USA Women at RFK

The Insider has learned that the U.S. women's national team will play a friendly against Canada on Sat., May 10 at RFK Stadium -- the Americans' first appearance in D.C. since the 2003 World Cup opener against Sweden. Kickoff will probably be early evening. An official announcement is expected this week. The USSF and local organizers declined comment. Both the U.S. and Canada are one victory away from Olympic berths, with the Americans facing Costa Rica and Canada taking on host Mexico on Wednesday night.

First...and nothing to say

I am freaking thrilled that we will have US National Team soccer back in RFK.
That is great! First the Natettes and the Nats are rumored to be possibly coming back for a WCQ! Excellent!

I would have annexed Canada.

The Pulitzer Prize committee, cemented to the 20th century, has again failed to recognize Steve for excellence in Sports Blogs. Until they do so, please boycott all the Prize winners (except, of course the Washington Post because we need our fix of soccer news).

So we'll have DCU vs. Chicago on Thursday, USWMT vs. Canada on Saturday, and the last matchday for EPL (including Spurs vs. Liverpool) that weekend. And my last final is on Monday. F*ck.

Who are the local organizers?

Canada may be one victory away from an Olympic berth, or one loss away from something else. I believe Mexico scored an upset at just this juncture four years ago and went to Greece.

"Who are the local organizers?"

I would guess some combination of the DC Sports & Entertainment Commission and perhaps DC United/MLS and perhaps US Soccer and/or Washington Freedom and the Canadian Embassy or all of the above in some or no capacity.

Here's one Pulitzer honoree who should not be boycotted:

Speaking of which, I-270, Exit 1 (the geographic location) will be a musical venue tonight, as it is every Monday night:

It's not that Irish guy with the bazooka again, is it?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | April 7, 2008 5:46 PM

No, they've long since returned to Hibernia. (Incidentally, I've been told that when you try to board a plane with one, you call it an octave mandolin.)

Uhh ohhh, will they have conccessions or will it be BYOB? Maybe United can send their development players down to the game to sell beer and sports bras to earn some extra cash.

I'll be there. US-Canada is a good rivalry. Plus it's fun to watch the Canadian soccer forums afterwards. Since it is a friendly and not a meaningful match or tournament, does that mean it will be televised?

Posted by: sitruc | April 7, 2008 7:16 PM

Is there Hope for this match?

Posted by: Curious | April 7, 2008 7:49 PM

Who are the hotties?

The Ginger Clown is on Fox Footy Fone-in. Didn't he criticize that show for being irrelevant? The guy on the left (no, my left) isn't there today. Maybe he's boycotting, like the Jan Hooks did when Andrews Dice Clay hosted SNL.

@I-270: Wasn't that Nora Dunn?

Posted by: Section 130 | April 7, 2008 9:55 PM

Damn, I have a gig that night. I hope it's an early afternoon game! 1 pm start please!

Posted by: Greifie | April 7, 2008 10:44 PM

Fox Footy Fone-in: a horrible, horrible show. Last night, I watched for a few minutes (just a few, mind you). The guy on the right was incoherent -- I understood every fourth word. The guy on the left (your left, I-270) looked like he wanted to be somewhere else.

They need to get rid of that program and Dream Team. I'd rather watch Chuck Norris pitch his amazo-gym or whatever it's called. At least Chuck is cool. Way cool.

* WNT friendly should not be a day game because it will cut out thousands of youth players, families and coaches with 5/10 games.

* I'm guessing that FFF didn't draw as well as the basketball game last night. Great game, but interesting that it takes them 2 1/2 hours to play a 40 minute game, even a bit more since they went OT. They're killing the game with all the TV time outs.

FFF rocks! Costigan was ripping Lalas a new one.

Most of their friendlies on U.S. soil the past few years have been on BSPN2. However, FSC picked up the May 3 game in Birmingham, and no one has picked up the April 27 match in Cary. We'll see.

Posted by: tri-village | April 8, 2008 12:34 PM

Aren't most women's friendlies during the afternoon?

Posted by: sitruc | April 8, 2008 12:34 PM

They have been mostly early afternoon games, which has probably helped get them on BSPN2. However, the upcoming Australia matches in Cary and Birmingham are at 1900 hours and 1600 hours local time, respectively.

Posted by: tri-village | April 8, 2008 12:54 PM

Probably going to be 7 p.m. with no TV (other than perhaps USSF Web site streaming video)

Still not certain...

Posted by: Goff | April 8, 2008 1:07 PM

I just read the press release for the umpteenth time, and it finally dawned on me that the Cary naming rights have passed from SAS to WakeMed, a local hospital chain.

Posted by: tri-village | April 8, 2008 1:18 PM

Yes. FFF is a terrible show. But it is a show and hopefully will improve after the guys on my right and your right are gone.

Broadcast journalism has turned into two or more men talking over each other and sometimes yelling. They might as well do that for soccer.

Hooks is the only name I remember. SO I plead selective memory if it was Nora Dunn.
