Beep-Beep

Greetings from the RFK Stadium's Volkswagen Lounge, formerly known as the VIP Lounge. Outside the entrance is the 1964 black VW Beetle, Max, featured in the new TV ad campaign. Sadly, no Heidi Klum. Fortunately, no David Hasselhoff.

It's now official: VW and DCU have joined forces in a five-year deal that the Insider has learned will bring in more than $14 million and, of course, will splash the automaker's logo on the front of the club's jersey starting with Thursday's match against the Chicago Fire.

"This is a very exciting day for D.C. United, one we were patient getting to," DCU Prez Kevin Payne said. "This is a perfect match for us."

"As I've said before, D.C. United represents our most authentic brand," The Commish Don Garber said. "To have VW on the front of its jersey, it makes so much sense."

"Football is part of Volkswagen," VW exec Stefan Jacoby said. "Volkswagen means the people's car and soccer is the people's sport."

Payne said he, deep-pocketed investor Victor MacFarlane and possibly GM Dave Kasper will travel to Germany later this month to visit VfL Wolfsburg, which is owned by Volkswagen. They will explore the club's 30,000-seat stadium and observe day-to-day operations.

VW will have the option to purchase the naming rights to a new DCU stadium when that project is completed..... in 2034. ;-)

Argentine star Marcelo Gallardo will serve as a VW spokesman and pitchman in the Latin market.

Big news: VW is picking up the tab on parking at RFK on Thursday. Free parking, woohoo!

Payne, on the decision to drop the traditional three stripes from the uniform to make way for the VW logo: "The stripes were obviously an iconic part of our jersey and our brand, but it is all part of the evolution of our team and the way our league is going. So we made the difficult decision to take the stripes off the jersey and make space."

More to come.....

Methinks he meant "iconic". Some would consider the act of dropping the stripes iconoclastic.

Fire fan here -- I think DC was smarter with the jersey decision than we were in Chicago.

Chicago's chest stripe with the team name was a consistent element in the jersey design, as were the 3 stripes for DC.

But, I think jamming Best Buy into the chest stripe was a mistake. I think DC got it right. Obviously, you would love to keep that element, but preserving it destroys it's character, you haven't really preserved anything.

Nice kits. Now let's get a stadium to call D.C. United home.

Someone should pitch an idea to the NY Red Bulls that their brand is overwhelming. They could bring back the N.Y. Cosmos w/ the colors and so that Red Bull has something in it they can create a new Red Bull "Cosmo" drink. The whole Red Bull NY thing is tasteless.

Mind-bogglingly ugly kit.

The VW logo looks like headlight or a bullseye target. It just does not blend in with the jersey. Of course, the jersey itself is ugly as sin, just a swatch of plain polyester. It might look slightly better on the away kit, but I doubt it.

The old school kit with Master Card was much more attractive.

They could have kept the three stripes, just ending them at the edge of the VW logo...but that might resemble the old Van Halen or Weezer logos.

Another interesting tidbit:

"Volkswagen's jersey sponsorship element makes the company the first group to adorn the front of United's shirt in club history. Traditionally, the space is recognized as the most valuable inventory a soccer club has to offer and is reserved for a crest that supports the team, sharing in the organizational goals and ideals. Authentic and replica jerseys and other merchandise are now available in the D.C. United team store at RFK Stadium or by calling 202-546-7023. Fans that have previously purchased a 2008 authentic or replica jersey are able to have a Volkswagen logo added to their merchandise, courtesy of Volkswagen, by visiting the team store or the jersey stand inside C gate on game days."

I rather like the look of the jersey with the logo. Imean, I think corporate logos on jerseys generally look bad, but this is one of the better ones. I preer the simplicity of the VW logo over having the word "Volkswagon".

That said, the key thing is the money and with the second largest deal in MLS, that's a good thing. I don't expect that money to go towards anything specific (like a new DP) given that DCU has been losing money every year, but the financial stability of the club and league are important.

V-dub in da house! We called this over a month ago, it took a long time to seal the deal on this one. I hope we get to see the return of the stripes, it looks like there is ample room underneath the logo.

VW is going to be a great sponsor, they have a history in european football with wolfsburg and it will be nice to carry that over here. and no one is complaining about the fee parking!

Posted by: DudeAbides | May 6, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

I could design a much better kit. I'd put the stripes back in -- either horizontally, where they would be interrupted by the VW logo, actually drawing attention to the logo -- or, there could be two sets of diagonal stripes on the side/front of the jersey. I think either would be much cooler.

I think "traditional was just the wrong word to use. I was thinking about there being more jerseys with the name of the sponsor written across the chest rather than a logo (though I guess they can be one and the same). Upon reflection that point probably doesn't even hold up, though I still think it would look better written out than as currently styled and in being written that way it would evoke DC's traditional stripes.

The new jerseys look fine. I looked at a Wolfsburg (team owned by VW) jersey last week and the DC logo looks exactly the same as far as size and placement - but in black and white.

Better than most of the other corporate sponsors in MLS. In spite of the team that wears them I think the Red Bulls have the best corporately sponsored jerseys.

The way United's been playing they should have the logo of the company that made the Yugo - Zastava Koral

The way the Galaxy is run, they should have the logo of the company that made the East German Trabant.

Then again, we shouldn't give AEG any ideas....

How about a word on the women's National Team--where are they practicing this week, any interesting new stories? Want to give your take on the Pia era?
