Ice, Ice, Baby
Welcome back to town, D.C. United boys. Hope you enjoyed your time in warm, sunny Bradenton. Now let's see your fancy footwork on the layer of ice that smothered the Washington area last night! Welcome to our world.
Of course, you are off to Camarillo, Calif. (just north of L.A.) on Friday and we're stuck with this wintry stuff for a few more weeks. Grrr.....
Here's what we know, and it ain't much.
*Remember when DCU officials confirmed last month that Josh Gardner, a former MLSer who played for USL Seattle last year, was starting a trial with the club and vying for a left-side midfield reserve role on the roster? We had not heard a word about him, so I asked the bosses what was going on. Apparently, he suffered an injury and skipped the Florida training camp but will rejoin United in California. So now you know.
*The Koreas, Norte and Sud, are having issues over anthems. Better that than the alternatives like, say, the border.
*Ronaldo is linked with a move to MLS...again. Yawn. As Insider loyalist Brenden in Buenos Aires commented, "He's hurt, he's always hurt, so let's pawn him off on another club. How about... MLS!"
*Here's Bryan Arguez in his Hertha Berlin kit.
*Funny stuff in Norway from reunited teammates Adin Brown and Pat Noonan. Click here to watch the video.

_My German is improving. I had no trouble reading the Hertha Berlin page.
_My Norwegian is great. I understood everything that Brown and Noonan said.
_My Spanish is still poor, but I did understand enough to click on the "Galeria Pit Babes" link.

Ronaldo Linked to MLS. Any word if DC has express some interest Goff? We do have a DP slot to acquire him right?
Posted by: yo its me | February 13, 2008 10:34 AM
Vanilla Ice... wherever did he go. I always liked him. Throught-provoking, original, great dancer.
I pray that Ronaldo never sees a second in an MLS uniform. It would confirm my worst fears that MLS is making the mistakes the NASL made 20 years ago. Right now, the league is buying and selling players like any other league in the world. If MLS starts absorbing injured, aging foreign "stars" well past their prime... ugh, I don't want to think about it.
I need a Snicker's bar...

YEs sadly ronaldo is very injury prone, and has problems with his weight. But IMO him being in the MLS would be awsome still becasue he still has it. He scores when hes good in italy, and when in spain. He states his over weight is a problem because of messed up Thyroid condition, so i think he has more control over that now, but regardless he can still split defenders and shoot, and has that nose for the goal. I really dont see why him coming here would be a problem, and yes he has bad knees but that was a while back. I'd give him a chance.

I don'think MLS is any different than any other league in buying aging stars. A team in the Brazilian league just signed Denilson and AC Milan actually bought Ronaldo for Real Madrid before this season. I think it is all pretty similar.
Posted by: Mike | February 13, 2008 10:42 AM
Also, regarding aging stars...Clint Mathis was signed in the Greek league. Once again, I think it is all relative. Players come, players go. Teams take chances which work out, and other chances are disastrous. Luck is a big part of any game.

Mr Goff - can you please remove that picture of Beckham with the MLS salary link? I'm sick of seeing his mug everytime I get my fix of your blog.
Thanks!

Did anyone watch Fox Footbal Fone-In last night? They had a poll about whether Beckham has ruined his reputation as footballer since he has not conducted any interviews with the American soccer press. After the first commercial, an angry Alexi Lalas called in to complain to Steve and Nick about their perception of the whole Beckham deal. Pretty much Alexi said that their show was not a big enough forum for David Beckham. Callers called in and expressed to Alexi that he was wrong and that the Fox Football Fone-In shows is one of the most important shows for the growth of soccer in America, and that by denying Steve and Nick a chance to interview Beckham, he was doing a disservice to the American soccer community. My take is that Alexi does not want Beckham to go on the show because he fears that Steve and Nick will bombard him with questions that may negatively portray him to the mainstream American public. I 100% agree with Steve and Nick, that Beckham should at least take 10 minutes of his time to explain why he came to the US, what he is trying to prove, and why America should care. It was definitely the most interesting segment I have ever seen of the show. Everyone in this blog should watch the show every Tuesday at 8:00 on the Fox Soccer Channel. Even if you do not like Steve and Nick, they talk about everything soccer in the US, although they do talk a little too much about the EPL. I would love to see Goff on their show as guest one of these days. That would be great.

There's a thread about this article on LAG Big Soccer forum - another complaint about Beckham not giving interviews

The time for of Beckham to explain why he came here is over. If you want to know his answers, use the internet and find the old interviews. The unfortunate fact is that he came here injured and did not play well. However, he has a few more years left on his contract. I can't see that a Beckham interview on the same old subject would do anything other than boost FFF's ratings.
"... and that by denying Steve and Nick a chance to interview Beckham, he was doing a disservice to the American soccer community."
Since when do Steve and Nick represent the American soccer community? I like the show and all, but they're paid by Fox to get good ratings.
By the way, if "Kim from Alexandria" is the same Kim who posts here, nice to see your question on the air.

That article in the LA Times is a self promoting piece of crap by a bitter reporter. If you feel that whining like a little b***h is some form of journalistic quality that article is right up your alley.
Posted by: CD | February 13, 2008 11:24 AM
I like Fox Football Fone-In, I give Nick and Steve props for taking MLS seriously and staying current with the league. But at what point is Beckham obligated to do interviews? He made his statement when he signed his contract. Does he really need to be grilled about his motives? He's brought alot of attention to MLS and that's good enough for me. Now let his game speak for itself.

It's also likely that Becks isn't talking to build a mystique or to allow him to actually have some on-field matters to discuss rather than - how was the Scientology party?

Hey Chico get back to work!!!

I am sincerely glad that David Beckham is not giving interviews. His image is totally over-extended, when compared to the amount of time that he has spent on the field.
Last season, he played in, what, 5 games? Maybe 6? Yet, his press was so over the top that the Insider half-jokingly referred to ESPN as BSPN. Additionally, his face is still plastered on so many soccer-minded websites:
+ Soccernet's USA home has "Beckham Watch"
+ Fox Soccer Channel has Beckham in their Fox Soccer Video
+ The Washington Post's DC United page has Beckham's Picture in their Salary section.
And if you wanted to buy any soccer crap online, there will no doubt be either a picture of his Galaxy jersey or him sporting it.
I still think that Beckham can play and I expect that he will help make the Galaxy a much more formidable opponent than they've been in the last few years. But until he actually starts delivering on the field, he should avoid giving interviews (the only thing he really has control over), so that his name and image don't loose value.
Besides, it's so much nicer not listening to his whiny British voice.

I think they just like to pick on Lalas because he's such a thin-skinned moron whose buttons are easily pushed.
I'm not sure what else Beckham can say at this point? Do we really need to hear him refer to himself that odd way he does and talk in lots of sports cliches? Go back and watch the billion interviews he did on BSPN if you really care to hear him.

Steve and Nick are jokes as far as concerned with regards to MLS. Remember Steve always give MLS a micky mouse s... Crap talk so he has no respect for the MLS. Their show is about EPL and disgrace Chelsea. They even bash about champions league. So, clearly they can't get Beckham to come and boost their show so now they are bashing him.
It is not Beckham but LA OF and the media who wants him perform miracle. I specially don't like how LA PR people present him to the media such having him to wear business suit rather than to let him come as football player.

Goffinho,
Any word on whether FC Barcelona will play ono the East Coast this summer? I heard on ESPN Deportes radio that they plan on spending 2 weeks in the States early august.
FC Barcelona vs DCUnited? anyone?

Any trouth to the rumor that DC United is interested in Harry Kewell? And before you ask, no, I do not have a link.

I can't believe this. When I was sick last week, Steve was posting 4-5 new items daily. Now that I'm healthy and back in front of my computer, we're on some kind of wartime rationing of posts.

Steve and Nick are horrible, Those brits need to get there heads out of EPL.s behind. The EPL is the best league in the world but that gives them no reason to say everything else is crap, they talk bad about other leagues players etc. Were these guys even good players back in thier day. They act like they speak for the American soccer audience. They are not the American soccer Audience, they are the EUrosnobs who think EPL is the only soccer league in the world. I hope beckham gets a free kick with these 2 boozes in the wall. Then they will really know what it means to BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM.
P.S. in case you missed it I don't like beckham but cracking on the guy constantly is ridiculous. BECKHAM IS NOT THE SAVIOR of MLS get that through yout heads steve and nick.

Why the hell aren't there any Americans working on Fox Football Fone-in? Is FSC our soccer channel or what?
I thought we were long beyond the days in US Soccer when someone was presumed to know about the sport simply because of their British accent.
These two worthless chaps certainly should shatter any remnants of that notion. You think they could get a similar job in England?
I'd rather see Wynalda on there, or at least someone with a long history in US soccer, like Gol TV's Hudson.

Oh man. Now I am really ticked that I missed FFF last night (I need to prioritze better next time--going to the polls--for a primary, no less--and the weather?!?!) I was gonna actually tape the 11pm rebroadcast. Set the vcr and everything. Just forgot to hit the final button. Sounds like there some sparks flying. Hope one of you guys youtubed part of the segment for the rest of us...Just my luck.

Now THAT i'll watch. I dont watch that show you guys mention of, i dont got FSC in english, just the one in spanish. I catch the american soccer show GOL TV though, its fairly good covering all american and players, and teams in the US, they also cover players abroad, interview them, etc. They now even have the bolivian Kyle Zenoni on their radar and promised a interview with him soon! That show most likely OWNS that show on FSC. If its true they only talk more on EPL and chelsea. I dunno about you guys but i CANT STAND EPL. Unless it is to watch a little bit of dempsey aka FULHAM USA.
