DCU Update
Francis Doe, a 22-year-old Liberian forward who had two goals in eight appearances for the Red Bulls last year, is on trial with United. The club has two open roster spots.
GM Dave Kasper also tells me he'll know more about midfielder Justin Moose's status today or tomorrow. Moose, who signed a developmental contract with DCU but was not going to see any regular playing time, has been in Vancouver with the USL's Whitecaps. Former DCU forward Nicholas Addlery started in Vancouver's 1-0 victory over Montreal over the weekend. Goalie Jay Nolly, another ex-United player, did not play.

Signing youth is always good. I've heard that Doe has speed, but how are his ball skills? I guess we'll find out soon.

Doe impressed me last year. He was good enough for Arena to move Altidore into midfield for a couple of matches. With Moreno's propensity to pick up injuries, Doe could provide some valuable depth up front.

Do we really knead this guy? Let's just hope he rises to the occasion...

i may have only seen the games where Doe scored for NY last year but i was very impressed with him and thought he did very well.
i was suprised they didn't keep him, but i think he will definitely end up at United if he is as good as he showed in the games i saw last season

He was born and bread to be a striker. Wheat and see if he matures and flours in this new setting. Let's hope that at a developmental salary he doesn't sour on the dough they're paying him and decides it's not worth the pain , or he'll be leaven us behind for more bread elsewhere.

"Doe impressed me last year. He was good enough for Arena to move Altidore into midfield for a couple of matches."
Just to make something crystal-clear: Doe played up front because not because he displaced Jozy, but because injuries to every left-sided midfielder and defender forced Arena to do something to cover that half of the field.
Doe didn't have much to do with it. Had he not been on the team, John Wolyniec would have been playing up top, and Jozy still would have been moved to midfield. Jozy > (>>>>>>) Doe > (slightly) Wolyniec.
Doe is all speed, not much skill or heart (and heart is why I rate Woly only a slightly worse alternative). He's not worth any more than $30k a year, and will play garbage minutes. Might as well have kept Kpene as go for Doe.

Doe seems to me like Kpene, but with the ability to put the ball between the posts. He won't move Emilio to the bench. But it's nice to have a different dimension to bring off the bench.

In all seriousness, I respect DC and what they've done through the years but I think you made a huge mistake letting Chritian Gomez go. Maybe he is not as big a star as Gallardo but you know what you get from him for MLS, you know he is MLS caliber. So I really think this is the year for us to take over and get the Atlantic Cup and more important the MLS Cup

MetroStars96, what are the current NY street prices for the stuff you're smoking?
Posted by: kung fu eagle grip | April 14, 2008 2:46 PM
Only in MLS... The thought of dc united taking this kid is so rediculous that most people would be shocked if they knew anything about soccer. I know a lot about this game and I am not at all shocked by this. This is Major League Soccer. It is very apparent that people here don't care about how good of a player you are. They care about how big, fast, and NOT AMERICAN you are.

@MetroStars96
Yes - but for the equivalent cap hit - we get a guy who's a higher caliber in terms of credentials than Gomez - and Colorado's Designated Player spot for 3 years (or something like that).
Also, 2 games into your 2008 campaign and I'd say your team looks FAR from convincing at present. I'm not discrediting their potential - it's clearly there - and the coaching is a big upgrade. However, your organization still has some turmoil in the front-office and Jozy will not be here after the beginning of August after he misses other time for USMNT in June and Olympics. Not to mention Reyna's bound to get hurt soon and without JPA the team looks suspect.

I think that time will tell and I really feel this is our year, it has to happen SOMETIME! Your backline is too slow and you are suspect to the counterattack, vs pachuca i understood why but against RSL! Come on...Red Bulls will take the series against DC this year.
Posted by: MetroStars96 | April 14, 2008 3:24 PM
Oh ronaldo, you're forgetting a huge piece, and that is how AFFORDABLE you are. I think we all like big names and stars, but we have a thing called a cap, and before you get confused, no it's not what you win with everytime you get called up to play for your country.
Posted by: Kosh | April 14, 2008 3:27 PM
Metrostars96: you do know that only 2 of our 4 starting defenders were playing defense against RSL right? Burch usually plays left back and was in midfield and Mediate usually doesn't play at all (and I am starting to wish they'd keep it that way)
And Let us not forget Gonzalo Martinez, who is extremely fast. So by adding this all up, yea we seemed to have no speed, but that's because they were playing in different positions due to what may be a substantial coaching blunder (which happens)

No offense to the players, but it seems like there is a "DCU Reject" team created every year. Good thing we can't meet them in the US Open Cup.
