So, how was your turducken?
Nice to be back after two weeks of eating, sleeping and ignoring the laptop. (For the complete Insider Holiday Menu of Champions, jump to the continuation of this thread.)
It doesn't seem I missed much. Clearly, a good time to rest the keyboard. Plenty to pursue this week, most notably who is left on D.C. United's roster.
For now, as we await this weekend's wide release of "There Will Be Blood," a few items to review:
*Former DCU star Marco Etcheverry seems set to become coach of Bolivian club Oriente Petrolero, while former DCU prospect Eliseo Quintanilla has moved from his native El Salvador to Alajuelense in Costa Rica.
*The U.S. women's team will gather tomorrow at Home Depot Center for a week-long training camp before the Four Nations Tournament in Foshan, China, Jan. 16-20 with Canada, Finland and the hosts. A 27-player roster will be reduced to 20 for the trip. Of note: Briana Scurry and Hope Solo are both on the initial roster, but Kate Markgraf, Heather Mitts and Aly Wagner are rehabbing injuries and Kristine Lilly has yet to decide whether to continue through the Olympics or retire. The roster includes UVA's Angela Hucles (70 caps) and Becky Sauerbrunn (no caps), and the Washington area's Joanna Lohman (nine caps) and Ali Kreiger (no caps).
*Several college seniors invited to the MLS combine, which begins Jan. 11 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., have also been called into under-23 camp starting this weekend at Bradenton. I'm checking to see if they will attend both events, but my hunch is that they will remain with Peter Nowak's group. By the way, one of Nowak's assistants: former Fire teammate Lubos Kubik.
*I received a completely random call from former World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Tyrone Booze, who tells me he is working with the Galactics Soccer Club in Clearwater, Fla., and wants to introduce soccer to more African American kids. "I wish soccer was where it is today when I was a kid," he said.
*Not a good New Year's Day for Marcus Hahnemann and Reading:

Hey goff, in the bolivian news they are stating that the deal with Etch' becoming coach didnt come through for Oriente over some money issues. So instead they decided to hire a guy by the name of Buenaventura Ferriera, Buenaventura Ferreira.

The death of Phil O'Donnell is a very sad event indeed. The precision of his shooting is a quality that will be missed in football.
At least his friends, family, and fans can take solace in the notion that he died doing what he loved, and on the hallowed ground that is a football pitch. With any luck, he never saw it coming.
O'Donnell's passing also harkens to my mind the story of a Brazilian journeyman in India whose death may have been one of the most tragic, and at the same, most glorious from a footballing perspective. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiano_Junior
