Hamlett, Contracts, Web TV

*Click here to read my front-page profile of first-year Fire coach Denis Hamlett, who went to high school and college in the Washington area, had his playing career cut short by a stroke and worked 10 years as an assistant before getting a top job.

*Second Third-year defender Michael Dello-Russo (Maryland) has been upgraded to Dallas's senior roster and former DCU forward Guy-Roland Kpene has signed a developmental deal with Houston.

*Saturday's USA women's match against Canada at RFK Stadium will not be televised, but will be available for live viewing on ussoccer.com. Kickoff is 7 p.m. ET.

I have read a blog posting from someone not prone to hysterics that Gallardo will not be going tonight. Any news, Steve?

Posted by: JkR | May 8, 2008 10:01 AM

Great piece on Hamlett, Steve. Denis is a great story.

That said, I hope he loses tonight. Hard.

Posted by: Joe Doc | May 8, 2008 10:02 AM

Dello-Russo is a third year defender, and Andrew Daniels has been temporarily moved up to the senior roster as well

Posted by: bb17 | May 8, 2008 10:11 AM

Thank God they are showing the women's game online. Great news.

Posted by: Dannyc58 | May 8, 2008 10:19 AM

Kpene lands in Houston. Could they score fewer goals than they have already?

Cesc Fabregas taking some heat... something to watch and ponder while you wait for the day to pass and the game to kick off.

Posted by: wow! | May 8, 2008 10:55 AM

This time, I agree with Joe Doc :-)

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 8, 2008 11:03 AM

Knew you'd have my back, I-270!

:)

Posted by: Joe Doc | May 8, 2008 11:14 AM

Yeah, DC has a whopping one more than Dallas...and DC has played Toronto and RSL. I'd rather have Kenny Cooper, too...

Posted by: RK | May 8, 2008 11:15 AM

i cannot believe what just happened...Christian Gomez wanted the same amout that they aer giving Luciano Emilio

Posted by: Fulvio | May 8, 2008 11:26 AM

Gomez wanted several GUARANTEED years; that was the big issue, not the money.

Posted by: Goff | May 8, 2008 11:27 AM

The women's game should be televised. We need more 5-4 matches to get Americans behind the sport.

But seriously, a little defense would be tremendous.

Posted by: Hacksaw | May 8, 2008 11:35 AM

Thank you for the story on Denis Hamlett, Goffinho. Having said that, I must second Joe Doc's comments and hope that he gets served this evening by DC United.

DCU was betting that CGomez was on his last legs -- maybe not this year, but in a few years. Be patient. Signing aging players to long-term contracts is a good way to hit the basement. Think of all of the baseball contracts like that...

Posted by: RK | May 8, 2008 11:43 AM

Best of luck to Kpene, I hope he can start lighting it up (except against VeeDub United, natch).

================

It was 5-2 if you discount the own goals or would it be 7-2?:-).

We should give Pia room to experiment with formations and lineups even if it means losing some friendlies. On the bright side, the women kept fighting for the win. Knowing how to play when you're not leading is an asset we lacked in WWC07.

You could say that again

I heard a VW radio commercial this morning which said VW was offering free parking for ALL DC United matches. I know I can use my parking pass for tonight's match at the team store, but what about all the other paid-up parking passes I have? Know anything about this, Goffer?

Posted by: Hedbal | May 8, 2008 12:17 PM

The parking deal is supposed to be as follows: Free Parking for everyone tonight.

For the remaining games, free parking for the 1st 50 VW's to arrive at the game.

Posted by: JkR | May 8, 2008 12:20 PM

Good question Hedbal.

Posted by: Curious | May 8, 2008 12:20 PM

i really dont care Gomez is WAY WAY WAY better than Emilio...Emilio sucks...i dont see why hes the defending MVP...most of his goals come when he has no one defending...he cant cross anybody up..he flat-out stinks...

"...have read a blog posting from someone not prone to hysterics that Gallardo will not be going tonight. Any news, Steve?"

By Goff in today's Post:
D.C. Probable Starters (4-4-2 formation): GK Zach Wells; Ds Bryan Namoff, Gonzalo Peralta, Gonzalo Martínez, Marc Burch; MFs Santino Quaranta, Clyde Simms, Marcelo Gallardo, Fred; Fs Jaime Moreno, Luciano Emilio.

Posted by: seahawkdad | May 8, 2008 12:26 PM

One more time: Get over Gomez, he's gone.
Emilio isn't in their to cross the ball any way Fulvio, he likes the ball to bounce off of someone or something and land at his feet when he is pointed towards the goal.
What is the deal with Gallardo's concussion?

Posted by: Dadryan | May 8, 2008 12:35 PM

Free Parking On Thursday, May 8

VW is going to pick up your parking fee on Thursday.

If you already have a pass in hand, you still can get a deal: bring your parking pass to the team store at the Main Gate and get a discount. If you have a lot 8 pass-$7 credit, lot 4/5 pass-$12 credit off a purchase of $25 or more (all merchandise is eligible including new jerseys). This offer is only valid on Thursday, you must present the parking pass at time of purchase.

I've also read a few non-hysterical intimations that neither Gallardo or Fred is fully fit for tonight...

INJURY REPORT: D.C. UNITED - OUT: MF Ben Olsen (ankle surgery); MF Jeff Carroll (toe surgery); DF Jeff Curtin (groin strain); QUESTIONABLE: MF Devon McTavish (mid-foot sprain); MF Domenic Mediate (hamstring strain); MF Fred (hamstring strain); MF Marcelo Gallardo (groin strain) ...

Fingers crossed...

IF you want to get a glimpse of the next generation of talent, and check out the Development Academy that Goff reported on in the fall, at 5 over on the turf fields by Lot 7, DC United's U-18s will take on Potomac's U-18s. Admission is free.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 8, 2008 1:30 PM

"MF Marcelo Gallardo (groin strain)"

Something to think about for the caption contest.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | May 8, 2008 1:53 PM

I am ready to go to the game now.

I've noticed that a lot of people who've played for the Ticos over the years have had British Isles (English/Scottish/whatever) surnames. Hamlett falls into that category. I could understand why these surnames would be common in Belize, but why in Costa Rica?

Note that this is from early this morning. You may want to check something like the Weather Channel site for more current info.

Goff, I know this is late (work has been busy) but thanks for the Gallardo and Hamlett pieces. I like seeing more DCU articles in the Post besides game previews and results.

*****************************************

Much of the low-lying Caribbean coast of Central America was populated by black English speaking folks more similar to the population of Jamaica or other English speaking Caribbean islands than to the mostly native American / Spanish / mestizo temperate highland regions of Central America (where most of the big cities are found).

Great story on Denis.
Hats off to him and best of luck - not tonight though :)
All kidding aside, he is a great guy!

Thanks for the explanation, garbaggio!
