Morning Kickaround

*Click here to read my long profile of DCU's high-priced playmaker, Marcelo Gallardo. Unlike most foreign players, he opened up and had some interesting tales to tell, most notably the telephone call he received from Diego Maradona.

*Dan Steinberg's Sports Bog was on location at RFK for the VW-DCU festivities yesterday. Be sure to read all of his entertaining entries.

*The DCU-Chicago match tomorrow night at RFK is listed as a 7:30 p.m. start, but because of ESPN2's pregame show, kickoff will not actually take place until close to 8 p.m. So you'll have extra time to enjoy the tailgating in your VW-paid parking space.

*Reminder: The memorial service for former Cosmos, Dips and GMU coach Gordon Bradley will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at George Mason's soccer stadium. Click here for details and location.

*I'd love to share with you the sights and sounds of DCU's practice session today, but chances are, it is going to be closed to the media. And besides, I am working on a Denis Hamlett feature for tomorrow's editions and plan to avoid RFK today.

Posted by: hoyanick | May 7, 2008 9:23 AM

Please grill Garber with all of the tough questions, especially the comment he made after we lost at Pachuca. That leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth.

Posted by: DC United Fan | May 7, 2008 9:29 AM

Don't forget to mention to the commish that the Russian club and Rangers have both had matches postponed for the UEFA Cup.

Posted by: JMR | May 7, 2008 9:33 AM

Nice profile on Gallardo Mr. Goff.
I thought his comment about his wife's defect was pretty funny.
Thank you for giving us something informative to read about our new #10.

DCU Maniac:
There is no need for that sort of name calling. All DCU supporters groups are on the same side. There is no reason to antagonize anyone.

Posted by: bribri | May 7, 2008 9:40 AM

@DCU Maniac

Hmmmm - I love you supporters groups and am even a member of one with friends in the other. Don't let childish crap blow up the greatest deal in ALLL of sports.

Show some maturity.

Barca-Real today, and there's a tradition that's going to be really embarrassing for Barca. Apparently, when a champion has been crowned, the opposing team forms a pasillo -- a tunnel -- for Real to run through (Marca.com has images/video). How humbling...

Posted by: RK | May 7, 2008 9:41 AM

GREAT profile written for Gallardo and I admire for the post to have nice big picture on the sports section front page in color.

Posted by: td | May 7, 2008 9:43 AM

Posted by: DC United Fan that took off the bag from his face for tonight's game!!!! | May 7, 2008 10:03 AM

DCU Maniac if you need to get something out of your system you have 90 minutes to do it tomorrow. :)

Barra is strong in stands not internet.

Posted by: Srdan, La Barra | May 7, 2008 10:12 AM

@DCU Maniac

I know - I just feel like the Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles need to make sure they coexist as peacefully as possible. I'm fine with them both wanting to be distinct and operate their organizations differently - it's what makes United great. But I'm not fine with anything that would ever jeopardize their standing with the club or give the club anything it would have to apologize for to the league (ie behavior, bottle throwing, safety issues).

That aside, I'm really hoping that RFK bounces like no other and that the new 49850 text promotion is a Free Car for a hat trick from a player.

Posted by: Virginia Blue Blood | May 7, 2008 10:12 AM

I like the VW full page ad on the back of the sports section. They are really splashing out the cash. Was the line in their about the people wanting more scoring and less diving directed at Blanco?

Posted by: Glenn | May 7, 2008 10:13 AM

Goff,

Excellent work on the Gallardo piece.

Hey DCU Maniac come on dude show some respect dont make us look bad who cares dude we do what we do in every game regardless of if we have a giant jersey or not we have to go out there and do what we do best support United thats all. Dont worry about the rest

VAMOS UNITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: 135 | May 7, 2008 10:18 AM

i'm not a member of either SE or BB but i'm surprised at the rivalry between. i don't know the specifics and i don't care to know them. all i know is you guys are there for a common cause. who cares who holds a jersey? as long as it's displayed well, it's doing what it's meant to do. now i've sat with both groups and never have i felt any friction. i hope these little mishaps are every once in a while, and i'm not just being naive.

Posted by: antonio | May 7, 2008 10:28 AM

U tell him Srdan , he is right DCU Maniac you have 90 minutes! dont mess with the eagles!!! they do what they do and we do what we do its all good!!!!!
Hey ruso what happened last game u didnt go?

Posted by: 135 | May 7, 2008 10:30 AM

Oh no, maybe BB will decide to shift over again, leaving a gaping whole on the side...

Posted by: RK | May 7, 2008 10:34 AM

Posted by: 135 | May 7, 2008 10:37 AM

Whoops...meant "hole", of course.

Posted by: RK | May 7, 2008 10:42 AM

Waaaaaaaaaarriors come out and Plaaaaaaayyy!

Posted by: Dadryan | May 7, 2008 10:46 AM

Love the reference to Maradona as "the keg-shaped superstar" in the Gallardo piece.

Posted by: FC | May 7, 2008 10:57 AM

Great piece on Gallardo. It is good to know more about the person. I am looking forward to seeing the team come together as the season progresses.

Posted by: Gallardo Fan | May 7, 2008 11:42 AM

What I don't get is that some in BB claim to support the team and only the team, but yet these same BB idiots complain about what other independent supporter groups do or don't do.. As a BB, I could care less about what the SE's, LN or the quiet side do or don't do (or even how they go about doing things). As a BB, DCU Maniac, you need to quit your fetish with other groups and support United and your fellow Barra brothers and sisters.

The only enemy is the other team...

Posted by: Anonymous | May 7, 2008 11:59 AM

"Stop fighting! We should be united against the common enemy! "The Judean People's Front"!!!"

Posted by: Fisch Fry | May 7, 2008 12:22 PM

We're the judean people's front! You mean the 'people's front of Judea!'

Splitters!

Posted by: DCAustinite | May 7, 2008 1:23 PM

We are DC United. NEVER FORGET THAT!

VAMOS UNITED!!

Posted by: Kosh | May 7, 2008 1:25 PM

Great job on the Gallardo piece, Steve.

Gallardo's phone call from Maradona would be akin to me getting a phone call from... from... well, Steven Goff!

Posted by: Joe Doc | May 7, 2008 1:33 PM

I heard it was the Barra who cried and said they wouldn't participate in the jersey unwrap. It's become a big dick swinging contest now between these two supporters clubs.

Posted by: Sam | May 7, 2008 3:13 PM

You heard wrong.

Posted by: QuietSide | May 7, 2008 3:48 PM

Not really, it was from a source close to the team. Whatever, like I said competition between those two groups has become fierce and I can see these two groups sitting in different places when a new stadium is built.

Posted by: Sam | May 7, 2008 4:10 PM

Maybe your source forgot to mention that the Barra said let the screagles do it after they called complaining. The Barra has their own thing going on. Whatever, you're right though. Hopefully we'll be far apart in the new stadium.

Posted by: QuietSide | May 7, 2008 4:38 PM

You heard wrong Sam, or your source misinterpreted it. My source was my mouth and ears ;)

Hopefully right about new stadium, I don't see any negatives in it :)

Posted by: Srdan, La Barra | May 7, 2008 4:39 PM

I really like the fact that going three seasons without winning an MLS Cup, despite the two Supporters' Shields, is considered a "drought" and is therefore unacceptable.

Man, I love this team!!

Posted by: Greenbelt United | May 7, 2008 4:48 PM

Aw screw it, maybe my source did get it wrong. Not trying to pick a fight here. I'm not a member of any supporters club, I just show up and root for DCU so i don't have any feelings about either group but I've noticed there are bad feelings of between both groups.

Posted by: Sam | May 7, 2008 10:57 PM

Barra Brava members let's concentrate on Today's WIN and NOT on other supporters group.

Let's ROCK the F.... stands.
Good luck to all

Posted by: El Jefe | May 8, 2008 10:44 AM

The Eagles wanted to co-hoist the jersey with the Barra, with one half of the jersey over 134 and the other half over 135. That would have been a nice show of unity at a major moment in United's business history. Frankly, it's a bummer that that isn't going to happen.

For the record, there was never a moment where the jersey was going to be "given" to any one supporters group. The team owns it and is keeping it.

Posted by: Paul | May 8, 2008 11:05 AM

The fact that dc owns the jersey is very true but the FO was gonna give it to BB for this particular game offcourse we had to give it back but as El Jefe said lets concentrate on the game and no the others supporters clubs or the Jersey !!!

VAMOS UNITED!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: 135 | May 8, 2008 11:41 AM

135 - you're wrong. Both clubs were asked to assist.

Now, let's focus on the game. Chicago is playing very well and our bogeyman, so we need to bring it for the full 90 tonight, rain or shine.

Posted by: Paul | May 8, 2008 11:57 AM

ok Paul if you say so!

Lets beat those MFers from chicago !

Posted by: 135 | May 8, 2008 12:37 PM

u must have been there as i was but hey oh well!!
