Ain't No Sunshine
Bill Withers wrote it. Everyone from the Neville Brothers to Ziggy Marley and Sting covered it.
On the subject of great music, please take five and read this profile of Dave Brubeck that appeared in The Post on Sunday.
Where is this going? Not sure really. But it was, after all, a gloomy day, no sunshine in sight, and by the time you read this Monday morning, the grayness will probably still be with us. Perhaps soon, a lovely day. Besides, I had to find an excuse to work Withers and Brubeck into cyberspace's most cultured soccer blog.
On the brighter side.....
*The USA women's team defeated Mexico, 3-1, to clinch first place in group play and set up a semifinal with Costa Rica on Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET) for an Olympic berth. Canada will meet Mexico in the other match (9:30). I'll go with a 4-0 USA victory and a 2-1 Canada win in overtime.
*Madness, Part I: Houston 3, Dallas 3, capping a weekend that included 22 goals in five matches in MLS.
*Madness, Part II: Atletico Madrid 6, Almeria 3. "It was a strange match, including the score," Atletico Manager Javier Aguirre confirmed. Simao and Aguero scored two each, Almeria lost two players to red cards. From the Atletico Web site, after the Madrid side scored two goals in the first five minutes:
"The populated stands rubbed their eyes in disbelief, dreaming of a calm afternoon of enjoyment. But this wasn't to be the case because Almeria, far from falling apart after such a fateful beginning, leaned on their habitual portfolio to get back into the match to the general surprise of the fans."
*American lad Oguchi Onyewu scores a late game-winner for Belgian leader Standard Liege.
*Cardiff City joins Portsmouth in the FA Cup final after extinguishing Barnsley's extraordinary run.
*Still having trouble finding the new Dick's Sporting Goods commercial featuring Olsen, Gomez, Ching and Davino, but here is the making of the ad:
And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know.....

Brubeck is great, true, but Paul Desmond remains one of the only sax players I recognize by ear. (And he wrote "Take Five," too.)

Is the Goff drunk?

The Ben Olsen add plays regularly on Altitude, Denver's sports network. I watched it repeatedly during the Rapid's match on mlsnet.tv the other night. The add is very funny, epecially the ending.

Nice to see the Houston D give up e goals. Hopefully, it's a sign of things to come. ;)

Houston's backup GK was basically a sieve. Totally got caught in no-man's land on the first goal, the second one went right thru him, and the third one was a breakaway so not really his fault. He did make a couple of good saves late in the game. I think Houston's tying goal should be GotW. A great blast from the top of the penalty area into the roof of the net.
What's up with Holden? I don't think he's played in either of their games.

Seeing Dave Brubeck live at Newport a couple years ago was a transcendent moment. The guy is truly an American Icon.

Madness, Part I: Houston 3, Dallas 3, capping a weekend that included 22 goals in five matches in MLS.
Goff - "(This is blasphemy! This is) Madness!"
Cameron - "Madness...? This is HOUSTON!"

To Bjorn:
"I know, I know..." is the intense, if repetitive, lyric that serves as the bridge in Bill Withers' immortal "Ain't No Sunshine".
To Goff:
"habitual portfolio" from the La Liga match report was enough to qualify the Insider as cyberspace's most cultured Soccer blog. And of course, the more people who know of or learn a bit about Dave Brubeck, the better!!

The Neville Brothers? I had no idea the two English footballers could sing.
"I love to feel the rain in the summertime
I love to feel the rain on my face
I love to feel the rain in the summertime
I love to feel the rain on my face..."

Dave Brubeck made regular visits to my college campus, although mostly we got the "big bands" of the day: Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, etc. But Brubeck was special. How many jazz artists get taught by classical composers (Darius Milhaud)?
Posted by: Hedbal | April 7, 2008 9:04 AM
The kids may not dig it, but keep the culture coming, my friend. I love Brubeck. I've seen him twice and met him after one of his shows. Absolutely one of the nicest and most gracious individuals you'll ever encounter.
Great win, lads. Keep 'em coming.

Ben Olsen is a rank amateur.

A little more flavor from the US-Mex womens game, sounds like it was a great atmosphere. Canada v. Mexico for the Olympic berth Wednesday in front of 22,000 crazed fans.

Terrible cell phone video from Juarez but check out the crowd. Chivas should be in WPS.

So the lesson from the commercial is that you can buy a Beckham jersey at Dick's but not a Ching?

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine!
You make me happy when skies are gray!
You'll never know dear, how much I love you,
So please, don't take my sunshine away!
F. U. Ref!!!

In the Olsen ad, what is the real relation of the family? Just actors, or any real relation? Anyone know?

Goff got scooped on the final score of the FCD/Houston game. I read that on mlsnet.com last night!!!!

More than that. Saves and corners count as 3 and 2 points, respectively, for the attacking team.

Olsen's wife is in the ad.

I don't get the kid though. They make it appear like it's Ben's boy?
Maybe his nephew?
Can you actually pick up jerseys at dicks?
I don't believe.

Holden picked up an ankle sprain in Houston's final exhibition game and has been out of both the CCC and MLS games since. He was still listed as doubtful for Sunday's game, so apparently he still has a ways to go.

Holden went full 90 versus Revs on opening day

Won a free steak dinner from Chef T when I was working at Harry's Taproom in Arlington a few years back. I correctly guessed "Blue Rondo al Turk" in a song recognition challenge. Chef T was a huge jazz fan (so am I).
