Matchday: DCU at RSL
Greetings from Salt Lake City.
Gorgeous spring day on the Wasatch Front: deep blue sky, snow-capped mountains, temps around 60, light breeze. While I, nor anyone else, will miss Rice-Eccles' artificial turf or excessive capacity, you can't beat the view from the upper levels of the hilltop stadium on the University of Utah campus.
As I hope to do on each road trip, I'll try to pass along a dining tip. In Kansas City, we went with Free State Brewing in Lawrence and Gates downtown. Here, I offer Settebello's fabulous brick-oven thin pizza.
Okay, tonight's match. As Insider loyalists already know, Comcast SportsNet will join the game in progress around 9:30 p.m. Plenty of radio options to follow the match in its entirety: WWWT-1500, WWWT-107.7-FM, WWWB-820, WFED-1050.
Thomas Rongen will handle TV color commentary, once again wearing a red bow tie. The stylish Dutchman! He tells me that he's headed to Portugal tomorrow for the U.S. under-20 national team's three-game tournament. He also says the team will travel to England next month and face club competition, though the U.S. squad will have new faces. Of note: Alfredo Morales, a new discovery, was pointed out to Rongen by his Hertha Berlin teammate, Bryan Arguez. Morales is from a military family and has apparently spent most of his years in Germany.
Big changes to the DCU lineup tonight amid a brutal stretch of matches: Carvallo for Wells, Mediate for Martinez, Dyachenko for Gallardo, Burch for Quaranta. So the formation will be a 3-4-3 with Carvallo in goal, Namoff, Peralta and Mediate in the back, Simms behind Dyachenko, Burch on the left, McTavish on the right, Fred, Emilio and Moreno across the top.
As usual, this is this place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.
Enjoy!

Glad to see Tommy is not afraid to use the roster this year. Letting Carvallo get his feet wet early and used to this league will help the team as the season progresses.
Dyachenko earned the start tonight. He has played very well this season; his poor play last year made me wonder if DCU made a mistake trading a first rounder to retain his services.
Go DCU

I like it. Past history says we can't seem to catch a break in RSL, so why not give new things a try and hope for a little luck? If we lose, we lose, it's still early. If we win great! But best of all, we're rested. Also, with this many new guys eager to crack the lineup, we will not have a post-pachuca loss slump.
Posted by: DCAustinite | April 12, 2008 8:32 PM
Someone tell Dyachenko that Real Salt Lake is a Mexican team. I don't remember Rod scoring too much in MLS yet but he has knocked a couple home against Club America and Pachuca!
Posted by: garbaggio | April 12, 2008 8:34 PM
Nolly last year, Carvallo this year.....Salt Lake is where DCU reserve goalies go to get a first team match.
Posted by: Oliver | April 12, 2008 8:38 PM
Does anyone know where online I might be able to get a a feed to watch the game??
Posted by: Alan | April 12, 2008 8:53 PM
Martinez looked like he came up a little sore after a tackle late in the second half of Pachuca, maybe groin? Anybody else notice? Anyway, good he gets a rest. And Fred, Emilio, Moreno . . . it's, like, so 2007!
Posted by: dcca | April 12, 2008 8:55 PM
@ Oliver
At least from preliminary reports, Carvello is close to being on par with Wells (the usual starter)

Umm, mlslive.tv has a DirecTV error message up on screen for our game?? WTF?
Posted by: Ummm | April 12, 2008 9:04 PM
Ummm: same here. I hope this doesn't have to do with the Comcast delay. I'll be listening on the radio in the meantime...
Posted by: Andy | April 12, 2008 9:06 PM
Obviously we are supposed to call cusomer service at extension 721
Posted by: wilhelm | April 12, 2008 9:06 PM
WFED does not seem to be carrying this game (or at least its Internet stream isn't). However, the WWWT link seems to work:
Posted by: tri-village | April 12, 2008 9:06 PM
anybody find out about the stream from MLS TV?
Posted by: ARGH! | April 12, 2008 9:11 PM
Uggg. The WWWT feed announcer is killing me. I cant listen to him anymore.
Posted by: Steve | April 12, 2008 9:13 PM
Listening on the radio is almost as painful as watching/listening to the commentary on FSC...when will DirectKick be up?????
Posted by: Andy | April 12, 2008 9:13 PM
I, too, am experiencing the stupid error on mlslive.tv
Don't worry though I'll be calling ext. 721 until they fix it, once I find out what ext. 721 is.

Nice to see MLSTV and DK up to their antics again. I should have my head examined for believing that things will change each year. I can't get the game on either source and I'm in PA and therefore cannot get the radio call. This really, really pisses me off.
Goats at CowDaters is quite the match though.

As posted on the previews thread that Pachuca is playing against Monterrey, Pachuca no 2 scored a beatiful header goal.
While we DCU fans and SI insiders are very greatful for TV covrage and Sir Goff's effort to bring all the games to us I am, however, very dissapointed with Comcast for cutting the game. And with DK blocked out because of Comcast we get nothing but Radio which I can not bring myself to listen to.

Nice way to join the game on Comcast; with a RSL goal. I love the football field.

GAME ON!!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | April 12, 2008 9:23 PM
Steve: agreed.
Carvallo looked clueless on that goal, by the way. I would think it's a good wake up call for him. Now let's score 4 and get out of Salt Lake.
Posted by: Andy | April 12, 2008 9:25 PM
The problem with tonight's radio/Internet feed is that it sounds as if it is coming to us over a telephone line. It really sounds muffled.
Also, do I understand that Limarzi is in a studio back East, cutting into the broadcast to provide updates on other games? If so, who is doing the play-by-play from SLC?
Posted by: tri-village | April 12, 2008 9:25 PM
every body, game is on the comcast. How could they scored? Oh come on......DC. Stupid American football line

seriously, isn't pointy ball season over?
Posted by: -K | April 12, 2008 9:30 PM
Do they have a new stadium opening soon? Not sure what is worse... looking at this field or having to watch the DC defense.
Posted by: N | April 12, 2008 9:32 PM
I'm hoping for some big halftime subs, especially Gallardo and Martinez. Obviously, we're not organized in the midfield or the back. Let's go, United.

They're building their new stadium now. It looks pretty nice. There's got to be another place to play rather than the Uni. of Utah's football stadium. It's awful.
Nice attempt by McTavish.

So....dc waits until we play on astroturf to play our backup gk from peru?? Uhh...hello? He's never playd on that surface. I've said it before n I'll say it again. Simpson is a crap gk coach n should be fired. Our gk's throughout the years have been brave but technically flawed. If I'm DC's gk coach I insist that wells starts tonight and carvallo makes his debut on grass

sims hits fred on the quick slant- that'll move the chains. (cut to cheerleaders in bikinis) (TV timeout) And we're back. Real Salt Lake doesn't like what they see and calls timeout. I know we might be a little fatigued from Wednesday against Pachuca, but this is outrageous. We're obviously more talented than RSL, and we can blame the field conditions all we want, but this is absurd.
Posted by: Andy | April 12, 2008 9:55 PM
soehn doesn't look too concerned. he probably just wants this farce to get over with without any injuries to the squad.
what a disgrace.
AT LEAST PAINT OVER THE FRICKING LINES!!!
some RSL fans need to break in and paint the field at night.
Posted by: mb | April 12, 2008 9:55 PM
why is that every time i want to see goal highlights i missed during the game (this game and the last LA Galaxy game), the halftime show consists of highlights not from the game, not from around the MLS, not even from the game of soccer, but from some other sport entirely?
Posted by: mb | April 12, 2008 9:59 PM

didn't some player die in eastern europe from hitting a sign that was too close to the field?
at rice-eccles, there is a vertical wall 3 feet from the playing field. thats why esky double padded his headgear when he played for RSL.

the environment does allow for interesting goal celebrations or protests. I would carry both a yellow and white flag in my shorts. you could kick a celebratory field goal or lineup and run a goal line dive play. then everyone do a bunch of chest bumps. or carry a little bag of grass seed and spread it around.
bottom line: lots of options here.
Posted by: mb | April 12, 2008 10:29 PM
DC do not look interested in this game at all. No sense of where the their teammates are and no interest from Soehn in changing the tactics.

Gag Me With a Spoon
. . . or some other implement, after that horrific display DCU just showed in their 4-0 loss at Real Salt Lake.
That fourth goal, Peralta had an "Oh [Bleep]" look right before Findley -- who scored the two goals against DCU last year -- found net.
What is it about this team, that fields its backup goalkeeper in BOTH 2007 AND 2008 in Salt Lake only to lose?!?
Posted by: Juan-John | April 12, 2008 11:00 PM
So the team from west coast called real salt lake was really looking forward to play against a top team that has built pretty good reputation around the globe and beaten and they celebrate like won the champoinship game. Mean whie mr Soehn does know how to play like losers
Posted by: pk | April 12, 2008 11:05 PM

F-ing despicable.
Peralta hung Carvallo out to dry on that Findley goal.
Other than the second goal, Carvallo was not at fauly in any way whatsoever.
Beckerman's laser should merit goal of the week.
Carvallo should be tearing his backs new poop chutes. He has every right be pissed, left out like that on his league debut.
This is first time Peralta looked like total crap. You cannot blame the field. His positioning were at issue. The turf affects RSL just as much. Hell, if the field were that much of an advantage, RSL would not have been bottom-dwellers in the West.
I win, in how many games? Sure they did that same thing last year and got better, but they are doing this with a (IMHO) vastly superior team...
I might have to dust off my "Fire the Coach" t-shirt...

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | April 12, 2008 11:33 PM
Gotta forget this one. Weak effort by the back line. Up front, DCU attackers should've tried long distance shots all night, since the turf would have dangerouly bounced the ball and do what they couldn't.
Agreed Carvallo should not have started this night.
Indeed disgraceful to televise professional soccer being played on outdated football turf with all the field markings. That Harbour View FC field looking pretty good in comparison!

DCU has been brutal on the road in its games atKansas City, Pachuca, and RSL.......just not offense at all in any of these games.
Posted by: Admiral Boom | April 12, 2008 11:59 PM
Where to start...
Everyone complaining about RSL's field:
The fact of the matter is that this is the best stadium available for RSL until their new one is completed. The only reason I can think of to hear these complaints is that you are all very, very new to watching MLS on TV. Your complaints are much more irritating than football lines.
On the game:
Playing a 343 away seemed very risky to me. I was hoping that there had been a mistake and that we were actually using a 442 (with those players, it would have gone Carvallo; Namoff, McTavish, Peralta, Burch; Mediate, Simms, Dyachenko, Fred; Moreno, Emilio). As much as we're harping on Carvallo (who absolutely should have stopped the 2nd goal but was left out to dry on the others), my problem is trying a new-ish system for our players, one of whom has very limited experience playing as a defender. RSL treats their games with us as the biggest game of the season, and we treat our games with them like reserve fixtures, and it showed.
Yes, both teams played on the same surface, but one plays on it all the time and one does not. That showed time and again, as our players seemed confused left and right while theirs seemed to have a decent idea on what kind of bounces they'd get. Peralta in particular misjudged the ball too many times to count.
The offense lacked direction, and didn't really create anything. Moreno didn't get the ball enough, Emilio seemed disinterested, and things didn't improve when we brought on Quaranta. Fred seemed at least to have the effort and some ideas, but no one was on the same page with him.
I said yesterday that this game needed to be taken very seriously. With all the stumbling blocks set up for us (RSL gets up for us, on weird surface, CCC hangover, short gap between games), anything short of a good effort was going to end badly. We then turned in a very bad effort, and lost 4-0. Frankly, it's what we deserved.
Ratings (everyone starts with a 5):

Namoff - 4
Peralta - 2
Mediate - 3.5
McTavish - 4.5
Simms - 2.5
Dyachenko - 4

Never read so much whining from a bunch of "fans" making excuses about the field, like DC would have won if only it had been played on grass. Get over it. Your team got their butts handed to them on a platter. It could easily have been 6-0. RSL was the better team. They have been playing well all year, and just couldn't finish their numerous chances. Tonight they finished most of their chances and their defense was rock solid.

US beats Canada 6-5 in PKs. What a game I never saw...

I hope you aren't referring to me. I never made any excuses on behalf of the players. I just made fun of the field.

==========================================
I had totally forgotten about this game. For some reason I thought it was on Sunday. I'll bet the crowd was pro-Canada. BTW, Mexico only beat Costa Rica by one goal in the other game.
The U.S. Soccer report on this game mentions that tickets for the upcoming friendlies in Birmingham and Cary start at $18. Will this be the case for Estadio RFK, too?
Did anyone get to see the Freedom play Penn State at the Soccerplex last night? What was the outcome?
