Greetings From L.A.
D.C. United's practice at Home Depot Center was closed -- something we are going to have to get used to, I'm afraid. Seems the ballclub isn't happy with my vivid descriptions of training sessions and the formation and player information being revealed. I can't blame them. I could agree to essentially an off-the-record viewing of practices. I could, but I won't. I'm not going to pretend I don't see things transpiring in front of me. So it's come to this.
Anyway, still no sign of Gonzalo Peralta, who stayed in D.C. with his pregnant wife. He still could show up before gametime, I suppose.
As far as I know, Wells, Carvallo, Namoff, Burch, Martinez, Mediate, Zaher, Simms, Stratford, Dyachenko, Cordeiro, Gallardo, Quaranta, Moreno, Emilio, Niell and Doe are here. Not sure of the 18th player. Kirk, perhaps?
Meantime, Chivas is apparently going to be without six injured defenders on Saturday: Suarez, Talley, Thomas, Bornstein, Zotinca and Vaughn.

As far as the FO is concerned, I don't see Kevin Payne leaving. He's done too much good for the club for too long.
If all those defenders are out, then D.C. should win.

Six injured defenders? Are they planning to play the game at Home Depot Center or the hospital?
Losing that many players at one position would be brutal for any team and with the limited rosters size/depth of the MLS, I sympathize with Chivas USA. I still hope United kicks the tar out of them, but I'll at least pretend to feel a little guilty.
Posted by: noptov52 | May 16, 2008 8:18 PM
First of all glad to hear Goff reporting from LA. We can NOT sit and be comfortable because six of Chiva's defenders were out. They could come out surprise with some unknown players. From now every game should be taken serously and must win.

Oh, so its Goff's reporting that is making the team play so poorly... I knew there was an underlying reason!
Posted by: Emilio_must_Go | May 16, 2008 8:35 PM
Really? I thought Steinberg was the Washington Post reporter most responsible for cursing D.C. United.
Also, since you're not viewing practice, can you recommend a place to eat out in CA, Goff?
Posted by: B.A. | May 16, 2008 8:40 PM
They won't let you view the practice because they don't want anyone to see what a tactical idiot Soehn is. DC loses again 3-0.

USL game is more enjoying to watch than most of MLS games. They play much better poession and passing games and nice team goals as well. It's not like nocking all over the place one ball to team mate and the next one to the opposite side. Atleast USL team can hold the ball. What a surprise! I don't understand it.

Thanks for the reminder -- Atlanta is on for the 3rd time on a Friday night this season.
Posted by: RK | May 16, 2008 9:18 PM
I've seen Palace play, too. I'm pretty sure they could beat United right now.
Posted by: Be More | May 16, 2008 9:23 PM
6-0 DC>Chivas rejects. Santino will get a hat trick, 2 from burch, and one from namoff off a corner.

Remember a few years ago, or maybe it was last year, when we went to LA to play the Galaxy and they had, what, 3 regular starters or something, and we couldn't win.
I'm just sayin...

This isn't looking good for United.

Reason number #23987 for DC's poor start: Goff's deadly exposure of their practice tactics. Embarrassing excuse.

If Chivas are without 6 defenders and United loses, I think I'll go out in the street and just let the nearest 18-wheeler run me over.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 16, 2008 11:29 PM
One place worth trying is right across the street from HDC. R&R Soul Food. Really worthwhile.
Lots a great taquerias all over L.A. and O.C., and if you have time (and money) a ton of great restaurants up on La Cienega in Beverly Hills.

Oh ... and there's always In-N-Out Burger. You might run into Beckham, or Britney, or Landon ...
Get the Double-double with grilled onions.

In-n-Out sucks. Period.
Fatburger is even worse.
Carls Jr. = teh suck
Del Taco = heaven.

Two double-doubles animal style, fries well done, and an extra-large Neapolitan shake...

I'm not Goff, but...
Mexican: El Tarasco, locations all over the South Bay.
Italian: C&O Trattoria, Marina del Rey.
Indian: Indian Summer, El Segundo.
Burgers: Ignore AlecW81. In-n-Out, Fatburger, or Tommy's are all a must.
If you have time, also try Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles; or Canter's Deli on Fairfax (open 24 hours).
And one of my favorites, the Chinese chicken salad at Lisa's Bon Appetit, on Pacific Coast Highway in south Torrance. Yum-o!

Closed practice must mean United are doing something completely unexpected and different. Like shots on goal.
Posted by: spike_2.0 | May 17, 2008 7:03 AM
I haven't been to CA for a while, but way back in '94 me and my friend Vincent Vega were doing some business for my boss Marcellus Wallace. You may have heard of him.
Anyway, one day on the job I found out that Big Kahuna Burger have got some tasty burgers. That's the Hawaiian burger joint.

This is the price we pay for having some of the best coverage in MLS. I can understand DC tiring of having such good analysis provided to their opponents week after week, but MLS will eventually have to deal with press access. After all, this is the kind of publicity that all sports businesses need.
Posted by: BarkerDavidL | May 17, 2008 9:00 AM
Or if they allowed Goff to access to the pratice Kyle dude won't have anything to say about!
Posted by: fC Arlington | May 17, 2008 9:04 AM
Goff,
I'm sure your watchful eyes makes the United players nervous. They just can't concentrate on simple passing and covering on defense if you are ever present.
And opposing coaches certainly need your blog to tell them that United can't play organized, can't score goals, has very little speed and no threats of the bench.
We should win hands down without you pestering them!

It is hardly the first time in professional sports that a struggling team has closed its training to the media.
Mild complaint for Mr. Goff from a loyal and appreciative reader -- why always the quotes from Quaranta in this year's pre-game reports? I would be more interested in what Namoff or Moreno had to say. Or among the new guys, Peralta, Martinez or Gallardo.

Hey Jules,
Want a sausage?
Posted by: Vincent Vega | May 17, 2008 10:39 AM
Hmmm....Goff -- I understand DCU not wanting to give away formations, or likely lineups. Considering no other team has such regular coverage, they must feel the other sides have an unfair advantage. Maybe you should give in...unless you think you've got better things to do with your time than watch practices you can't report on. Seems to me that it would be helpful to your reporting, though. Kinda like comments on background. But, what do I know?

I'd wouldn't be surprised to see Zaher start at LB, move Burch into the middle with Martinez and of course Namoff on the right.
In the mf, Mediate on the right, Simms DM, Gallardo as AM and Cordeiro (but I'd prefer Doe, Mediate, Kirk, Damien Duff)
Up front, Moreno and Q

Del Taco has got it all.
Why is Carl's Jr Hardy's way out east?
Jack in the Crack has breakfast all day...
He might run into Beckham and Snoop if he hits up Roscoe's.
I sure hope United can bust up Chivas today.
Guzan can't stop every shot can he.
Hint: Some body SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

They closed practice so all the negative Nancies have no fodder to chew. Poor baby. No ammunition so we can say, "I told you so." Let Tommy figure it out. Give him his due.....at least till mid-June anyway. I think Tommy recognized that Goff needs some time off and closed training. Go to beach Goff and sport the speedo. Chicks dig it.

Anyway, word is David Beckham threw Landon Donovan out of a window on account of him giving Ms. Beckham a foot massage.

I'd like to Lavar Arrington at LB

I know DCU is embarressed by their start but shuting out the media when the league desperating needs exposure to pretty stupid and short sighted. Of course the time left for the coach and FO may be short as well.
