DCU, CONCACAF, El Salvador Updates

*Reports in Bolivia say that Bolivar will play D.C. United in a friendly here in March. Not true. Bolivar did, indeed, inquire about a match, but it's not going to happen because of scheduling and other issues.

*Dates and times are set for DCU's quarterfinal series with Jamaica's Harbour View in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup: March 12 on the road, March 18 at RFK. Click here for all the details.

*As you know, United is preparing to announce several signings in the coming days. The first will likely be Argentine forward Franco Niell.

*From reading the previous thread, you know that El Salvador will likely play the second leg of its World Cup qualifier March 23 against Anguilla in the United States. (Anguilla does not have an adequate field.) I am hearing that RFK Stadium is in discussions with promoters to host the match and, with an enormous Salvadoran population in the Washington area, it would hardly be a home game for Anguilla. The first leg is set for next month in San Salvador.

Not a big home game, but a big payday for Anguilla. Imagine how far that gate could go toward funding soccer on the island.

I had never even heard of an Anguilla national team until this post.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 22, 2008 12:08 PM

Damn, too bad the bolivar game won't happen. I would love to see them come to teh RFK.

And good to see at least most likely we got Niell so far out of our rumored transfers.

Man, ES @ RFK would be great!!! That stadium is going to rock blue and white!!
When was the last time a national team came to play at RFK after the dreaded Nationals ruined the field!

DCU will (hopefully) be at the next club world championship but im getting ahead of myself!

Is Debbie Yow moonlighting as the head of the Anguilla Football Federation?

"Not a big home game, but a big payday for Anguilla. Imagine how far that gate could go toward funding soccer on the island."

The majority of the gate will go to the same place it does on virtually all Carrib Islands.

To the political heads, who then pay the head crime boss Uncle Jack.

Funding rarely makes it to the actual fields, players or youth programs on most of these islands.

A few exceptions, but this is the norm.

Gotti, Capone, would all be proud of the corrupt network Jack has set up to gain and keep support.

Spent my honeymoon on Anguilla, is a fabulous place. I saw a couple dirt cricket fields but can vouch there are no suitable footy fields.

How do player incentives clauses (whether it be per goal or winning titles) and prize money (like winning the reserve league and splitting it among the reserve players) figure into the salary cap? Do they?

Posted by: Dancy | January 22, 2008 12:29 PM

Steven,

Are there any plans to provide TV coverage of the DCU Habour View game from Jamiaca?

Posted by: Nick from Big Soccer | January 22, 2008 12:43 PM

Steve, what about this rumor that Marcello Gallardo is looking to move from PSG to MLS?

http://www.francefootball.fr/FF/breves2008/20080122_081241Dev.html

Rough translation:

"Even though he was at Monday's PSG practice, Marcelo Gallardo may have found an exit. Once coveted by Cruz Azul and San Lorenzo, the Argentine midfielder could continue his career in the United States, according to statements by his agent Juan Berros to Argentine radio. «We've severed Gallardo's contract with PSG. He'll take his career to the United States. Everything's taken care of.»

Modibo -- see my comment on Kalou thread. NYTimes says the Red Bulls are targeting Gallardo, but they have a big problem. DP $$$. We don't have that problem here...

I wanted to comment about the report GOff hit us with, that Pat Noonan is looking at Scandinavia. I heard an interview clip with Taylor Twellman, after the US-Sweden game. He spoke about enjoying playing with Noonan, and then mentined that it might be the last time for a while. And, he wasn't talking about the wait until training camp. I don't think he was thinking baout his own desire toplay in England. Apparently, Twellman suspects Noonan won't be back with the Revs.

DC?! No! Yes, there are a lot of Salvadorans in DC, but there are even more in LA! This is one of my only chances to see my other national team. And definitely one of the only chances to see them win.

NYTimes says the Red Bulls are targeting Gallardo

****************************************

Sorry Fisch, but you need some critical reading classes. NY times SPECULATES that NYRB may be targeting Gallardo. Article here http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/22/sports/soccer/22soccer.htm?_r=1&oref=slogin

And Red Bull interest does not preclude DCU getting in on the act.

There are two huge hurdles for NYRB...lack of a DP slot and salary cap room.

Wouldn't seem all that far-fetched that there might be two, or more, MLS teams trying to deal with Gallardo.

ES in DC ALRIGHT!!! Got to Support My Birth Country!!

DC?! No! Yes, there are a lot of Salvadorans in DC, but there are even more in LA!

Posted by: CACuzcatlan | January 22, 2008 01:20 PM
------------------------------------------

I'm not so sure about that -- the last figures I saw were about 500,000 in the DC metro area and about 500,000 in the LA area, with another 1.5 million spread around the rest of the US. But if you have accurate data, please share!

Go Anguilla!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Hoost | January 22, 2008 1:33 PM

According to this 2004 article, 58% of Salvadorans in the U.S. live in L.A. County. Not the best resource, but thats all I got. I'll see if I can do more research on this topic later today.

I went to the US, El Salvador match up in Foxborough a few years ago, and could have sworn that 58% of Salvadorans in the US lived in Boston then.

Point being, they've got a devoted fan base that will travel regardless where they play.

I had a good time at that game and the Savadoran supporters I met we really cool. A few idiots threw bottles on the field, but I suppose those people can be found in every Country or clubs fans base.

Sorry to interrupt the we-have-more-Salvadoreños-than-you discussion, but this is supposed to be Anguilla's home leg. The match should be played where Anguillan ex-patriates reside.

Has anyone ever met an Anguillan ex-patriate?

Anyone?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | January 22, 2008 1:53 PM

"Anguillan" sounds reptilian. Do they have gills, too?

BTW, anybody know where one can get a good look at the new MLS jerseys for next year? I saw DCU's over on The DCenters. Can't decide if I likey...

Also, The Offside Rules has 2 shots with a bunch of the jerseys, but not all...

Anguilla-El Salvador World Cup qualifier moved to Washington

January 22, 2008

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Anguilla's World Cup qualifier against El Salvador will be played in Washington. D.C., on March 26 because the Caribbean island does not have a stadium that meets FIFA's new requirements on safety, security and quality.

The opener of the home-and-home, total-goals series will be played Feb. 6 in San Salvador. The winner advances to a second-round matchup with Panama.

FIFA previously said the Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, Montserrat and Surinam will not be allowed to host World Cup qualifiers.

Posted by: GoldenChild | January 22, 2008 2:13 PM

Safety, security and quality? That's a frickin' joke. And they forgot altitude (but not all countries) in that statement.

Posted by: Chico | January 22, 2008 2:21 PM

Yes.
All Champions Cup matches will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel.

Posted by: MLSR | January 22, 2008 2:45 PM

Its odd that they ruled Anguilla's home leg could be in the US but they couldn't do the same for the Dominican Republic and others. Imagine a WCQ between PR and DR in say NYC or Giants stadium. It would have been an interesting match up. If held in warm weather the pictures of hot women could have supplied BS threads for years to come:-)!!!

According to the clubs website Joe N. is gone

Anguilla means "eel" in Spanish. According to Wikipedia there are 13,500 Anguillans on Anguilla itself.

So you're not going to find a massive community of Anguillans anywhere, not even in there home country.

I don't know much else about the little island, but unlike TK, I'm not prepared to suggest they are corrupt.

Posted by: garbaggio | January 22, 2008 3:31 PM

I don't think TK is suggesting that Anguillans are corrupt. It's Kickback Jack Warner who is, and he's from Trinidad & Tobago.

Getting my bags of urine ready.

Just surfing and read your take on the Anguilla V El Salvador Qualifier. My partner qualifies through his father and has spent the past week with 7 other from England preparing for the Match. Thay have had expences paid, but are playing for the sheer honour of playing for their home Country. In the late 1950's alot of Anguillans settled in England around the large Trading Estates, their children now qualify. They are taking it seriously and may ruffle a few feather!
