DCU Trade Update
Nothing finalized yet, but.....
*Carlos Ruiz going from Dallas to L.A. could very well be part of a mega-deal that also involves Cannon.
*Still not sure what United is planning to relinquish in all of this.
*From what I understand, United's pursuit of Cannon did not begin until they received a formal transfer offer for Perkins from a Scandinavian club.
More later (hopefully).....
Carry on

Ruiz on the Galaxy = one more reason to hate LA
Posted by: sitruc | December 11, 2007 3:44 PM
This could involve the rumors of Landon going to San Jose. In which case this deal could end up involving over half the teams in the league.

You're assuming that Donovan or Ruiz will be on the LA roster in a few weeks, or that they won't be 'grandfathered' another year.
Posted by: Kim | December 11, 2007 3:44 PM
The Galaxy are the "crown jewel" of the league, so the league would bend their rules however they wish for them. Also, why would Perkins want to transfer to Scandinavia?!?!

Rights to Gomez to Dallas, deal contingent on Gomez and Dallas agreeing to contract?

Why would Perkins want to transfer to Scandinavia?
Troy's still young, especially for a goalkeeper. He's likely got all he can from MLS, time for another challenge, and maybe one that sets him apart for a National Team role.
Oh, and the MUCH bigger paychecks (that don't involve moonlighting) would be an incentive, too.
Posted by: Kim | December 11, 2007 3:53 PM
Well then it makes sense for DC to look at Cannon if it's CERTAIN Perkins will be transferring out.
Posted by: Bart | December 11, 2007 3:53 PM
Granted we seriously need a fwd, but I can do without Ruiz flopping and complaining all over the HDC. He's so annoying to watch and he's definitely not the same player he was back in 2002.

What! what! what!
Posted by: Beto | December 11, 2007 3:55 PM
why wouldn't Perkins want to go to Scandinavia? It's beautiful there. They play a summer season like we do. The style there is very rugged. Lots of crosses for Troy to gobble up. Wasn't Denmark one of Friedel's first stops in his Eruo career?

Have you ever seen Scandanavian women?
Posted by: SnoopDogg | December 11, 2007 3:56 PM
Perkins to Scandinavia? Say hello to Brian West, Danny Califf, and the other ex-MLS scrubs.
Posted by: bristol | December 11, 2007 3:57 PM
So who does Dallas need and who do we have that could match those needs? Does this change the potential outgoings?
With Perkins leaving seeming likely it makes more sense on DC's part. The difference between Perkins and Cannon might not be enough to justify the downsides in losing a player like Boswell and salary cap the difference between Cannon and Nolly is frightening.

Keeper Adin Brown, too...
Posted by: RK | December 11, 2007 3:59 PM
My guess is that Vanney goes back to Dallas in this deal.
Posted by: Dave Lifton | December 11, 2007 4:00 PM
Hmm...
Ruiz to LA
Cannon to DC
Gomez to Dallas
Seems to make sense since Dallas needs a playmaker and Denilson was a flop. Gomez would be a nice fit for Dallas and I think they'd give him two years. PLus offloading Ruiz's and Denilson's salary will leave room for Dallas to pick up a forward to replace Ruiz. Plausible deal...

Dallas need a central defender not Gomez. Look for Boswell be in the hoops next year. Mostly 'cause a) Soehn like Vanney better and ah "2)" 'cause Dallas already HAD Vanney and gave him up.

If Alexi Lalas is involved with this deal, then the Gals will wind up with Eddie Pope, Mark Lisi, Juan Berthy Suarez, Troy Dayak, Jorge Rodas and Missael Espinoza...

Interesting. I still think DC is going to lose Boswell to someone, get farther under the cap, and come out for the best in all of this.
Posted by: strago | December 11, 2007 4:06 PM
Who are we gonna re-sign next? Eduardo "The Tank" Hurtado?
Posted by: shirteesdotnet | December 11, 2007 4:09 PM
PRobably MArtin Machon.
Posted by: Jay | December 11, 2007 4:14 PM
What about Harut Karapetian or Victor Mella? Those two stud forwards have to be looking for work...

As long as Ruiz does not land in DC somehow. That would be catastrophic.

No, that would be a shame.
What would be catastrophic is if that guy wearing that 23 jersey somehow ends up in black and red.

I'm sure Rimando would love to come back...

"Perkins to Scandinavia? Say hello to Brian West, Danny Califf, and the other ex-MLS scrubs." -bristol
Last I checked Danny Califf was playing pretty well and captain of his team.

Would the league really let this happen? LA would have a DP and 2 of the 3 grandfathered players. I realize the league constantly modifies its rules to benefit LA, but this seems very unfair to the other teams in the league, many of which don't have even one DP.
===================================
Ruiz barely cracks the DP list. He is guaranteed $435k - if he was making Landon or EJ money I might be upset, but this isn't worth getting upset about.

"What would be catastrophic is if that guy wearing that 23 jersey somehow ends up in black and red."
...I know he's a great athlete, and could possibly help our speed problems on the wing (as well as set pieces)...
...But I don't think LeBron James is much of a soccer player. Plus, he'd DEFINITELY cost us a DP slot. :)

Is Ruiz sexy enough to play in LA?
My guess is LA wants Boswell and Boswell wants to be in LA.
With Veron and Cannon and without Boswell and Perkins DC will quickly become the ugly team of MLS...until Quaranta comes back in the trade for Gomez :-)
Posted by: Southeasterner | December 11, 2007 5:08 PM
Ah, well that's quite a bit different if an offer to Perkins was the trigger!
Good for Troy.
The consensus seems to be that this is something of an upgrade though at some cost money-wise. Veron will an upgrade (not necessarily to anyone in particular) and also will cost some bucks. I won't try and dissect the team's salaries but yeah, I wonder how much money is left for other moves even if Gomez leaves?
Posted by: Kire | December 11, 2007 5:12 PM
The transfer offer for Perkins must have been pretty good for United to be so seemingly eager to take it. Maybe they're thinking that they let Perkins go, send Gomez somewhere (Goff mentioned before that they were considering trading his rights), and then use the cap space from Gomez and the money from the transfer to sign somebody. Or maybe they send Boswell instead of Gomez and sign a defender. If DC play their cards right, they might gain a keeper upgrade and a new signing and lose their former keeper and a player they couldn't sign anyway.
Only one thing doesn't fit in all this: if Cannon ends up in DC, who's between the pipes in LA? Dario Sala? Steve Cronin? If it were anyone other than Alexi Lalas, I'd say that makes no sense.
