DCU Notes and Quotes
*Team captain Jaime Moreno , who injured a hamstring last month, rates his fitness level at 90 percent and Coach Tom Soehn is encouraged by his progress after playing him 45 minutes Saturday.
"I see the confidence to be able to do that [run hard] the last couple days," Soehn said. "It's a long journey back from an injury, but he keeps making steps in the right direction."
*Santino Quaranta has a small cast on his right hand after having it stepped on early in Saturday's match with Toronto.
"A guy stepped on me. It was an accident," he said. "It swelled up bad. I put tape on at halftime, and when I took it off after the game, I really knew something was wrong. It's just a hassle, but it doesn't hurt. I went to see the doctor yesterday before training and they told me it was broken. I told them to do [the cast] as small as possible because I am not coming off the field."
Quaranta's cast, which will be covered with thin padding during tomorrow night's match against Pachuca at RFK, brought back memories of Josh Gros's seemingly constant bandaged wrists and hands.
"The joke is that Goody [trainer Brian Goodstein] has to have someone in a cast throughout the year," Quaranta said with a laugh. "It makes him feel better about himself."
The broken hand is the latest in a series of injuries during Quaranta's career. Reflecting on his physical problems over the years, he said: "I had a broken head, that was the biggest thing."
As for the Pachuca match and the two-goal aggregate deficit, Quaranta said, "I'd rather have it this way than being up."
Huh?
"Well, not down two, but when you know you have to win and have to score, man, it's just a different mentality going forward and attacking from the whole team and not sitting back and watching. You go out and enjoy it."
Attendance tomorrow night? At the moment, it's looking like 15,000 plus, but the walk-up could have an impact.
Lots more to share about the Pachuca game in Wednesday's print editions, which are available online late tonight.

Goffster, Whats up with the jersey sponsorship? The plain United uni's are begging for some logo action on the front.
Posted by: 204 | April 8, 2008 1:15 PM
I like plain. It shows class.
Posted by: The Jim | April 8, 2008 1:21 PM
if it shows class it should follow FC Barcelona and have a non-profit organization sponsor. If not, hurry up and put the logo so we can have a full jersey.
Posted by: JLMAN | April 8, 2008 1:31 PM
While I am eager to see DCU sign a sponsor in order to generate additional reenue that can be used on the team, I'll never understand the fascination that people have with wanting to have a jersey with a sponsor. A plain jersey is considerably better than one that is a billboard for a product.
Moe than that, it's getting pretty silly that every thread has to have a "Goff, any word on a jersey sponsor?" post in it. Geez, I'm sure Goff will provide information as he hears it -- he already knows there is an interest in finding out about a sponsor when it happens; you don't have to ask.

While it's a little early to fully evaluate his play, Tino's attitude and behavior have been nothing but positive so far. It's good to see a guy like Tino, who has so much talent, finally shrug off his demons and just set about going to work. And his attitude can be summed up in one word: hungry. I think its great, we've needed some hungry players on this team for the last couple flameouts - er, seasons.

Again folks, if you feel naked without a large corporate advertisement on the front of your clothing, here's what you do:
- pick your favorite product and download the logo
- print it on a large Avery label
- stick it to the front of your jersey
- be happy

Just to update you on the jersey sponsor....
As I reported a few weeks ago, DCU has been in talks with a foreign automaker. A deal is not imminent. There are other potential sponsors in the mix. These are complex negotiations that are difficult and time-consuming. I'll let ya know when, and if, progress is made.
Posted by: Goff | April 8, 2008 2:09 PM
If an auto company is indeed our sponsor, I would like to see their seats used on our bench a la the premiership. That would be sweet.
Oh, but not for the away bench.

My answer--It isn't that I want to wear a big VW on my chest. My two reasons I want to know:
1) As mentioned earlier, the current shirt is rather bland, and
2) Main reason: I buy a replica shirt to wear the same-looking shirt as the players, which won't be true if I buy a shirt now and they change it by adding the sponsor's logo.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 8, 2008 2:56 PM

Man, Arsenal's flank play is really making the Reds look bad right now. In addition to the Wells impression on Diaby's goal, the Gunners could have had as many as 2 more by now. Looks like Rafa has his hands full at the moment...

Nice goal from Liverpool.
Posted by: sitruc | April 8, 2008 3:16 PM
Oh my Lord was that a clinical header!
Posted by: RK | April 8, 2008 3:16 PM
I take back my earlier comment. That was a gorgeous set-up and header by Hyppia. Crouch drew 2 men and Senderos was off contemplating his navel somewhere... Very Nice!
Posted by: Throwin | April 8, 2008 3:17 PM
You know, that's what MLS really doesn't have enough of. Granted Gerrard missed three metres high, but he has the confidence to take that 15 metre snap shot, AND it has serious pace AND a decent percentage of those shots either threaten the goal or go in. It stretches the D and creates gaps for runners. I freely acknowledge that there aren't a lot of players in the world who can do that, but name one in MLS outside of Beckham. With his left foot, I wouldn't mind seeing Burch do that a couple of times a game (and IIRC, he hit one of those last year...).
Posted by: Throwin | April 8, 2008 3:26 PM
Well, a 6-pack of Sam Adams Black Lager and 47 minutes of high intensity football. I'd buy that for a dollar!
OK, I'm old, and my pop culture references are dated. So sue me. :-)

We still have that extra DP slot...

Gorgeous goals in this match. Just gorgeous.
Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | April 8, 2008 4:13 PM
While I like certain Americans playing for Fulham, I wouldn't use a DP slot on any of them.
Posted by: Bootsy | April 8, 2008 4:16 PM
RE: the 7 to-be-relegated Americans (including Derby's Yanks). There's more $ in the soda pop championship than in MLS and possibilities to remain the in EPL with other teams. So I don't think that we'll see the relegated Americans, except perhaps for Feilhaber, in MLS.

Ives, there is a rummor out there on Terra Deportes that MLS is offering JUAN ROMAN RIQUELME $15,000,000 for him to come over and play for the league. Any insights??

Posted by: Throwin
You say that as if he could use his right. I've seen one touch, one, this year from Burch's right foot. I thought I saw 2 but rewinding and slo-mo showed it was left. I know MLS sees this and it seemed that Pachuca was catching on quickly. I won't let my 12y/o son get away with that, why can a pro?

Courageous referee.

This match is certainly worth the extra time I'll have to work to make up for watching it.
Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | April 8, 2008 4:30 PM
As a DCU fan I'm neutral on this game, but man, that was on Okaluja level penalty. He was already on the way down, and certainly embellished it. I simply don't think you can make that call at that time and place...

Posted by: RK | April 8, 2008 4:36 PM
Nicely done, and that puts paid to the account. With Arsenal pouring forward that was almost inevitable.
Posted by: Throwin | April 8, 2008 4:36 PM
For the Gunners to come up with no silverware this year is pathetic. Time to open up the wallets in the summer! Stan Kroenke - it's time for your wife's Wal-Mart money to be spent!
Posted by: Virginia Blue Blood | April 8, 2008 4:38 PM
Wow. That's all to say. Wow. 3 strikes in the last 13 minutes, not a dead fish amoung all the goals (even the penalty was high quality), and two teams playing at the very highest level. This match was so good my beer got warm, and that's saying something. Wenger must be ready to commit murder.
Posted by: Throwin | April 8, 2008 4:39 PM
Sweet game this afternoon, one of the perks of being a stay at home dad.
Posted by: Dadryan. | April 8, 2008 4:39 PM
I remeber the commentator last week saying how he had seen softer penalties given in regards to Hleb being taken down in the box. That penalty was certainly softer than the on at the Emirates.
Posted by: Red Devil | April 8, 2008 4:43 PM
I think I scared my neighbors with all my screaming after Theo's run. Great game.
Posted by: Mike | April 8, 2008 4:44 PM
what a bad call for that PK, completely less than the pk against HLEB last week and nothing gets called.
Is it me or does adebayor get 1-2 easy goals per game and seems to miss them.
Posted by: Arsenal Robbed | April 8, 2008 4:47 PM
I may be wrong, but believe Adebayor has only scored one goal since he cut his hair. o_0
Posted by: Red Devil | April 8, 2008 4:51 PM
The fix was totally in on this semi. I don't know why the FA doesn't want Arsenal in there but it's clear as day. Like Juventus favortism clear. a penalty 30 seconds after Arsenal gains the momentum? For something that weak?
Posted by: DCAustinite | April 8, 2008 4:52 PM
Phantom penalty...no contact in the box. Boo hiss Liverpool. I guess they are the lesser of 2 evils...
Posted by: strago | April 8, 2008 4:53 PM
Stevie G was invisiable until the PK, which came from his mistake for Arsenal to score their second goal. Other than that all the goals were qualities. Toure, oh boy.
Posted by: td | April 8, 2008 4:56 PM
I think you mean UEFA, not the FA DCAustinite.

I could see why it might have looked like a penalty. Toure was falling clumsily. From certain angles it probably looked impossible for him to avoid bringing down the Liverpool player, but it appears he didn't have much to do with it.

All the drama that has been going with Liverpool owners, perhaps George G cares the team and maybe Tom H doesn't because I don't really see him there at the game.
Anyone knows whether our DCU owners come to the home game most of the time? Never see a glimps of them on TV.

Posted by: Dadryan. | April 8, 2008 11:31 PM
I'm with you, Fisch Fry. My immediate reaction -- which his what the ref had to draw on -- was, "PK!"
Replays, however, showed otherwise.
The guy I feel bad for is Fabregas. He misses stopping the header at the post because he let his guard down for a moment, then he gets out paced on the fourth goal because the guy who beat him had been on the field all of 10 minutes. Cesc didn't have a chance.
