutes.
Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | November 8, 2007 1:22 PM
Silent Bob,
How many players can you name who have played a senior international game with one country then switched and played for another?
Cap tied or not, I think unless a player has a horrible experience, he's going to stick with the first senior team he is capped with. Whether he agrees to play is another question, but he should be asked.
Posted by: Timoteo | November 8, 2007 1:24 PM
That's ok Chest Rockwell, I'm a Columbus homer ;-)
But I do think he has matured quite a bit this season and it would be interesting to see him in the mix...

Rossi has made it abundantly clear he has absolutely no interest whatsoever in playing for the US. It's not going to happen.
Posted by: Chest Rockwell | November 8, 2007 1:25 PM
Time for some new CB's start with Clarence Goodson and Eddie Robinson (if Houston loses before the Cup final). Let's base some of these selections on performance instead of reputation. Goodbye Gooch and others.
Posted by: tex | November 8, 2007 1:27 PM
"Convey played with the Reading reserves"
Reserves means to me, not fit. Making him travel to Africa would be a disservice to him while he's trying to regain his fitness/form. Let him stay home and continue to progress.
Posted by: Zach | November 8, 2007 1:30 PM
I heard that, Chest Rockwell. That's such a shame you know? He is expecting playing for Italy but he won't be picked for thir team so I guess he would have to settle in an unknown man post. GolTV needs to stop bringing him saying American abroad who are playing good. Because he is no American but he is Italian.
Posted by: td | November 8, 2007 1:40 PM
td --
I believe Rossi was born here, and lived here his whole life, that makes him American, but with dual citizenship.
Someone -- correct me if I'm wrong.
Posted by: steve-o | November 8, 2007 1:47 PM
For those with the Rossi complex, he's out for six weeks with a knee injury suffered last weekend. This plus his previous statements about playing for Italy make it extremely unlikely that he will play for the US in this friendly.
Posted by: Orange 14 | November 8, 2007 1:53 PM
Did someone actually list Boswell? Wow. After his great season, and even better marking in the playoffs?
More of the young guys playing in Europe. Less of the MLS.
Posted by: Hacksaw | November 8, 2007 1:55 PM
I want to see Freddy and Jozy start.
Posted by: Wes | November 8, 2007 2:12 PM
Mo' Mo Edu.
Let's keep boosting his confidence and experience.
Posted by: Shmenge | November 8, 2007 2:12 PM
How About NO Twellman.
As for the not so obvoius picks - Edu is a good one, Adu would be nice to see him start, Jozy/Dempsey combo would be nice up top, but probably won't happen for this match.
Posted by: Kevin | November 8, 2007 2:18 PM
Rossi, even if he said he wanted to play for the US can't because he's out for about 6 weeks with an injury suffered during Villareal's last game.
Posted by: owendylan | November 8, 2007 2:22 PM
How about a cap for Simms? I think he is deserving.
Posted by: tpm26 | November 8, 2007 2:34 PM
Maybe Conrad if KC gets kunked by Houston. If New England is out tonight, I'd like to see Parkhurst on the USMNT roster. [I'd REALLY like to see Shalrie Joseph...oh well]. Also on the 'I'd like list", beyond the usual BB suspects, are Altidore, Adu, and Rolfe.
Posted by: To' | November 8, 2007 2:36 PM
----howard----
dolo---gooch---boca---Bornstein/Pearce
Bradley----Feilheber

Altidore
Make Donovan earn his starting spot..I'm sick of his guranteed placement...
Just for call ups, how about trying Burch and Simms for experience, and sit Donovan until he mans up....maybe force him to watch Brian McBride videos until he cries..
Posted by: Cidmon FC | November 8, 2007 2:37 PM
I like Dempsey better on the right and Donovan up top...I think each is more dangerous in those positions.
Howard
Dolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra, Simek
Dempsey, Feilhaber, Bradley, Beasley
Donovan, Altidore(?)...why not?..as pure a forward as we have, though young
Posted by: Jared | November 8, 2007 2:43 PM
This game is on FSC, like many US games recently. Has the Disney group given up its USMNT rights?
Posted by: TV Watcher | November 8, 2007 2:48 PM
Matt:
Valid concern, but rushing Jozy would have been to cap him a year ago. Today, he's the best American pure striker and has two year of professional experience under his belt, so what are we waiting for?
I'd like to see:
------Howard--------
Dolo--Parkhurst--Boca--Pearce
------Bradley--------
Donovan-------Beasley
--------Adu----------
---Dempsey--Altidore---
The knock on Parkhurst is that he won't be able to hack it when the strikers are big and fast. Marking Benni McCarthy should be a good test for him.
Posted by: Jeff M | November 8, 2007 2:58 PM
Altidore & Adu would be nice to see. Another U-20 player whose had some impressive performances is Villanueva. He should appear on the MNT radar before too long...
Posted by: Cabra | November 8, 2007 3:02 PM
JeffM, most interesting lineup I've seen on here. Too bad it won't happen.
Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | November 8, 2007 3:10 PM
Nevin Subotic would be nice.
Posted by: loin of mykanos | November 8, 2007 3:13 PM
Adu got called into camp w/Arena a couple of years ago and even earned a cap. I don't think that experience set him back at all considering his form since the summer. Jozy deserves the call up and atleast 15 minutes...
Posted by: PKTaker | November 8, 2007 3:14 PM
What about me?
Posted by: Bruce Arena | November 8, 2007 3:16 PM
Who do I want to see:
G: Howard, Hahnemann
D: Cherundolo, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Califf, Pearce, Simek
M: Szetela, Feilhaber, Bradley, Beasley, Edu, Nguyen, Zizzo, Donovan, Klejestan
F: Adu, Dempsey, Davies, Cooper
Who I don won't see at this one:
Convey, DeMerit - let them recover
Altidore, Simms, Burch - send them to camp first, but do want to see them soon
Wolff, Lewis, Mastroeni, Olsen - too old now
Twellman, Johnson, Ching, Mapp, Arnaud - still in playoffs
Boswell, Gaven, Beckerman - not there right now
Clark - in the dog house
Rossi - keep dreaming
On the Bubble?:
Findley, Ferrari, Hill, Smith, Gomez, Bornstein
Posted by: Sean G | November 8, 2007 3:21 PM
Sean G- Did you watch Olsen play this summer? He out for minor surgery at the moment, but I'd be disappointed if he doesn't get more caps.
Gooch deserves every minute. He's got the size and power the US lacks so often.
We all know Donovan can come through when the result is relatively meaningless. Until he steps up in real situations, what's the point?
Posted by: Lifer | November 8, 2007 3:40 PM
"How many players can you name who have played a senior international game with one country then switched and played for another?"
Subotic is already provisionally cap-tied to the U.S., so playing for the senior team in a friendly won't really change anything.
The issue is whether he's currently one of the best handful of CBs in the USMNT player pool. I doubt that he is.
Posted by: silentbob | November 8, 2007 4:00 PM
Silentbob,
I didn't know Subotic had ever played with the USMNT. When did he play, against whom, and how did he do?
Posted by: timoteo | November 8, 2007 4:20 PM
I just want to see players in uniform who have a realistic shot of playing in the 2010 World Cup. I don't want to see a roster full of 30 somethings.
Posted by: Felix | November 8, 2007 4:23 PM
I say we let the kids play. It worked against Switzerland, even if the Swiss were not full strength. So I hope to see Adu, Edu & Altidore. Eddie Johnson if KC gets knocked out and if the Fire lose tonight I think Chris Rolfe is showing signs of deserving another call-up (even though he was terrible against Mexico back in Feb)
Posted by: Gilly73 | November 8, 2007 4:23 PM
"I didn't know Subotic had ever played with the USMNT."
He hasn't, but represented the U.S. at the FIFA U-17 World Championship in 2005. That provisionally cap-ties him to the U.S., but he is free to switch to Bosnia, for example, before he turns 21. If he hasn't by then, the initial youth team appearance keeps him tied to the U.S.
In other words, he is in the exact same boat as Freddy Adu, who is provisionally cap-tied based on his appearances for the U.S. in FIFA youth tournaments (I don't believe his appearances for the senior team in friendlies count).
Posted by: silentbob | November 8, 2007 5:04 PM
Of the players that currently would be available to play for the US I think the best XI would be:
Howard
Cherundolo Bocanegra Burch
Bradley Simms
Edu Beasley
Adu
Dempsey Altidore
I would imagine at a certain point in the game you put in some speed up top with maybe adding Findley or Donovan. I have never found Landon to be head and shoulders above the rest of the team but he is a good player and can change a game.
If Burch or Simms weren't to start there are good replacements in Bornstein and Feilhaber, respectively.
Posted by: black and red blood | November 8, 2007 5:07 PM
Quite frankly I have not seen Subotic play, but it seems from several articles about his play that he has the potential as a future center back with the USMNT. Maybe its a little early to call him up but it would be nice to invite him to camp, see how he fits in.
Posted by: timoteo | November 8, 2007 5:22 PM
black and red blood, that is a fascinating line-up...hmmm...I wonder if boca is strong enough to be the lone center back though, maybe
Who do you see as a possible alternate or sub for Edu late in the game? maybe a donovan or someone else? im drawing blanks on our right mids, but that would be a great line up if we could get them to play together
Posted by: patches | November 8, 2007 5:36 PM
If you sincerely think that Burch and Simms are the best options of what's available,it's no wonder you just can't get your head around the idea that DC got totally thumped by Chicago and have to blame the ref for making an absolutely correct call.
It would almost be as outrageous to suggest that Chris Leitch and Joe Vide start for the US. I mean, both teams those players play for were first-round playoff busts, by the exact same goal differential. Of course, I'd rather see the left back and d-mid from the team that gave up only one goal in 180 minutes in the playoffs than the left back and d-mid of the team that gave up three.
Posted by: Mastodon Juan | November 8, 2007 5:59 PM
Could Szetela come on for Edu (can't remember what side he usually plays on)?
Posted by: emanon | November 8, 2007 6:05 PM

Would you rather see the left back and d-mid from a team that gave up 34 goals in the regular season or the left back and d-mid of a team that gave up 45?
Just wonderin'

Honest? I'd rather not see Leitch or Vide or Simms playing for the USA, and I don't think anyone has seen enough of Burch (or that he's seen enough high level soccer) to think that he should be anywhere near the national team for a good while.

I want to see more of Freddy. The US needs attacking players that can make a difference and maybe by playing in Europe Freddy is finally growing up.
I want Gooch dropped and lets see Demerit gets some more time.
