Woohoo

The people have spoken. The soccer people, anyway.

Our little online get-together has been voted top blog in the "Best Of U.S. Soccer" end-of-year contest conducted on the USSF Web site.

Thank you for your support!

In 11 short months, we have attracted a passionate and sophisticated audience to become the second most-popular sports blog on The Washington Post Web site (behind the Redskins) and a prime destination for supporters of D.C. United, MLS, the U.S. national team, the international game, women's soccer and colleges. Expect bigger and better things in 2008.

Other "Best Of..." winners (click on the links for information and video highlights):

Soccer Store: Soccer 4 All (Houston)
Soccer Bar: The Globe Pub (Chicago).
Individual Performance: Abby Wambach vs. Sweden.
Team Performance: U.S. men's national team in Gold Cup final, June 24
Fan Atmosphere: USA-Mexico, June 24
Goal (Men): Benny Feilhaber vs. Mexico.
Goal (Women): Abby Wambach vs. Sweden
Assist: Freddy Adu vs. Brazil (under-20s)

Tomorrow, the USSF will name its athletes of the year -- men, women, young male, young female.

Congratulations. A well-deserved honor.

Enjoy the bonus! I'm sure you had that in your contract, right?

Posted by: RK | December 19, 2007 4:27 PM

Worldwide fame and glory . . .

Posted by: delantero | December 19, 2007 4:34 PM

Well dun, lad.

Posted by: WNT fan | December 19, 2007 4:35 PM

Just watched Adu's "Best Assist"-

it wasn't even a pass, he was shooting and it was deflected. It was great effort and skill by Adu, but not a purposeful assist- why would someone vote it as "Best Assist"?

Posted by: mb | December 19, 2007 4:36 PM

"This is one of my daily must-read sites."

Daily? I hit refresh like every 15 minutes of work. What Goff has to say is clearly more important than work.

Posted by: Doze | December 19, 2007 4:37 PM

Congrats, SG! It's definitely deserved.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | December 19, 2007 4:37 PM

Mmmmmm, Five Guys

Posted by: Goff | December 19, 2007 4:45 PM

Woo-Hoo! Congratulations to the Steve and to the regular posters (and voters). No doubt in my mind that SI was deserving!

Goff,

Congratulations!

Any news or stories or time frame for anything related to SuperLiga and CONCACAF Champions League coming soon?

We'll keep you up there in popularity!

To use a phrase deemed noteworthy for 2007:

W00t!

Posted by: B.A. | December 19, 2007 5:05 PM

Dude, you rock. Congratulations.

Now somebody put out an APB for UVA to United. Feilhaber winning that award will send our dear Insider colleague through the roof.

Posted by: Really? Soccer Insider? | December 19, 2007 5:24 PM

Does this mean that Ives has to dance a silly dance while wearing a Washington Post shirt?

Sillier still, might he have to wear a RBNY kit instead?

Regardless, kudos and cheers!

Posted by: Bravo Goff! | December 19, 2007 5:25 PM

WRT to Adu's assist, I guess dribbling out of a corner surrounded by two guys and the touch lines doesn't count anymore.

Posted by: Jacknut | December 19, 2007 5:29 PM

Many of us would now need a twelve-step program to get off your blog. For years, you have been the premier soccer journalist in print edition newspapers. So why wouldn't Goff's blog be the best? Mazel tov.

Posted by: Section 304 | December 19, 2007 5:30 PM

Congratulations on a well-earned honor.
Now, about that vacation.....

Posted by: marksman | December 19, 2007 5:39 PM

Joe Doc,

It does! Haha

Look - I realize it's not going to happen. I just hate to see promising US talent get rooked into the bench anywhere. Bradley is benefitting from playing - why wouldn't Feilhaber?

Posted by: UVA-United | December 19, 2007 5:39 PM

Goff,

Congrats!!! Happy Holidays and I think we should do a SI Happy Hour Celebration!

Posted by: strago | December 19, 2007 5:43 PM

Props to Goff

But Steve, if you can, do try to work more Ray Hudson quotes into your work. Otherwise, I may vote differently next year.

Posted by: d, dc | December 19, 2007 5:44 PM

Posted by: DJC | December 19, 2007 6:19 PM

Is this the same passionate, sophisticated audience whose reading comprehension you doubted earlier today? ;)

I think I voted for Soccer Insider at least a half dozen times.

Posted by: Kim | December 19, 2007 6:22 PM

Goff,

Congrats, the honor is well deserved. You had some tough comp with SBI (BTW - where was the love for DuNord in the voting?).

You should feel very proud of the franchise that you've built here. Great job.

Posted by: George H. | December 19, 2007 6:24 PM

And the insider is very blackberry friendly-that is nice.

Yes on more ray hudson qoutes. I am on the second girlfriend who doesn't gripe about having soccer on if he is announcing.

Congrats

Goff, Congratulaions! Yours really is the best blog out there!

Your blog is the first place I go to get my soccer news. We can always count on you to find out the truth first.

Keep up the great work!

Congratulations Goff, and a thank to you to your management for providing you with the time and resources to make this the best soccer blog in the US....now on to conquer the planet

Posted by: WC | December 19, 2007 7:08 PM

Goff,

As Groucho Marx would have put it, let me be the last to congratulate you. You are now a member of an exclusive club. (Of course, that brings to mind another of Groucho's insights, about how you shouldn't want to belong to any club that would have you for a member.)

Seriously, though, when a short-lived early NASL franchise 40 years ago first got me hooked on the game as a child, nobody could have imagined the Internet. And even if they could, no one would have predicted that it would produce a major phenomenon in soccer journalism that emanates from an American city. I can only hope that people in journalism and business schools are studying your award-winning ways.

Posted by: 22201 | December 19, 2007 7:27 PM

if ever in RIchmond, and when Rainbow doughnuts re-opens, I will treat you to several celebratory treats. Their apple fritter can't be beat and neither can your blog!
Congrats

Posted by: billq | December 19, 2007 7:40 PM

Once more you have risen above the rest.

Congrats to you and to The Washington Post for listening to your pushing for more over the years and for supporting this blog.

We are indeed blessed.

Posted by: seahawkdad | December 19, 2007 7:53 PM

A well deserved honor, Senor Goff. Now, back to business - just how vulnerable is Chelsea's back line with Terry on the shelf for a few weeks?

Posted by: Hmmm | December 19, 2007 7:59 PM

Congrats! This is the first place I look for news in the morning.

Posted by: m | December 19, 2007 8:06 PM

Congrates again. Just a comment. Chelsea's Lampard needs to learn how to be in the interviewing position. People are watching and don't show your tounge and keep your hands down. Damn.

Posted by: td | December 19, 2007 8:12 PM

Congrats Goffer - you deserve it!

Posted by: diego r. | December 19, 2007 8:19 PM

Gofferino, the Goffster, The Big G, G-man, Goff-meister, Goff the Great,...you rock! Seriously, I'm glad that your professionalism, your knowledge, your journalist skills and your refusal to stop investigating and prying has gotten just some of the recognition that you deserve by a wider audience. Kudos to you sir!

P.S. I saw Ben Olsen out at dinner last night. He's moving on those ankles, which is good, but he's still walking gingerly to say the least.

GOLLAAAAZO GOLLAAAAAAAAZOOO GOOOLLAAAAAAAAZOOOO!!

Posted by: Juan-John | December 19, 2007 11:07 PM

Steve,

Awesome! Great honor for you sir! WP, I say give this man a fat bonus! He worked his a$$ off to make this blog as good as it is. All the while maintaining the exceptional quality of his print work! Although we all sometimes have complaints about coverage / lack of or focus of articles etc., there is no doubt, no doubt in anyone's mind that the DC area has the hardest working soccer guy in the biz. We're lucky to have you, Goffster.

So, just to recap.... awesome and for the WP editors etc. BO..NUS!...BO..NUS!...BO..NUS!
Say it with me people.

Goff all the best to clan Goff! Let us know if you need anything for the holidays, ok?

Posted by: AlexandriaDan | December 19, 2007 11:20 PM

Steve,
It's either a labor of love or you're ridiculously good at this and hide your disdain for your job. Either way, we readers win. Thanks for all of your great work.
David

I want to add my own "Mazel Tov," but mostly I want to thank you for your efforts that have made this blog so worthwhile. It makes our lives a little richer. Gracias.

Posted by: Fisch Fry | December 19, 2007 11:55 PM

In the spirit of AlexandriaDan I say, with gusto,

"BO..NUS!...BO..NUS!...BO..NUS!"

Insider Nation has spoken, and has been counted to boot!

Congratulations, and Happy Holidays!

Posted by: DCUInWheaton | December 20, 2007 12:49 AM

Well deserved. SI helps keep this ex-pat up on my beloved DCU, and other USA soccer info that it is difficult to find over here. Thanks for all the hard work.

Posted by: Todd11 | December 20, 2007 3:09 AM

Does this mean the WP will start hanging ads all over the SI and annoying pop-ups will appear every time we click on it? That is the WP on-line standard operating procedure....

Gloomy thoughts aside: well done Goff! Congratulations.

Posted by: Troy | December 20, 2007 4:11 AM

Not quite sure how you beat MLS Rumors, but congratulations nevertheless.

Posted by: Glaucon | December 20, 2007 4:49 AM

I keep telling Cindy that we may not have the numbers of Redskins Insider but it is the quality that matters.

It's on frame and it's in the net! Congrats and keep up the good work.

Posted by: noel | December 20, 2007 7:23 AM

Congrats Steve, well deserved honor. Where's Mastodon Juan saying it was fixed?

Posted by: Chico | December 20, 2007 7:49 AM

I still think "Steve Goff's Soccer Insider" as a radio program (in addition to the blog, of course) on for three hours each day during the morning drive time would not only have saved Washington Post Radio, but single-handedly carried it to the level of international media powerhouse.

Posted by: Ron | December 20, 2007 7:55 AM

Steve,

Thanks for all you do, this bud is for you!!!! Congrats on the award, and keep up the fantastic work.

Posted by: DC United Fan | December 20, 2007 8:25 AM

Go ahead, make my day....

Well done Steve.

Posted by: DirtyHarry | December 20, 2007 8:31 AM

Echo everyone's congrats to you Steve on the blog. Here's a question given the awards list, "will Benny Feilhaber be soccer's equivalent of baseball's Dusty Rhodes?" Recognized for one shining moment but otherwise unmemorable.

Posted by: Orange 14 | December 20, 2007 8:44 AM

I see everyone agreed with my vote. Thanks for blogging me well Goffer. What's so great about Soccer 4 All??? I don't get it.

Posted by: Assistadore | December 20, 2007 8:57 AM

So when's the celebratory Happy Hour? I for one will help make a bonfire in Lot 8 and pitch in for the kegs, if the Grillmaster and Chico show up.

Or we could wuss out and do Finn MacCool's. Soccer Insider Happy Hour anyone?

Posted by: Happy Hour | December 20, 2007 9:36 AM

Congratulations Goff, this is honor is well deserved. And just think, you wanted to be on vacation for this momentous occasion!

Posted by: J-Mart | December 20, 2007 9:49 AM

Well done Steve!

Thanks for having the best soccer blog and not blacklisting a devout FIRE fan.

Keep up the hard work as 2008 should be an exciting year for soccer in the USA!

ACTION ITEMS:
Any word on a new coach for the FIRE?
How about sponsors for DC or Chicago?

PS - since its the holiday season can we all agree to bash LA & NYRB this year?

Posted by: Gilly73 | December 20, 2007 9:52 AM

Orange 14, HEAVENS, I hope not! I love that kid. He's got some real talent. That goal was surely a cracker, and I believe he's got tons and tons more where that came from.

Goffs, kudos to you sir! Your coverage is tops!

Posted by: Matte | December 20, 2007 9:53 AM

"Where's Mastodon Juan saying it was fixed?"

It was a well-deserved honor, and I voted for him. Insider readers should note that Goff and I have this in common: neither of us is a fan of the United.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | December 20, 2007 9:57 AM

Did someone say Happy Hour?

Posted by: Chico | December 20, 2007 10:02 AM

You make three, Senor Chico.

Where are you wanting to do it? And what would it take to get Goff out so we can all buy him celebratory adult beverages?

Posted by: Happy Hour | December 20, 2007 10:09 AM

Congrats Steve. Well deserved.

Posted by: Paul | December 20, 2007 10:14 AM

Did someone say, "Happy Hour?"

I'm in. Problem is, Steve's hours are not Happy Hour-friendly. Perhaps we can steal him away for a lunch?

C'mon Steve, what say you?!

Posted by: Joe Doc | December 20, 2007 10:30 AM

This week's tough with all the Holiday stuff going on. Next Friday would be good. Here's a vote for Kilroy's. They'll have whatever soccer game is being played and have the Johnny Artis Band playing right after HH.

Posted by: Chico | December 20, 2007 10:37 AM

Congrats on Being Named El Numero Uno! In my ever expanding list of soccer blogs to visit each day, I hold this one in high regard as well.

With regard to the Best Men's Goal, while I realize that the impotance of Benny's wonder volley carried enough weight to make it number one, the sheer beauty of Freddy's no look shot from the top corner of the 18 curling into the opposite upper 90 against Poland makes it number one in my book.

Happy Holidays to all.

Posted by: Chris N. | December 20, 2007 11:06 AM

We want a Soccer Insider Happy Hour to celebrate, congratulate, and in addition to Goff, I'd like to meet meet the regulars on here too:

Chest Rockwell
UVA-United
Chico
Section 470 (or similar, forgot the #)
WNT Fan
Juan-John
Mastadon Juan

And many more.

Thanks to Goff and to all.

Posted by: David | December 20, 2007 11:25 AM

Congratulations Mr. Goff. This award just confirms what we all already knew.

Posted by: hoyanick | December 20, 2007 11:45 AM

Goff,

With your permission, can we use the comments section to organize a Happy Hour? Would you grace it with your presence? Say next Friday?

Posted by: Happy Hour | December 20, 2007 12:57 PM

Well done, Mr. Goff. We need a Soccer Insider United jersey to be made in your honor. Do you have any favorite colors? Patterns? Sponsors? I'll be happy to wear it.

Posted by: SSMD | December 20, 2007 5:12 PM

Thanks for the happy hour suggestion! Feel free to organize on the blog, but unfortunately family commitments and alleged vacation time will prevent me from attending. Cheers!
