Morning Kickaround

Busy day. Let's get to it.

*The most -- or perhaps only -- influential player in the U.S. under-23 national team's disappointing 1-1 tie with unimpressive Cuba in the Olympic qualifying opener was 18-year-old Freddy Adu. Troubling? Yes. A USA-Mexico, do-or-die semifinal sure seems inevitable. Sorry for the cynicism, but between the American performance and the dismal turnout in Tampa (4,259), from a U.S. perspective this event is off to a grim start. Except, of course, for Adu, who scored the goal, hit the post, tested Cuba's goalkeeper repeatedly and just missed on a free kick in the closing minutes. The Americans had a chance to put away this match early and failed. Now they've got to deal with Panama tomorrow and first-place Honduras on Saturday. (Where was Jozy Altidore in the second half? Taken off for precautionary reasons after absorbing a number of tackles.)

"We had enough chances to win the game," Peter Nowak siad. "We have to capitalize on our chances we had in the first half, and also in the second half. As I said, it's the first game and we had a difficult game. We're going to be ready for the next game."

*D.C. United will try its luck in CONCACAF competition tonight against Harbour View in Kingston (8 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel). Seems the Jamaican press did not appreciate United's match preparations. Houston visits Municipal tonight as well (10 p.m., FSC). The Champions' Cup got underway last night with defending champion Pachuca earning a 0-0 tie at Motagua.

*The Insider told you two weeks ago that Costa Rican Argenis Fernandez had signed with New England. Now it's official. We told you last week that former Dallas forward Roberto Mina was going to Gimnasia de Jujuy in Argentina. Now it's official. In case you missed it, Kansas City introduced Claudio Lopez on Monday, the latest in an increasing number of Argentines arriving in MLS. Georgetown-based Smash Soccer, led by Peter Smith and former MLSer Marcelo Carrera, has played a leading role in facilitating a number of acquisitions, beginning with Christian Gomez's signing with DCU in late 2004.

*USA women vs. Denmark in the Algarve Cup final this morning.

*Immigration issues are depleting the player pool in a D.C. area amateur league, more babbling Blatter and a look back at Liverpool's Champions League triumph at Inter Milan.

I agree Freddy was the best on the field for the US, but I thought Dax and Sascha (or however you spell his name - sorry) were pretty good, too. However, Freddy, like the rest of the US attack, was non-existent in the later stages of the first half. Can't let the opposition control the midfield like Cuba did before scoring.

Olympic soccer is important, but as you can see from the crowd, it is not that important! Maybe play in an MLS stadium? dallas? even Lockhart stadium in Ft. Lauderdale would be better than the tampa... much better setting for these types of games... just a thought.

Posted by: dan | March 12, 2008 9:50 AM

I agree with all of the previos posters, but need to say that Robbie Findley is a bum, and so is Barrett. How do you miss a wide open break away??? Still don't know how they made the team. This game should have been 4-1. I'll give credit to Nowak that the football was very good from the US. Good distribution in the second half.

Posted by: DC United Fan | March 12, 2008 9:51 AM

Professional soccer died in Tampa and it's easy to see why.

Using the weekend soccer leagues to round up illegals sounds like a very workable plan, remember we are using the term "illegal" here not anti-anybody.

Posted by: daxy | March 12, 2008 9:52 AM

Why didn't they just play the game in Bradenton? Is it worth it for US Soccer to rent out that stadium for only 4,000?

Posted by: q | March 12, 2008 10:03 AM

I agree with you Steve except for the inevitability of a US-Mexico semi. If the US wins the next two, they win the group...not that it's a given based on their play last night. Freddy was great, McCarty (who your starting lineup commenters always forget) played well. Wouldn't give you two cents for anyone else. The Cuba goal was one of the worst examples of defense you'll ever see. As for the crowd, Tampa should never host a big time event again.

Posted by: BillyBob | March 12, 2008 10:22 AM

4,259
Really? It was that many?

I'm mixed on the Jozy news. I thought there was something wrong after the initial foul, but I'm more worried about him and the rest of the tournament.

Posted by: sitruc | March 12, 2008 10:26 AM

Freddy was the most dynamic, but Dax and Sasha did very well also. The game really seemed to take a positive turn when Sasha entered in the second half and the team switched formations. His distribution and technical ability was what was missing in the first half. Finley didn't do much and I wasn't really impressed with Edu's performance either.

The attendance in Tampa for this event was a discrace. Big surprise that a state the size of Florida can't manage to support a MLS franchise. Agree w/ a previous poster -- Tampa should be taken off the list as hosts of high-profile events. You play that game in RFK and you'd get 17K easy.

Posted by: freddy | March 12, 2008 10:36 AM

One question from the U23's. What the hell was Dax McCarty on? He never stopped hustling from the first whistle to the final whistle. There was one series of play where Cuba overloaded the right side outside the US box and he was running back and fourth covering three guys. Hope he has something left in the tank.

Posted by: donkeyking | March 12, 2008 10:38 AM

Only saw the second half so I missed a bunch, but lets not forget that by the second half Cuba was playing for the tie. 11 men behind the ball and only moving out in obvious CA situations is tough for anyone. That said, I think that the U.S. got stuck in the wrong tactic trying to break the Cubans down. They were trying to make short passes to play someone through. Most of the dangerous chances occured from arial through play and chipped and short crosses from the wings.

I don't think the sky is falling and don't think that Freddie was the only decent player. He stood out yes, but there is a lot of quality on that team.

On the DCU front: Vamos United! Is the game only on PPV? I'm hoping to catch it somewhere. Last thing. How funny was it that the Jamaican media focused on all of our internationals to include "Russian" Dyachenko and Kepne from the Ivory Coast. I guess its impossible to beleive that we've got any decent Americans.

cheers!

Posted by: AlexandriaDan | March 12, 2008 10:52 AM

Agree that Freddy was creative, however Dax was the engine. What a workhorse performance for a player that I have never rated given what I've seen from his MLS time. I also thought that Maurice had his moments, but seemed to disappear @ times. Jozy appeared tired & not quite into the pace of the match. Don't blame Seitz for the goal, the cross went directly under Ianni's foot. I agree with an earlier post that a 3-1 or 4-1 final was possible, but hats off to the disciplined approach by the Cuban side & some nice work by the goalie to preserve the draw.

Posted by: Jim | March 12, 2008 10:57 AM

I'm looking at the match tracker for the US ladies. Who is doing the commentary on that thing? Bizarre.

So, Lloyd subbed off in 35th minute or so. Why? Anybody see it?

Posted by: Matte | March 12, 2008 10:58 AM

The Jamaica Obba Obba-server article really hypes the DC roster. Is it to keep expectations low?

The turnout in Tampa was awful for the Mutiny. What would expect for a midweek Olympic qualifier?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | March 12, 2008 10:59 AM

What a disappointing result. The kids dominated Cuba and Freddy was a monster. Some of the tactical moves baffle me a bit, though. I mean why was Sasha on the bench to begin with? His entry into the game really showed the gap in class between the sides. Dax did a great job too.

Plus why start Jozy alone up top? I tell you what with all that domination in the second half, Jozy nets at least one if he's on the field, but instead we were stuck with Robby "Choke" Findley and Charley "I cant stand up" Davies.

You know what? Iani had a decent showing too, but he should be called out for that lackluster attempt at whatever he was thinking that resulted in the weak/soft Cuban equalizer. Seitz shouldn't have committed so early either. These guys have to learn to stay sharp for the whole 90. Yes we dominated but the other guys will have a chance or two and you have to be sharp.

Good thing there are two more games left. But if they come out like that again, then it will be home early for our guys, yet again.

I think we're failing to give the Cuban GK some credit. I only saw the 2nd half, but he bears some responsiblity for holding us to one goal.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | March 12, 2008 11:20 AM

Last night's match in Tampa is proof conclusive that US Soccer has gone off the rails. The little dictator, Nowak, chose his team poorly and you mean to tell me he took Altidore off because of what? Absorbing a number of tackles!? I'm so glad he's gone from DCU. And the choice of Tampa and that stadium. Who is the genius? Really. Let's put a qualifying tournament in a city that didn't support MLS in a stadium owned by the Redcoat Glazer clan that supports soccer...English soccer. Ick.

Posted by: Patriot | March 12, 2008 11:20 AM

I'd hardly be concerned after the Olympic qualifying match last night. The U.S. created lots of chances and looked exactly like a group that had never played a competitive match together.

[snip]

This is how Italy starts every tournament.

Posted by: Matt | March 12, 2008 11:52 AM

*******************************

Winning this TOURNAMENT is not very important, but winning the semifinal game that would qualify for the Olympics is important.

The problem is that last night's result leaves us tied for 2nd place in our group 2 points behind Honduras. If we qualify for the semifinal our chances of playing Mexico have probably increased (of course they could also stumble and finish 2nd or lower in their group).

That's the scenario that knocked us out of qualifying when we they beat us 4-0 in the semifinal four years ago.

Mexico hasn't played yet but they played five friendlies over the past 2 weeks to prepare so I think they are more likely to play well as a team from the start.

Posted by: garbaggio | March 12, 2008 11:24 AM

We dont defend or hold the ball well. After our goal, Cuba had the ball and we couldnt take it away. Thats not a good sign.

I think we need better coaches and a different mentality and approach.
I see the same trend in the U20, U23 and national team.

We should play in an MLS stadium, that I agree...

Posted by: Tim | March 12, 2008 11:28 AM

I realize they had many opportunities to finish but...

The offsides that drew back a US goal was questionable. There was a player offsides, but he was decidedly moving away from the play and not involved in it. I don't recall whose header it was that tapped the ball into the goal, but when the ball was played forward, he was in line with the last defender.

a little more sharpness in front of the goal and it could have been 4 or 5 to one. My biggest concern out of last night was Kamani Hill getting caught upfield too much, and Spector will be at right back in the knockout round.

This is how Italy starts every tournament.

Just a comment on Tampa - I went down there for my bachelor party to see US v Ecuador last March, and US Soccer AND the stadium completely botched the entire game. They didn't have enough ticket windows open, and closed the only will-call windows, resulting in literally thousands of people (many like me who'd already bought tickets online) standing in line for 2 hours. Probably half of the 30,000 fans were late in to the game, and we only saw the second half. Don't know if that affected attendance for this game, but I would never again in my life attend a game in Tampa and I know there were thousands of fans just as pissed as we were.

Posted by: Jayboy | March 12, 2008 12:42 PM

Matt,

I'm glad I'm not the only person on the blagowebs that's not worried about the U-23s. Watching that match, I found myself wondering what the forwards were thinking when they had a chance on goal.

The kids are alright. Once they remember that scoring goals takes more than reaching the 18 and knocking on the ball, you'll see three-point results.

That said, I'd rather see Kamani Hill convert to RM than RWB or RB.

Posted by: B.A. | March 12, 2008 12:43 PM

Great result for the women's national team. I was concerned about bringing in Pia as coach, but based on the results from this tournament (and on the updates from our Insider colleague, WNT) I'm on board.

I hope Pia establishes a legacy. Her emphasis on "playing through the midfield" highlights the need for skillful players who can receive and play the ball under pressure. That's a challenge for those of us who coach youth soccer -- demand skill and creativity from our players, even at the expense of losing a game.

Posted by: Joe Doc | March 12, 2008 12:49 PM

Yeah, I'm wondering what Troy saw out there today. From matchtracker, it sounded like US were getting dispossessed in the midfield a lot today. Pia subbed Lloyd out very early -- wondering if Lloyd was dinged up or Pia saw something she really didn't like.

They're getting shots from a lot of players, which sounds much more multi-dimensional than last summer.

Troy -- should we look for #13 from Denmark in the WPS? Sounded like she was trouble all day.

Afraid I have to agree with the first poster re Kljestan. Dominent U.S. possession in the 2nd half was due to Cuba packing 10 of their 11 on defense for the full 45. McCarty and Adu seemed to be the only ones with a clue about breaking it down. Sasha botched more than he created.

Posted by: tri-village | March 12, 2008 2:33 PM

Freddy looked great. Been nice and probably a different result last night if Robbie Rodgers had made the team. Need more good ball handlers besides Adu and Robbie is one of the best from what I have seen in this age group. I hope they thump Panama. Use the same formation the U-20's did and put in the same players and we will be just fine.

No it's not a problem, the vast majority of them are here because they need to be. They can't find the work they need to feed their families in their home countries, so they come here, work like dogs, and mail the money they make back home so that their families can eat and their kids can go to school.

The problem is that it's so hard for them to come here legally. If it wasn't such a difficult (impossible for most without connections established here, they might be terrorists you understand), time-consuming (4+ years is typical) and expensive (immigration lawyers ain't cheap), they would happily come here legally. They'd bring their kids and families and 99% of them would be model citizens that this country would/should be proud to have. Unless of course were a nation of cowardly, selfish xenephobes... sometimes I wonder.

If a law is unjust it's is our duty as human beings of conscience to protest against it, and if it is within our power, to break it whenever possible.

Or maybe they went over to Maykel Galindo's house for a nice bbq.

With so many of the Cuban players gone, maybe we will have a better shot at winning the group!

We need a break after the performance last night!

Any lawyers out there? Can I use the time stamp as an alibi?

just back in lisbon after 3 plus hours in car (I was driving so couldn't post before). the danes put up a good match, although not as good as the first half of the norway game.

some of my game posts didn't get through but there were some frightful lapses by our defenders as the danes resorted to british style long balls. at least four led to dangerous opportunities. fortunately all failed. I should mention that the US had a number of good opportunities that were the result of strong build-up and passing; legitimate opportunities in other words, rather than hoping for a defender's brain cramp.

the 4 (?) defensive lapses aside, the US controlled the game. yes, they were dispossessed several times, but more through trying to put that one more aggressive move rather than finding the open player. the ladies were less fluid today. osbourne was creative and very aggressive, most of the rest stayed in their spots and played conservatively.

here's an odd note: after the game, the danish team were awarded the "fair play" award, a two-foot silver trophy that dwarfed the championship award. The danish federation later gave my son and I a bunch of keyrings, refrigerator magnets, etc. proclaiming the danes the fair play winners. the award was actually given by the danish football federation!

as usual, our ladies were pure class afterward. my son got a jersey and a pair of cleats.

where was I? oh yeah, football: abby wambach was her usual dominating self. i didn't click on the photo link above, but she did have a spectacular collision with the danish keeper (one of the few players as strong as abby). osbourne collided with her too.

there were several danish players who should be recruited to the new league, but even more norwegians. that italian striker too (i saw the other games on tape and she is the real deal). there is also one icelandic player who showed amazing skill. i believe she plays for a norwegian club (actually, I think almost all the icelanders play for norwegian or danish clubs). question is, of course, will salaries be worth relocating like that. for some of the younger players (I believe denmark's #9 is about 20) it might be worth a shot...

from a whole tournament perspective, the US looked really good. the rest of the world has gotten better, and there is much more depth in the national teams, but the US is still the class of the field (OK, we put Germany up there too based on recent spectacular performances).

also, no apparent drama. the ladies appear to adore Pia and the other swedes on staff.

one other thing about algarve: big thanks to the portuguese for staging it, but how about some organization? I attended two of the four matches in person. for the first, they switched the stadium at the last minute. for the final -- the freaking FINAL -- they moved the start up an hour without telling anyone. I saw the other matches on dvd, so i don't know if those got screwed up too.

for lusoamericans reading this: don't be offended. i LOVE portugal, portuguese people, portuguese culture, the food, the wine, all of it. Just sayin', a little head's up to major changes might be nice.

Hello United (and Talon) fans,

I'm a Screaming Eagles ticket holder unable to attend the March 18th match. I have one ticket in Row 5 in Section 132 of the Nest (closest section to the field). Will part with it for $22 (Face is $28). Because the game is a week away, I need payment via PayPal (pay to: cakeguy@aol.com). Send me an email if interested and I will ship it out immediately upon payment.

Thanks.

DCU likely starters tonight:

Wells; Namoff, Martinez, Peralta, Burch; Quaranta, Simms, Gallardo, Fred; Moreno, Emilio

What do I expect:

Our last opening game in CONCACAF saw a 4-1 win at Olimpia, who (with all due respect to Harbour View) are a stronger opponent. However, the team we fielded on the day was a more familiar group; the only really new player that saw significant action in that game was Emilio. Tonight, we come in with no less than 4 players that are brand new, and a 5th (Quaranta) that only a couple of the guys have played with before. Thus, I do not expect the goal blitz and utter domination that we saw last year.

Harbour View will offer us a challenge in terms of speed and physicality, judging from how they played in '05 and the fact that many of the players are the same. Our backs will have to be aware of balls over the top; luckily, Martinez is supposed to have great speed (something we haven't had in a defender in a very long time). I'm sure they're going to try to impose themselves in midfield, so expect Gallardo and Fred to receive some heavy challenges. Hopefully, we can get some service into Emilio or catch them on the break with Fred making diagonal runs from the left into the heart of their defense. I have high hopes for Fred to match or exceed his scoring total from last season, as he had many chances in the 1st half of the year but only found his shooting boots about halfway through.

Having watched the Motagua-Pachuca game, I really think we've been given a great path to the final. Motagua's finishing made the Olympic team look sharp, and Pachuca looked like a shadow of last year's. The fact is that a team of Motagua's average ability could well have easily put 4 past Calero in the second half. If we deliver on our end of the deal, things are setting up well.

Womens' Olympics -- The German Weltmeisters lost again today, so losses to both Denmark and Norway in Algarve. That's pretty shocking.

China's abysmal performance (0-3 before taking a consolation game on penalties) may be even noteworthy.

There may be employment opportunities in the Tampa Bay area (and vice versa) for people with such organizational skills.

Come to think of it, San Antonio is another place that is hospitable to people with such organizational "genius".

Notice the world ILLEGALS.
Murder is illegal. Kidnapping, rape. Are those a problem?? Why, yes, yes they are.
