Midday Kickaround

*Local organizers are close to finalizing a May 30 friendly between El Salvador and Guatemala at Estadio RFK. Both teams are preparing for the second round of World Cup qualifying in June: El Salvador vs. Panama and Guatemala vs. St. Lucia. The Salvadorans drew more than 22,000 at RFK last month for a WC qualifier against Anguilla.

*George Mason University's soccer hall of fame inductees are midfielder Joseph Addo (Ghana 1996 Olympic team, MLS), defender Doug Bradley (son of former Patriots coach Gordon Bradley, a current member) and ex-coach Richard Broad (1976-84). They will join, among others, Gordon Bradley, Chicago Fire Coach Denis Hamlett and veteran MLS defender Ritchie Kotschau.

*DCU midfielder Ben Olsen will see another specialist next week, this one in North Carolina, to examine his ailing left ankle.

*United officials are hopeful Liberian forward Francis Doe, who has agreed to a senior roster deal with the club, will receive his work visa in time for next week's match at Colorado.

*Devon McTavish (foot), Gonzalo Peralta (knee) and Domenic Mediate (hamstring) sat out today's training session.

[update]

*DCU was approached about a friendly with Boca Juniors this summer, but could not find a date that would work for both clubs.

Does anyone know if United have managed to get a SOUL in training or a visa or a developmental contract at least?

WHAT ABOUT BOCA GOFF?????

Posted by: CHRIS | April 22, 2008 1:12 PM

IF A HAD BOCA NEWS, I WOULD REPORT IT. WHY ARE WE YELLING?

Posted by: GOFF | April 22, 2008 1:14 PM

How long does it take to get a work visa usually? Is he worth the final roster spot?

Posted by: The Jim | April 22, 2008 1:21 PM

The return call I was awaiting for came in: DCU was approached about a Boca friendly, but it's not going to happen.

Posted by: Goff | April 22, 2008 1:22 PM

sorry and thank you i wasnt yelling btw

to bad that would sell out rfk easily

Posted by: chris | April 22, 2008 1:27 PM

As I said in a separate thread yesterday, GMU should name its stadium after Gordon Bradley.

Does GMU have a women's soccer hall of fame? If not, why not? They have a national championship (the only one in the '80s not to go to the Albicelestes of Chapel Hill), several other trips to the Final Four, and numerous All-Americans to their name, albeit none of the above in the past decade or more.

Is there anyone associated with the current GMU men's or women's program who is likely to be a candidate for anyone's hall of fame in the future? The younger Adu, perhaps, if he progresses?

Posted by: tri-village | April 22, 2008 1:31 PM

Boca could want to play a friendly against another team? say Atletico Madrid? They are both going to be in this side of the world, why not play in good old RFK!

Any chance Benny is coming to Durham ("The City of Medicine")?

Posted by: AlecW81 | April 22, 2008 1:55 PM

I think Riqulme was even here for that game, it was the most boring game ever. I still can't believe DC was able to get a draw. OUR TEAM was pathetic in those days. Boca was just as bad

Posted by: dc fan | April 22, 2008 1:57 PM

I guess it's fair, Ben went up 95 one way, he should go back the other. Was he in a soft cast or brace Thursday?

Posted by: Section 130 | April 22, 2008 1:59 PM

ES drew 22K, I wonder how many GT would draw... Upper bowl would have to be opened up for sure.

Posted by: Dougg | April 22, 2008 2:02 PM

So if McTavish, Peralta and Mediate all aren't ready for the next game (unlikely, but...) who is the next defender in a four man line? Kirk-Namoff-Martinez-Burch? Namoff-P. Carroll-Martinez-Burch? Or do we go three in the back with Simms and Stratford in midfield?

Posted by: bluemeanies | April 22, 2008 2:19 PM

Thats too bad about Boca not being able to play us. They stated that in the article they were going to play in the RFK, do you know if they will play anyone else beyond us during their US tour? Will they even come to the Nations Captial even?

Posted by: Bolivian DC Fan | April 22, 2008 2:42 PM

Oh man, Boca would be awesome. I hope they make it happen some other time. That's cool that at least they were interested.

Posted by: Sean G | April 22, 2008 2:44 PM

Correction i meant to say they were going to play in Washington DC not RFK.

Posted by: Bolivian DC Fan | April 22, 2008 2:47 PM

The game against boca was played in the middle of summer in what felt like 120 degrees. Besides the Chivas USA game a few years ago, it was the hottest i've ever been at RFK. Pretty sure I got heat stroke.

Posted by: BarraFanatico | April 22, 2008 2:54 PM

I'll be the first to prognosticate:
1) Benny's laid up for the season. I hate the idea of it and I hope he's able to get something done to return to the game, but I just have a feeling it won't happen this year.

2) Doe will start for Emilio the first game he's available. Even if it's just a half to get his legs under him, it's a signal. Emilio needs to think about how much he wants that starting position. Emilio started poorly last year, too, so I'm not writing him off, but he needs to start producing.

Posted by: Beaker | April 22, 2008 2:56 PM

Anyone watching that red team versus that blue team in that European soccer tournament thing? They really need more creative and varied uniforms in Europe. They're so plain and boring unlike MLS.

//if only BS weren't down.

Posted by: sitruc | April 22, 2008 3:04 PM

I'm with Beaker on the Benny thing, and it is an ominous sign for the season, I'm afraid. If Ben Olsen can't fight through an injury, you know its bad. He's as tough as Josh Gros, aka as tough as the skin on a cowboy's a$$.

We had better find a leader, quick, who can grab this team by the shirt and pull it forward. I don't know if Simms is tempermentally suited to it, but if I were Tommy, I'd be having the "to whom much is given, much is asked" talk with the Panther right now.

Posted by: grotus | April 22, 2008 3:05 PM

I think sitting Emilio to send a message would be a good thing. He knows that if he wants that DP slot next year we got from the Rapids or if he wants a healthy contract in Mexico or elsewhere, he needs to step up big time.

Posted by: Darth Hater | April 22, 2008 3:07 PM

sitruc: the colors are appropriate because half the EPL teams are nicknamed "Reds" and half are nicknamed "Blues." The third half are nicknamed "Whites."

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | April 22, 2008 3:12 PM

If we really were good enough or had the desire to "play Boca"
a step in the right direction would have been advancing in the CCC.
Good to see DC is doing something to light a fire under Emilio's lazy bum.
Go Doe!
Shoulda just signed Cezar(sp?). I guess everyone's expectations about #11 were much higher.
Does Cech just keep adding on to his head gear?
Soon it'll be a Football helmet...

Posted by: Dadryan | April 22, 2008 3:17 PM

I-270,

Three halves? Do you work for a subprime lender? Ha ha. You're right though..

Back to bidnizz...

Goff mentioned awhile back that Benny's ankle was "bone rubbing against bone." That means his cartilage is gone. Cartilage has very little to none resident blood flow, which is why it takes forever for cartilage to heal. It worst cases (like a friend of mine) the cartilage almost dies and you must essentially not use the joint for months and months. Any stress or sports and the cartilage could die completely and then you are proper F-ed.

I am betting Benny is facing this worst case scenario. He went from team doc, to at least specialists, national team doc, etc. You can't grow cartilage in a lab. Neither can you transplant from a cadaver.

KUYT scores!

Posted by: Erick | April 22, 2008 3:27 PM

Posted by: Dadryan | April 22, 2008 3:28 PM

Como que no tienen fecha en el calendario? Como?

Maricas.

Posted by: Diego M. | April 22, 2008 3:29 PM

Diego,

Come now. Don't be so harsh on us. The summer is when DCU's season is. It is difficult for us to find time to throw in exhibition games during the summer.

Now, maybe if you promised to play, that would be another story...

Posted by: bribri | April 22, 2008 3:35 PM

What's the over/under on whether Olsen will hang up his boots this year? I get the feeling we're going to see him retire.

Posted by: bristol | April 22, 2008 3:39 PM

I too think Benny's days are numbered. :(

He's had ankle problems ever since his trip to Forest and has never fully recovered. At least he's had as good of a soccer career as any American could have hoped for... MLS Cups, International tournaments, Rookie of the Year, World Cup appearances, Olympic games.

I do hold out hope that he's back this season, but I don't know how much longer he's going to be able to keep playing.

Posted by: Diego M. | April 22, 2008 3:48 PM

I can't believe that there has not yet been a single recommendation for a barbecue joint for Olsen to check out. Are people trying to imply that the food along I-95 north of Baltimore is better than that in Carolina?

Posted by: tri-village | April 22, 2008 4:16 PM

I stopped at a truck stop/strip club along I-95 five years ago. I wouldn't recommend it.

Diego=
I would hook you up with whatever it takes to get you on the field, only I'd feel bad when your doughey out-of-shape self keeled over after jogging out to the center circle.

Posted by: bribri | April 22, 2008 4:29 PM

Liverpool is about to close out a rather uninspiring 1-0 over Chelski. Should of done better at home, but both teams looked off. Drogba and Torres both slow and without their normal killer touch.

Posted by: jgildea | April 22, 2008 4:34 PM

Posted by: sitruc | April 22, 2008 4:36 PM

jgildea, the evil laugh I just had when I read your last two comments really scared the people who just entered the room.

Posted by: sitruc | April 22, 2008 4:42 PM

So, Chelsea gets an undeserved tie, as Riise really botches his clearance. Why he didn't just try to bring it down I don't know. What I"m wondering is why there 5 minutes of added time?

Also, what's all this talk of Boca coming (or not coming) to DC? Is Fulham letting him go? We could use his goals.

Posted by: Fisch Fry | April 22, 2008 4:43 PM

Five minutes, Dougie Fresh.

I have just legislation to outlaw the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes.

Five minutes....

Posted by: 5 minutes | April 22, 2008 4:46 PM

Unbelieveable!
Oh, and Sitruc... You are an a**, but that was funny.
So much for Riise being the strong experienced sub off the bench. Fire Rafa!

Posted by: jgildea | April 22, 2008 4:46 PM

I am not.

Posted by: A** | April 22, 2008 4:48 PM

I wasn't sure about the 5 minutes either. I thought that was a pretty boring match and stopped paying attention to the time so it would go by faster. Maybe the officials did as well. As much as I dislike Chelsea, I didn't mind seeing that happen since I knew it would screw up all of the match reports that were completed after the first goal was scored.

Posted by: sitruc | April 22, 2008 4:49 PM

Oh goodie. Tommy Smith's penetrating analysis.

Posted by: BSPN | April 22, 2008 4:50 PM

I'd rather watch United-Boca in 90-degree, high-humidity RFK than Liverpool-Chelsea any day. England's two-year domination of the CL semifinals is not producing high-quality soccer - just ugly stalemates. I pray Barça wins this year. They'll need all the help they can get.

Posted by: Trauma | April 22, 2008 4:55 PM

USA vs Argentina tix arrived today!

Posted by: yahoooooo!!! | April 22, 2008 5:00 PM

Really doesn't look good for Olsen at all. Bone on bone is beyond bad, its irreparable. Looks like DCU will be shopping for a real outside mid during the August transfer.

Goff - if Olsen retires, how does not affect the salary cap? Especially if he never suits up this year?

Posted by: griffin1108 | April 22, 2008 5:01 PM

I think it was only four extra minutes but everyones jaws were laying on the floor and the clock just kept running. It was after all the end of the game and everyone was a little stunned.
that makes me feel a little better about Peralta's own goal. Riise sure knows how to crap the bed don't he.
Dang Gingers...

Posted by: Dadryan | April 22, 2008 5:10 PM

I was at the DCU-Boca game, at RFK in high humidity and it was much worse than that game, believe me.

Posted by: Red Devil | April 22, 2008 5:12 PM

The news was bad for Benny leading up to this new direction he is taking on the I-95. I think at best we can hope is that he can be back for playoffs. Even if he is a sub, he will bring that fighting spirit that is infectious, and what we love best about him. I think the worse case scenario is that he is heading for a front office job...

Posted by: Alan | April 22, 2008 5:34 PM

Off the wall question of the week:

Is Francis Doe related to former Liberian leader Samuel Doe?

Posted by: SportzNut21 | April 22, 2008 8:19 PM

I wish our DCU strikers could finish like Riise!

Remember, in Liverpool they break in to the players mansions for kicks, to nick a few things (cars, jewels, cash)...imagine what they will do to Riise'e house, or his Aston Martin.

I need to fold up and heirloom my Riise shirt...I fear the guy has done in his Liverpool career. It will be a long time before the Kop forgives that one.
