Martinez Injured and DCU Notes
*DCU defender Gonzalo Martinez felt tightness in his hamstring at training yesterday, did not work out today and will be a game-time decision tomorrow. I would not count on him starting against Columbus, but we'll see.
*Ailing midfielder Ben Olsen is heading to Delaware today to be examined by a U.S. national team doctor. "They call him the guru," Olsen said. He and DCU trainer Brian Goodstein "are taking a road trip up I-95. Maybe a cup of joe at the Chesapeake House, a hot dog at Nathan's."
*Coach Tom Soehn, on the Pope (the big man, not the former defender) being in town: "I hope he comes to the game. We could use it."
*Soehn, on the team recovering from the 4-0 loss: "As professionals, any time you feel like you've disappointed your teammates or yourself, you are excited to get back out and prove what you are about. That tests the true character of a team -- how they respond from things like this. What I can sense so far is they are just hungry to get back out and prove to themselves that they are better."
*Reserve division match Friday at 10 a.m. at the DCU training grounds. Admission is free.
Just for the fun of it, Copa Libertadores highlights from Estudiantes (Veron, remember him?) vs. Cuenca:

Ummm, so we give one of our starters the last game off for the express purpose of resting him and avoiding injury -- and he gets injured anyway?
I hope this team is not jinxed this year ...

Martinez injured...urrrrrrrrr. please don't do this to us.

ben needs to stop at daffy deli in newark, de. plus you get to take a detour around the toll at the md/de border!

With Martinez out, one would assume McTavish to centerback for Martinez and Quaranta to right mid for McTavish. Big question is whether Quaranta can defend Rogers on the Crew's left flank.

I'll be there for the reserves match.....

Excellent opportunity for McTavish and the team. They need to take it to Columbus on Thursday.

Martinez has pulled up holding his right groin/adductor muscle during each of the last 2 games in which he's played . Each time it's been toward the end of the game or the half, so I've been worried about that. Now there's the hammy...oh, boy! I hate seeing him out of the lineup. Hopefully the injury is minor.

For many of us, the former defender IS the big man.

No need to worry we will stick it on Columbus either way !st of all Schelotto is gonna "P" his pants as soon as ke sees Gallardo just as hi did fro the River Boca Clasicos !! Martinez is a great defender but we have good kids the to cover for him so i think we should be ok!!

Steve, please tell us McTavish is moving back and not Mediate. I think Mediate is a decent role player for us, but he is not a central defender.
Quaranta (or anyone they put out at right midfield) will have to help out with Rogers, but the real task of stopping him is preventing the 1v1 isolations. That means the whole team has to be aware of where he is (since he and Gaven switch wings). Barring a flawless performance in that regard, Namoff and/or Burch will have to stand him up or at least force him down the wing for a cross (which is in our favor, as compared to letting him dribble in). It will also behoove us to make sure to keep possession as much as possible, since Schelotto will surely be looking for quick balls down the wings as their primary means of countering.
In attack, we should look for Moreno or Fred to run at O'Rourke. He doesn't look like he's ever going to stop giving away dangerous free kicks and penalties, so we should take advantage.

martinez will be a huge loss for us he is the best player on the team right now from what i have seen

That's a great quote from Tommy.

Has anyone ever asked Gallardo if DC United could whack his relegation bound PSG?

Martinez out? In the words of Bender..."We're boned!"
It's gotta be McTavish in there with him, right? I hope. I think McT can batton down the hatches, just not sure about him going forward, like Martinez. Man what a start to the year, eh?
Goffinho sorry I could not make the chat, but looking forward to the transcipt.

For those (like me) who don't know -- where are the DCU training grounds?
Posted by: edgeonyou | April 16, 2008 2:59 PM
Does the game tomorrow start at 8 or 8:30? I see mixed accounts.
Posted by: jlm | April 16, 2008 3:06 PM
let's start McTavish in central defense with Peralta and someone else at right midfield - Quaranta?
Posted by: diego r. | April 16, 2008 3:15 PM
training grounds are @ like 18th and East Capitol..

Best place for Hot Dogs is Ann's Dairy Queen at Marley Station on Ritchie Hwy.

No, it's the Dog House on Route 40 in Delaware just south of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. And they'll be so close!
Re Martinez, I'm with Beaker: very worrying to watch Martinez pull up a bit hobbled against Pachuca and now this. I thought it might have been a groin or a hamstring. Goff, do you know if this is all new or something Martinez has been worrying for a while?

Re Estudiantes/Cuenca: I'm a defender, and pretty understanding about own goals, but ouch, that one was ugly.
-Wish we could fill RFK like that.

You won't find DC United there unless they're touring Eastern High School.
Try 21st and C St NE - I think that's it. The fields are to the northeast of the intersection.

Sounds pretty bad for Benny...I hope he is coming back. They sound pretty desperate to find some hope on that ankle. His USMNT duty is in jeopardy too.

Good call with 21st and C. Here's the map from the team website. Totally cool to watch Reserve matches there. Not only is it free, but you're also so close that you can really hear the players talking to each other and the ref.
I'll see you guys there.
