Keeping It Real

Real Maryland, the first-year USL2 club based at Montgomery County, will host Firpo of El Salvador in a friendly on Friday night. For more information, click here. Meantime, Real defender Matthew Eby, whom I profiled in The Post in April, is off to Greece with the U.S. deaf national team.

The Monarchs are in Cary, N.C., tonight for a U.S. Open Cup second-round game against the USL1's Carolina Railhawks.

I'm moving to Raleigh, NC this Sunday and can't wait to check out a Railhawk match. It surely will not be the same as a DCU match, but at least I'll have some live soccer to go watch. I'll wear the black and red proudly!

Rob, be aare you are not exempt from attending DCU games. Raleigh is only 4 hours away.

Posted by: Ron | June 24, 2008 4:19 PM

Oh trust me, I will be back here for matches in the future. The wife's family lives near by so we will be back frequently. And like you say, it's only 4 hours away...definitely a weekend drive.

Rob, Last year I went down to Cary for a match. Very nice little SSS.

If they still have a couple of ex-United players, that should make you feel even more at home.

And their supporters' group, Triangle Supporters--they serve some good food during the tailgate prematch and they support their side in the Depot.

Rob,

When I was in Raleigh visiting family last year I went to a Railhawks game. It was a good time - the crowd was decent, I think around 7,000 (better than NYRB! It was the Railhawks largest crowd that year. I sat with the supporters group - the 204 Depot. Now it isn't like being at RKF - it was def a family environment, even in the supporters section - but fun nonetheless. It's a good team with good fans.

awesome match
i would have moved the game to RFK just for the occasion, the soccer plex will not be able to accomadate the mass crowd.

is it me but $20 for a third division team is too expensive.

Good luck to Matthew and our side. Way to reprezent.

Dips, personally, I agree with you. I am a Crystal Palace Baltimore season ticket holder and we pay less. If you get the plan, a lot less. But USOC does cost to host.

Some USL1 sides charge less than Real.

Real is definitely at the top of the ticket spectrum but then again, look at the guys that they brought in. Gotta pay for it somehow.

Posted by: yankiboy | June 24, 2008 4:28 PM

$20? Ouch. I think I can get into Silverbacks -- or Braves -- games for 10.

It's not you. I'm cheap too.

I've yet to hit up a Railhawk's game myself. Since I'm coming up for United's match Sunday, I can't see dropping the coin to see Fake Maryland vs Stoke's Army.

FYI: Cary is known to Carolina locals as "Containment Area for Reject Yankees".

RailHawks fan here -- anybody interested can watch on USL Live, I do believe they're showing the game for free tonight

Carolina's webcast production is some of the best in the USL (if not the best).

And you can't beat FREE.

Still the dumbest f-ing name out there.

Posted by: Jose | June 24, 2008 5:10 PM

Better RailHawk than Red Bull.

:)

I think he was talking about Real Maryland being a retarded name.

Posted by: AlecW81 | June 24, 2008 5:21 PM

DC United fans angry that the Monarchs get equal or more coverage in the spanish media?

Here's someone pushing yet another reason why the football world should reconsider South Africa:

Posted by: AlecW81 | June 24, 2008 6:53 PM

Hey Goff. What's the attendance looking like for Sunday? We gonna get over 40,000?

Posted by: Gonzalo Peralta | June 24, 2008 6:54 PM

Actually, the Real Maryland round 1 US Open Cup game was the most enjoyable soccer game I have seen this year--a 3-2 win in overtime. A good bargain at $15 a ticket for that game.

Posted by: arsenal | June 24, 2008 6:59 PM

That expensive? I don't remember tickets being that pricey when I went to Crystal Palace Maryland games last summer at Navy/Marine Corps Memorial, which I assume would be most expensive to rent.

Rochester is up 1-0 over Pittsburgh at the start of the 2nd half.

Whoever wins this game plays DC United in the Third Round.

2-0 in Rochester. Pittsburgh has coem unglued. Rochester scored on a cross from our old friend Steve Guppy delivered to Marcio Salles.

Looks like we'll be playing the Rhinos.

Posted by: Open Cup | June 24, 2008 8:53 PM

And just like that Steve Guppy gets a red card and is sent off for a criminal tackle from behind on a Pittsburgh player.

Not sure how it works in this tourney. Does the red mean Guppy will be suspended for Rochester's game vs United?

Posted by: US Open Cup | June 24, 2008 9:01 PM

3-0 Rochester Rhinos with 14 mins left.

We'll see them at the Soccerplex.

Jamil Walker taken down in the box by the goalkeeper in the 90th minute.

Kapono Low converts the penalty to give the Railhawks a 1-0 lead with 4 minutes of stoppage time to come.

Posted by: Phillip | June 24, 2008 9:30 PM

Another old friend, Jamil Walker brought down in the box in the 90th minute of a 0-0 game between the Carolina Railhawks and Real Maryland leading to a penalty kick. Carolina 1 - Maryland 0.

Anybody know if Super (and I use that term very loosely) Liga matchs will be streamed to the net for free like last year?

Posted by: Harpo | June 24, 2008 9:44 PM

Re: SuperLiga. Yes they will.

MLSNet will rebroadcast Fox Sports Canada's English language broadcast online.

Anyone got any info on ticket sales...for Sunday's Nationals-Orioles game? I don't really care, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Maybe they ask that stuff on the Nationals Journal? Doubt it.

Posted by: Peter angelos | June 24, 2008 10:15 PM

The Rhinos will be tough. I'm not going to say that we should start the normal top XI against them, but I'd like to see a couple members of the first team in addition to the top Reserve guys. Maybe something like...

---------------Wells-------------
--Namoff--Mediate--Murphy--Zaher--
Quaranta-Stratford-Dyachenko-Cordeiro
-----------Niell---Doe-----------

Crystal Palace USA beats Harrisburg on penalties. Finally game within an hour of DC that NY could win, so I may make the drive up the drive up the B-W Parkway. I'll wave at Greenbelt for you United folks.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | June 24, 2008 11:39 PM

Thanks MJ!! You know you could just jump on up on the ol' bandwagon and become a United fan.

Off topic how bout Shaq's rap about Kobe? Now that's sports!
Jimmy Kimmel is funny...Billy Dee in the house!
Colt 45 sure would be a cool jersey sponsor wouldn't it?
