Morning Kickaround
*I'm told that Columbus has lost interest in Argentine defender-midfielder Matias Almeyda and is in serious pursuit of frontline help. Crew technical director Brian Bliss is in Honduras on a scouting mission. San Jose is also searching for a forward before the season starts. No names available ... at the moment.
*In the last of the four Champions' Cup first-leg matches, we finally have a winner after a bunch of ties: Atlante 2, Saprissa 1. All four series will be decided next week, including Harbour View at D.C. United on Tuesday and Municipal at Houston on Wednesday.
*A Hoyas reunion will take place tonight in the Atlantic when former Georgetown defender Dan Gargan and the Colorado Rapids face Bermuda's national team, whose assistant coach is ex-Hoyas coach Keith Tabatznik. Bermuda, shorthanded at the moment because of club commitments, is preparing for the road leg of its first-round World Cup qualifying series with the Cayman Islands on March 26. Rapids defenders Mike Petke and Pablo Mastroeni are nursing injuries and did not travel with the club.
*Olympic qualifying matches tonight at Home Depot Center: Canada-Haiti, Mexico-Guatemala (8:30 and 11 ET, ESPN Deportes).
*The Euro Champions' League quarterfinal draw today produced these matchups:
-- Arsenal vs. Liverpool
-- Roma vs. Manchester United
-- Schalke vs. Barcelona
-- Fenerbahce vs. Chelsea
Matches will be played April 1-2 and 8-9.
Semifinal pairings (April 22-23 and 29-30):
-- Arsenal/Liverpool vs. Fenerbahce-Chelsea
-- Roma/Man U vs. Schalke/Barcelona
The final is May 21 in Moscow.
*For a good cause, the D.C. area's two USL2 clubs, Crystal Palace USA and Real Maryland, will get together for an April 5 preseason match at Maryland SoccerPlex to benefit the family of Matt DeOrsey, who starred at Middletown High School and Towson University and played for USL Delaware. He died in January from complications of an epileptic seizure. DeOrsey was 30 years old. Tickets are $5. In addition to the benefit game, the DeOrsey Maryland Cup will be awarded to the aggregate winner of all matches between the clubs each season.

1 April Home vs Liverpool in CL
5 April Home vs Liverpool in EPL
8 April Away vs Liverpool in CL
13 April Away vs Manchester United in EPL
Um, wow.

Goff-
Thanks for mentioning the benefit match for Matt DeOrsey. He was teammate of my younger brother at Middletown HS, including the year our school last won the state title (1993). The tragic nature of his death is amplified by the fact that he left behind two children and a pregnant wife. The GM of Crystal Palace Baltimore is another of their teammates from those years, Pete Medd.

Yes, what WNT said/wrote...
Roma - ManU! What a great matchup, although you know that ESPN will put two EPL teams on instead. Happy to see Barca get a non-EPL team.

Chelsea...seriously? How in the heck do they keep ending up with these draws? Is there any way that they will ever NOT draw the easiest side in a competition? Of course after the Barnsley incident we can all hope that they'll go down in flames to the Turkish side!

270, because I didn't know how, and committed it to memory while watching some UEFA game that brought the team up. I trust the British announcers :)
Posted by: RK | March 14, 2008 10:35 AM
It looks like the EPL will be ranked #1 when the UEFA tournaments are done, looking at the coefficients...

"I think Feh-ner-BAHT-je"
That's the Bulgar-Turkic pronunciation. This team is from Istanbul which would have the Bosporo-Turkic pronunciation.
Just kidding!

Beckham flavor? Yuck.

I read what you said about Stuart Holden of Houston. How can he qualify for U-23 when he is becoming a citizen but not for the Men's Nats?
Posted by: Bubbles | March 14, 2008 11:19 AM
i'm going to be in barcelona from april 19-26 so am hoping they make it through and get the first home game in the semis!
Posted by: pat | March 14, 2008 11:27 AM
The article on Bliss' scouting trip mentions he talked to a forward named Jocimar for quite a while, but Bliss didn't want to specifically talk about it.
Would seem to be one possibility.

In my opinion, NO, it seems like this team is still playing way below their potential, which makes watching it frustrating. The only reason to watch is to see the punch that Freddy takes to the gut. The incident occurred about 15 feet in front of the ref and almost right in front of the fourth official. It still amazes me how everyone missed it.

The DeOrsey Maryland Cup is a really wonderful idea. And I'd pay $5 to watch ANY pro or semi-pro game, anywhere. It's great to see the local soccer community rallying around the family.
I won't be able to make up there that day, but I looked to see if there was a way to contribute another way, and I found:
NOTES -- Most initial funds to help DeOrsey's family will go for immediate needs, and there will also be a long-term children's education fund. The family is requesting that all donations be made out to Robert DeOrsey, who is Matt's father. In the memo section, write: FBO Kimberly DeOrsey and children. These donations can be sent to: Kimberly DeOrsey and Children, c/o Robert and Anne DeOrsey, 465 SW Sundance Trail, Port St Lucie, FL 34953.

Well done, MJ.
Off topic: I hear that Kai Kasiguran, the DIII PoY at Messiah College, made the Chicago Fire roster. That's pretty cool.
If you ever get a chance to see Messiah play -- and you can in April at Univ of Md. -- then do so. Their Dutch style is a pleasure to watch.

Whatever happened to Hayden Woodworth, who DC drafted years ago from Messiah and who became a TALISMANIC (thanks Christian Miles) player to United fans until he was dropped?

Bringing up the old post here, but any chance they might give Jamil a trial?

Hayden Woodworth played for the Charlotte Eagles in DII/USL2 for awhile, but I don't think he is there now. He was a kid I was rooting for to make our roster, but it didn't work out.
