Morning Kickaround

*Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is none too pleased about Liverpool Manager Rafael Benitez's accusations.

"Perhaps he is looking for something to destabilize us before the match. If he wants me to stay on my feet, maybe he should tell his defenders to stop hitting me."

Today's the day: The second leg of the Champions League semifinal between the English rivals at Stamford Bridge (2:30 p.m. ESPN2), with the winner facing Manchester United in the May 21 final in Moscow.

Maybe this is what Benitez was talking about:

*CONCACAF will decide its club champion tonight (9:30 p.m. Fox Soccer Channel) when Saprissa visits Pachuca following a 1-1 tie in the first leg in Costa Rica.

*On a sobering note, click here for the Gordon Bradley obituary. If you would like to make a contribution in his name, please click here and be sure to specify the Gordon Bradley Scholarship Endowment.

*Newly signed Francis Doe has received his work visa and is eligible to play for D.C. United this weekend at Colorado. ... That mystery Frenchman who is in talks with United about overseeing, among other things, the club's youth development? Still no name, but I hear he has connections with French club AS Nancy.

I hope Saprissa pulls off the upset tonight in Mexico. On the other hand which team would represent CONCACAF best in the World CLub Cup...tough decision.

Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool.

1st............oh wait.

Posted by: The Jim | April 30, 2008 10:00 AM

A French team called Nancy... that's just too easy.

Posted by: sitruc | April 30, 2008 10:02 AM

... so easy, in fact, that you and I were aiming for the same joke...

Posted by: The AMT | April 30, 2008 10:10 AM

With this talk about a new staffer from France, perhaps the team's shirt sponsor has shifted from VW to Perrier...

I like it. "Perrier: The official beverage of Barra Brava."

Posted by: Joe Doc | April 30, 2008 10:12 AM

I was just looking at the MLS standings on the WaPo website and noticed that a column for 'Games Played' was missing.

That column would make the standings much easier to digest considering the absurd scheduling practices of the MLS... just a thought

Gallardo up 47-40% now. Strange how Guevara tends to lead in the evenings...

AS Nancy coaches from wikipedia:
Georges Huart (1979-1982)
Hervé Collot (1982-1984)
Arsène Wenger (1984-1987)
Robert Dewilder (1987-1990)
Aimé Jacquet (1990-1991)
Marcel Husson (June-October 1991)
Olivier Rouyer (October 1991-1994)
László Bölöni (1994-2000)
Francis Smerecki (2000-2002)
Moussa Bezaz (June-November 2002)
Pablo Correa (November 2002-)

Aimé Jacquet stands out as having experience and being available. After winning the Worldcup in 1998 he "became technical director of French football, a position which he held until his resignation in 2006."

Posted by: Looking Dangerous | April 30, 2008 10:39 AM

what's all this Nancy talk about?

Posted by: td | April 30, 2008 10:49 AM

Francis Smerecki stands out as the most likely canidate in my book. Youth coach in the France system...

Aimé Jacquet has too much pedigree to take a role with us I think. He won the World Cup in 98'...although he was technical director until 06'

Sigh!

Peugeot or Renault as the shirt sponsor :-)

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | April 30, 2008 11:05 AM

shirt sponsor is VW

Posted by: football | April 30, 2008 11:22 AM

Nancy?

Just off the top of my head there's Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pete Yorn and Frank Sinatra songs.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | April 30, 2008 11:22 AM

Perrier is nowhere near Nancy, though!

Posted by: RK | April 30, 2008 11:23 AM

Haha. Ronaldo's girlfriend has left him, and he could lose his $100mm contract with Nike.

do any of these players have PR reps? they come out with the most foolish sounding comments. Drogba should be focusing on scoring as he has not been doing much of that lately.

Until you've been with 3 trannies you haven't lived my friend.

Goff, any truth to the numerous rumours swirling around that it is indeed VW sponsoring the jersey? Supposively, actual jerseys with the logo have been seen. Any confirmation?

Posted by: Phil | April 30, 2008 12:06 PM

Everyone knew her as Nancy.....

Posted by: Rocky Roccoco | April 30, 2008 12:29 PM

When the DCU jersey sponsor deal is done -- and it's not -- Insider readers will be the first to know. Maybe next week.

Benitez should have seen Emilio's last game. Drogba looked like a rock compared to Emilio who fell over whenever a Salt Lake player looked in his direction.

Posted by: Divers | April 30, 2008 12:47 PM

Goff,

I just called the main offices of dcunited, mainly to purchase the new shirt with the logo, they send me to the sales department where this guy, told me that the new shirts with the logo are going to start selling in two weeks.
ask him if it was the vw logo, he said " I can't tell you" so i said its not going to be vw "I can't tell you that either"

Posted by: koolcaio | April 30, 2008 12:51 PM

Great. It sounds like all coming together and at least United can earn some much needed $$$ Goff's indication maybe next week and sales person responding within next two weeks sound all solid. Really hoping Audi but can live with VW. Although I won't buy either car.

Posted by: td | April 30, 2008 12:58 PM

Drogba needs to stop blaming other people like players and coaches and take a good look at himself. Is it that hard to stop diving?

Posted by: andrew | April 30, 2008 1:05 PM

Nancy Sinatra?

Bang Bang

Posted by: sitruc | April 30, 2008 1:17 PM

Oh please Didier Drogba has his legs in the air more than monica lewinsky did during the hell of Clinton's "presidency"

Posted by: bobf | April 30, 2008 1:23 PM

I'm one of the folks that likes to complaing about MLS scheduling but it's not like other leagues can't also be stupid.

"Tonight's" NBA playoff game between the Wizards and Cavaliers is at 6 pm.

Posted by: garbaggio | April 30, 2008 1:29 PM

Does anyone know when on Wednesday the goal of the week voting closes? Gallardo is still ahead but since this morning his 7% point lead has narrowed to 3% as of the last update. Still voting.

Posted by: bluemeanies | April 30, 2008 1:43 PM

Down by 1%now- vote!

Steve Nicole, Revolution head couch is on ESPN commentator booth but I didn't recognize him first because of the dress up rather than usual cheap track suit her wears. He looks much younger. I think chicks will dig in LOL. sorry

Is there an online radio stream for today's match? My cable provider does not get ESPN360.

@peridigm
It's on espn2

Mr. Goff,

The Gordon Bradley obituary is one of the finest I've ever read. Leave it to you to pen such an outstanding piece for such an outstanding man. He will be truly missed, as he was truly loved.

Posted by: DCUInWheaton | April 30, 2008 2:17 PM

"Great. It sounds like all coming together and at least United can earn some much needed $$$"
-------

I don't get the infatuation with a corporate sponsor on DC's jerseys. I understand if people want to wear what the players are wearing, and I support the club generating revenue, but I'd be much more excited if they came out and said "due to extra revenue from high attendance at home games, we've decided that there is no need to confuse or weaken our brand by putting a corporate sponsor logo on our jerseys".

Posted by: David | April 30, 2008 2:24 PM

@td

Yeah, I know but my office does not have a TV.

Posted by: peridigm | April 30, 2008 2:42 PM

Daivd, are you a Barca fan because that's about the only team in the world that can boast not caring about sponsorship.

Posted by: SeppBlatter | April 30, 2008 3:00 PM

Tiger Beer is awesome

David, are you a Barca fan because that's about the only team in the world that can boast not caring about sponsorship?
----------------------------------------

I, for one, don't give a rat's ass about the logo on the jersey. In fact, I think it's a damn shame that our jersey is going to be disfigured with some damn corporation's name.

And yes, I know that most teams in the world have jersey sponsors...but I don't have to like it.

On the flip side, I'm glad DCU will get the money (I am a realist, after all). I hope they put it to good use.

Posted by: KR in DC | April 30, 2008 5:19 PM

How will this new French guy affect John Maessner's position with the club???

Posted by: Lonnie | April 30, 2008 6:40 PM

I also agree with KR in DC--the advertising men took away our "White Stripes against the Players Chest" because they want to put some corporate logo on it.
It sorry, but I guess it's the way of the business. Do you realize since they took away the two white stripes off the front of the shirt, D.C United hasn't played like D.C.United? It's a thought????

Posted by: Leo | May 1, 2008 2:32 AM

The THREE white stripes (not two) that have graced DCU's jersey are the symbol of ADDIDAS. So it's not as if we have ever been shirt sponsorship 'pure' to begin with.
