Big Trade

We've known for weeks that star goalkeeper Joe Cannon was on his way out of Los Angeles. At first, he seemed en route to Washington. Now he's heading home to Northern California. The Galaxy sent him to the Earthquakes today for allocation money.

Nice deal for Yallop and the Quakes, eh?

"Joe is thrilled to be going back home and being part of a team in its first year," Cannon's N.Y.-based agent, Ron Waxman, said.

Lalas once again proofs his how worthless he is as a GM. He managed to make a ba team worse.

I guess that clears up enough space for the Galaxy to sign Figo. Seriously I do not know who is worse at selecting personnel for a sports franchise, Alexi Lalas or Dan Snyder.

Yeah too bad for LA.
Good for Cannon and Yallop.
I'm actually feeling "pritty good" (as Larry David would say) about Zach Wells right now - hope it lasts.

Win some lose some, get Cannon and Goodson goes to Europe. Oh well....

Not sure how Cannon's "Moneyball" stats were calculated, but I'm glad the Quakes were able to get the good value former-Quake from LA and not Donovan. If DCU couldn't get him, there is no other place I'd rather see him play next year than Buck Shaw.

Not all bad for LA, Steve Cronin is a quality keeper. I hope he gets his shot at the starting job.

He is an amazing goalkeeper. Its sad to see him go, but he took up a lot of cap space. I'd feel a little better if Cronin had some more starts under his belt, but in the long run I think its for the best of the team. Hopefully Lalas won't squander the additional money and cap space on some aging past-his-prime veteran.

This is nice. The Galaxy now has a young keeper in the nets. In central defense is a second-year player and a veteran coming off an 18-month suspension for steroid use.

If Joe Cannon was bombarded by a weak defense last year, what will happen to Steve Cronin?

Maybe this is all preparation for an Alexi Lalas comeback? ;)

Carlos Ruiz :)

This game that the Galaxy are playing - it's painful to watch on some levels. They only thing they are selling is Donovan and Beckham. While those two do certainly weigh on the cap for the Galaxy, man I would have NO confidence in Lalas putting together my team. He's got as much an eye for talent as most Mortgage Underwriters did the last few years. He has no track record and really should cede his job function to Cobi Jones.

From a Quakes fan....prit-tee, prit-tee, prit-ee gooooood.

Posted by: EssEff | January 10, 2008 5:07 PM

And now comes Figo.

Lalas must have taken the Cosmos business strategy book when he took over at LA.

Too bad all of you commenting on Lalas' involvement in this trade or any other for that matter are completely off base. He has nothing to do with personnel since LA promoted Paul Bravo to Director of Soccer Operations. Lalas is simply there to sell tickets and market the club. Bravo has been quoted in the press as saying this is the arrangement.

I don't think you can call it a "big trade" when there was one player involved! Better than getting traded for a bag of balls though.

Good for him, Quakes and the G's

He was not rated by all of the G's fans, specially after some comments and horrendus mistakes - yes he did make the odd good save, but he wasn't really convincing (not that the G's defense or team was mostly)

frees up nearly 200k on the salary cap and Cronin gets a shot at #1

burn...

in a weak western conference, I'm now projecting that the Quakes will make the playoffs next year ahead of the Galaxy, Rapids, and RSL

This trade is so bad for the Galaxy it is scary.

Posted by: Bonji | January 10, 2008 6:25 PM

The LA Galaxy are like a car crash inside an explosion going into swamp of radiation nearing a black hole. Watch Becks get nicked, Figo have no legs and Donovan taking the team to a .300 record.

Bravo must be a mole for the Quakes. Shhh!

Oh snap! There goes Mathis too!

Thank goodness the Galaxy fans can switch over to Chivas if they want...

GO QUAKES!

I haven't been impressed with Cannon's display this past season. Even accounting for what he had to work with, I think the Galaxy are better off with the trade.

Oh, okay, who am I kidding, I think Cannon blows and I'm glad he didn't go to DCU. Guess what Joe - You're only as good as your last season, and that means you suck!
