The DCU-MLS trade/signing/transfer watch continues.....
*The full print edition story can be found here.
*I hear from a reliable source that the Norwegian club pursuing Troy Perkins is Valerenga.
*Reports in the Argentine media say Schelotto is considering a return to Argentina after one excellent season in Columbus.
*Reports in Mexico say Borgetti rejected offers in Ukraine and Russia and has been approached by Colorado and Kansas City.

So Goff,
Who is the MLS team interested in Gomez? SJ?
Borgetti in MLS would be a great add. Although I'm not sure if that would be the best way for CO to use a DP slot. It seems like they need someone who can score. KC seems to make more sense but wait until he sees the stadium :-) Welcome to the Mexican Penal league!

As a United fan, I wouldn't be sad to see Schelleto go. Columbus really improved when he was on the field, and they could compete if he had a full season there. Would be really interesting to see Borgetti in the league. I don't think he'll be treated *quite* as bad as Blanco, but it might be close.
Posted by: Shatz / DCUMD | December 12, 2007 9:14 AM
When I hear more about the proposed trade, I'll share it. I'm not holding anything back on this subject. Really.
Gomez to SJ? Not that I've heard. I do know which club that is interested in him, but was told off the record and am obligated to remain silent. Sorry. If anything of substance develops, I am sure other folks will start talking and it will go public.

Valerenga, a former club of MLS' dearest Mamadou Diallo!

Wow, Torres just waltzed right thru...
Is tackling against the rules in the French League?
Posted by: jgildea8 | December 12, 2007 9:28 AM
* Torres 1 - Sculpture Garden 0
* When's Nick Hornby going to write another footy book?
* Don't know anything about Borgetti, but it doesn't seem like his ego will be comfortable playing in front of dozens of fans on a minor league baseball field.
*! Rest up Steve. We're going to need you at your best because the season starts so early. If you get burnt out, we'll demand that your editor be sacked and replaced with someone "Special."

Makes sense for Valerenga and Troy. Looks like their starting keeper, after an uptick in goals allowed last season, is off on a Bosman. The backup (~30 and in the reserves for ~4 years) is still there, but it would seem that Troy would have an excellent shot at being the starter on day one.

Number 4 in that clip looks like Vanney.

Question of the day (yesterday really):
When #4 was beaten by Torres, he raised his hand. What was he appealing?
A. Offside
B. Handball
C. The 1 billion times that internet users will see him get his *$$ handed to him.

When did Liverpool start wearing DC United's jerseys?
Posted by: David | December 12, 2007 9:53 AM
I-270, that is my question exactly. He went pretty quickly from from covering his johnson, to getting pantsed, to waving at something. But what? It's not offsides to fake a pass to a player who's off, is it?

Part of me would think Gomez to New England would make sense:
* They never found a replacement for Clint Dempsey, while Andy Dorman is thought to be bound for England (Leeds, Norwich City, and Stoke City have been mentioned).
* The Revs have plenty of salary cap space. In addition, they have an allocation they can trade in addition to cap relief.
* The Revs have an extremely poor track record of identifying, signing, and getting any decent production out of veteran foreign players from outside the League.
Then again, I can't see DC letting Gomez go to a division rival.

Steve, how does Boswell not having signed a contract extension with MLS affect his trade value? Would United have to pony up extra cash or pics?
Posted by: Chico | December 12, 2007 10:10 AM
If we manage to keep Gomez, keep Moreno, trade Boswell and keep Vanney, sell Perkins and acquire Cannon, and sign Veron, should the team's name be changed to "DC Senior Citizens." Such a group would have to win it all in a hurry, and there would probably be a major rebuilding period in a couple of years.

Can't say I understand the animosity toward Borgetti. From what I've seen he's usually a pretty good apple as far sportsmanship and behavior are concerned.
Whether he's still a top level striker at his age and whether KC or Colorado would figure out how to use him effectively are different questions.
Posted by: garbaggio | December 12, 2007 10:34 AM
I think Benny and Jaime deserve another shot at multiple titles next year.
Top teams build youth behind veterans. Make the moves and add to McTavish, Simms, Burch, Arguez etc. through the draft.

""Can't say I understand the animosity toward Borgetti""
Maybe he's a fine gent in the EPL or whatever league he plays in, but this is about Mexico v US . . . he's as bad a whiner as anyone on that squad . . .
I'm glad he's still their starter as he's worthless against us . . and been used cleanly by Gooch/Conrad/Pope/Insert US defender countless times but always looks for a card/foul

I seem to remember him scoring on us -- over Gooch -- at Azteca in the away 2005 WCQ. I had a pretty good view of it, given I was sitting in about the 15th row. ;-) Nice goal, poor marking.
And don't get me wrong, I despise the Mexico team as much as any US supporter, but on the individual level, Borgetti ranks nowhere near Blanco or O. Sanchez on the hate-o-meter.
Posted by: CMJ | December 12, 2007 11:08 AM
Just looked at Wikipedia's Valerenga site - their #1 GK from last year is out of contract, so it makes sense.

Goff - what kind of time frame are you hearing for completion of either the Perkins transfer or a trade to grab us another keeper?
Posted by: pat | December 12, 2007 11:11 AM
...and Blanco has been great for the league and Fire.
Jared might be hated for Mexico but would be a great club addition for anyone.

Since someone brought up footy gifts for Christmas, I would like to recommend the film: "Mike Basset, England's Manager." Hilarious satire of world football and England's FA.
Here's the premise (tell me if anything sounds familiar): England's football team is getting bounced out of qualifying for an international competition, the manager is sacked, and no one with any kind of resume wants the job. They finally settle for a manager and, by the grace of miraculous help by minnow defeating a large country, do qualify for the tournament. The tournament in question is a World Cup held in Brazil!
Best footy-related film I've ever seen, and one of the funniest of any kind of film ever seen.

Those uni's look like the crap throwback uniforms the NFL trots out every year. How can the Dutch channel William of Orange in the color, yet OM's defense channels the Bills superbowl defense against both the 'Skins and the Cowboys from the 92-93 seasons?

How does one pronounce Kuyt?
Does it rhyme with kite, cute, boot, Voight,

I swear I heard "Couch" yesterday, I-270...it seems to morph.
Schelotto would be a major loss -- I consider him a great find and would hate to see MLS only rent him for a year.

I would think Perkins can't transfer until 1 Jan. since that's when the european winter window opens. They basically have the month of Jan. to complete the transfer.

Regarding Kuyt, I've been told that there's not an exact English equivalent sound. However, Kuyt is pronounced closer to Gout than to Kite.

On the Torres goal, I "stopped tape" on it and when he gets the ball he is more or less inside a perfect circle of 6 opposing players...3 in a triangle very close to him, and 3 more in the box not that far away who all break towards him. Its 1 v 6 to all intents and purposes. and he just goes whoosh, whoosh Goal.
Awesome. And as someone mentioned earlier, he totally powns his guy and in the reverse angle the guy's looking at him mouth agape and he raises his hand as if to call offside or foul play...as in "thats just not fair".
in fairness the guy may be telling his teammates "my bad" because he got spanked so hard but for all the world it looks like he"s crying foul because no way this kid should be in house league he's way too big. Anyone check his ID? Total hilarity.

I have wished death on Borgetti on any number of occasions, but would openly welcome him with Chicago.
Kuijt = COWe-T
ui in Dutch = 'OW'
ij = y (in English there isn't really a 'y' in Dutch) and is a relatively the same as the English except when it's affected by consanant clusters like the ever tricky 'ui'
