Matchnight: DCU vs. New York

[updated]

Greetings from RFK.

Guess what? It's been raining. Almost every match this season, or so it seems. Hopefully, no postponements (RFK) or tornado warnings (Chicago), like last week.

Here's the game-time forecast: click here.

For those of you watching at home: Comcast SportsNet and HDNet.

Yes, United's Domenic Mediate is related to PGA veteran Rocco Mediate, who is in contention at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines this weekend. They are distant cousins.

DCU's lineup: Wells; Martinez, McTavish, Peralta, Burch; Quaranta, Simms, Dyachenko, Fred; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Carvallo, Mediate, Kirk, Murphy, Stratford, Cordeiro, Niell.

You know the drill: Pregame, in-game and postgame discussion in the comments section down there.

Me too. Me too. I predict a yellow card for him in the first half.

Anybody see that Emilo interview just now on CSN, with Dave? I love his english now. I've caught him in two interviews lately and I think he gives good interviews.

Rain coming. Should hit the Estadio about right at KO. It is right over Centreville now. Thunderclaps in Vienna. You will be comfy in the press box crow's nest.

DCU 2 (Emilio, Reformed Pillboy), Pink Cows 1 (Wells with a howler on a slick shot).

Kevin Stott's hair gel will help keep the field dry.

I picked the early edition of Sunday's paper this afternoon. Steinbog has an interesting article, not in the sports section, but in the Sunday Source section:

I don't think the heavy stuff is coming down for quite awhile now.

Posted by: delantero | June 14, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

does anyone else have problems with MLSLive.tv shutting down their internet connection? I've gone through Level 2 tech support through MLS and still don't have answers...and i'm on the west coast, so no CSN for me. Any ideas? (and no, myp2p doesn't have it...)

Posted by: roxrok | June 14, 2008 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Less than 15 seconds into the match Dyachenko already turned the ball over.

Are you kidding me?

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | June 14, 2008 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Goff's article on Santino was just mentioned on the game broadcast.

Burch scares me right now. Several give aways.

*******************************************

I just checked my connection on mlslive.tv and it was working fine. But I'm watching the game on HDNet so it's a moot point as far as I'm concerned.

But yes my mlslive.tv was working.

Rod: Still a hack. How long before he gets a red card?

Posted by: seth | June 14, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

hmm.. looks like it wasn't

Posted by: seth | June 14, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Nice goals. Sahweeeeeeet!!!

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Any reason why Burch isn't paired centrally with Peralta?

McTavish seems a more natural outside back. Smaller, quicker, SHORT, but he can get forward faster.

Posted by: delantero | June 14, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Now that's nice D, Martinez - almost counts as a goal for me. he steals a sure goal from RedBulls. Nice Hustle!

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

I thought that was a sure goal for NY. We gotta go into half up 2.

Posted by: brickjp | June 14, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

brickjp,

No, we don't.

Posted by: B.A. | June 14, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

EMILIO GOOOAAAAALLL!!!

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

my bad...GOALLLLLLLLLL.

Posted by: brickjp | June 14, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

and we are at the half

Posted by: How about three> | June 14, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Really, a thrilling and dominant performance in the first half. Quaranta, Fred, Emilio, Moreno are attacking with fluidity. Martinez has been excellent, and Peralta solid.

Wells is playing unusually well, coming out to punch away the many set pieces without once falling into no-man's land. This is certainly his best half for our team.

Now at halftime, their goal ought to be a clean sheet.

Posted by: black shirt | June 14, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

That sequence with all the NYRB corner kicks was scary although it seems this team's only opportunities may be on the set play. Would be nice to get a shutout tonight but who can complain up 3-0 w/o Gallardo and Namoff. I'll take it.

Posted by: sbg | June 14, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

This is a great environment to bring O'Neal in to get some confidence with a fluid attack and an inching-forward defense. Sub him in for Dyachenko, please.

Posted by: Glaucon | June 14, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Santino is definitely creating chances. I'm impressed with his play. We seem to have a good touch on the ball...better than usual.

Posted by: brickjp | June 14, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I won't call it pure domination by DC. There was that corner kick pressure and that sure fire goal that Martinez stole from Wollyniec (sp?). BUT DC is mad clinical in front of the net. Plus they are flat out punishing NY for their mistakes. It is was a very solid half. It would be nice to keep the sheet clean and (two more DC goals - an Emilio hat trick - would also be nice)

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

An aside:

The Rapids are getting served something nasty by the Canucks. TFC is all over them, 3 zip up there too.

Spank! Spank! Spank!

Posted by: Al | June 14, 2008 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Just got in from the beach in DE. Nothing tops a day at the beach like hearing Tony Limarzi call two DC goals on the radio!

Question: did Tino not look good in the first half? He sounded fine on the radio. Otherwise, why the sub?

Posted by: DCBird | June 14, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

And just like that we cough one up...

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinking Wells should have stopped that one. What say ye all?

Anywho, DC went right back to put pressure on NY. Emilio almost had the hat trick.

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

EMILIO wear you HAT son, wear your hat!

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAL!!!!

DC 4 - NY 1

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Goff, can you ask Osorio if at halftime, when the Bulls are down 3-0, he asked his team "to feel the game" like he did last week?

Posted by: delantero | June 14, 2008 8:59 PM | Report abuse

While Emilio wears pulls the TRICK, Jaime literally designs the goal. He holds the ball at the mid for what felt like a millinium, then with one deft pass - we get a 2 on 1 and...well we all know where things stand right now.

Much love to you, Jaime.

========================================

The MLS site reports that Jeff Cunningham has been shown a yellow for "trickery". I wonder what that involved.

Posted by: tri-village | June 14, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Wow, the guys on HDNet are kinda laying into Goff/The Post for putting the Santino story in print.

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | June 14, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Burch should have been red-carded for that.

Nasty and reckless.

Posted by: delantero | June 14, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Tino got hit on the top of the foot early in the first half, I assume that it swelled up at halftime and with that lead, you give him a rest.

But, tri-village, you will be way to busy watching the US destroy Barbados at that time right? :)

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the Bajans will get whatever is coming to them in the 5-to-7 slot. In other words, including Euro 2008, action from 2:30 onward, with a respite between 7 and 8.

Posted by: tri-village | June 14, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse

That's game boys and girls: as usual, they come in as Bulls and leave as well done patties. What esle is new you ask?

Well Emilio decided he wanted to score 20 goals tonight (can you blame him?)

DC goes for trickeration on the set plays.

DC steps it up Euros style an punishes the Bulls on every mistake.

If one were to consider the midfield meastro a conductor of sorts, then Jaime was Motzart, Beethovan and Handel personified. Dude was Vulcan good tonight.

Tino played a half , but brought it.

Martinez IS on heck of a defender.

Did I miss anything peoples?

VAMOS UNITED!

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

On the side: The red hot KC is being loved up by the Cow-kissers: 3-nil.

tri-village: You are correct, indeed. So there you have it - Euros to US WQC to DC replay. I get the feeling that people are going to walk into work with an after-very-satisfying-sex look on their faces on Monday morning. :)

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Emillio is awesome, Martinez is awesome, Peralta is getting better and better. SHAME ON YOU NAYSAYERS during the drought. Vamos United!!!

Posted by: Harpo | June 14, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

NAY, I say, NAAAAYYYY!!!

I prodly stand up, we had to call them out because we knew that they were better than what they were offereing. BUT now there is peace throughout the land.

Posted by: Kosh | June 14, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

The beginning of the all-to-familiar 14-game unbeaten streak, perhaps?

Santino had a minor injury, apparently. He'll have an extra game to rest regardless.

Now let's get a respectable goalie, a left-winger, and we're on our way to several trophies THIS year!

Random thought: I really love the song (if one can call it that) played at the beginning, halftime, and end of CSN's broadcast. Anyone with me there?

Posted by: Glaucon | June 14, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Harpo,

I'm still a naysayer as far as wells. Shame on you for being satisfied with no shut outs to date.

Sooo the HDnet bums are not cool with Goff bringing up the Nasty with Quaranta? What coke head city do they broadcast from?
I applaud Tino for "coming out" so to speak and for Goff helping him and the team that has gone out on a limb for him after kicking him to the curb and treating him like damaged goods.
I sure hope veterans really start doing more and mentoring these groms so they don't turn into idiots.
The haters are gonna hate on United. It's just like all the paper tigers rinsing out their panties these days over France, and Italy. The sportscasters keep kissing up to the favorites. I sure hope we can bring nothing but rock solid defense when Becks, and Donovan come to town.
Can we put in Wells and Carvalllo for that one and run a three man back line and six players in the midfield?
Vamos United!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this club.
Thank you.
Where did all the mini balls go tonight?
Another great game to wonder into the Mezzanine..

Awesome- my 11 year old said the same thing. Her team also won 4-1 today and she said that even the team her team beat could have beaten the Red Bulls.

I thought Tino looked like he was trying too hard at first. He made a few mistakes, but settled into a good half.

Highlight of the game? Seeing Peralta and Wells communicate and work together. Seriously, all the great stuff was great, but that was a huge missing piece of our game, and it's good to see it coming together. In any case, I am thrilled it wasn't just a win, but a pretty one.

Oh and whose garage do you think that Metro Stars flag has been mouldering in? They're going to need a heckuva big clothes line to hang it on when they get it home.

Curious-the Post and other papers often post the AP stories up first because they file real fast. Like right now the Os game story is an AP piece, too. Goff's will be up soon.

Wells was out of position on the goal. He should have been able to bail out bad defending on that one.

Emilio stays, he is scoring goals. Luci is not going ANYWHERE. Get used to it, you Emilio detractors.
